Citizen Science & Open Science: Synergies & Future Areas of Work
Get PDFCitizen Science (CS) and Open Science (OS) are among the most discussed topics in current research and innovation policy, and are becoming increasingly related. This policy brief was developed with contributions from a mixed group of experts from both fields. It aims at informing decision makers who have adopted Citizen Science or Open Science on the synergies between these approaches and the benefits of considering them together. By showcasing initiatives implemented in Europe, this document highlights how Citizen Science and Open Science together can address grand challenges, respond to diminishing societal trust in science, contribute to the creation of common goods and shared resources, and facilitate knowledge transfer between science and society to stimulate innovation. The issues of openness, inclusion and empowerment, education and training, funding, infrastructures and reward systems are discussed regarding critical challenges for both approaches. The document concludes by recommending to consider Citizen Science and Open Science jointly, to strengthen synergies by building on existing initiatives, launching targeted actions regarding education and training, and infrastructures. D5.3 Final Evaluation Report
Get PDFThis deliverable presents the final evaluation of the DITOs events, reviews key data from the project and presents a framework for assessing outreach and public engagement in science activities. It is based on the results of and experiences with DITOs, a 3-year endeavour that realised more than 750 science outreach and engagement activities. Science outreach activities (e.g. exhibitions) are at one end of the spectrum of Citizen Science while interactive workshops are at the other. The DITOs consortium organised a wider range of events than that outlined the project’s proposal, and these were delivered across and beyond Europe. The task of evaluating such a large number and broad range of activities with many actors involved has been an arduous task. This report summarises the approaches taken by the evaluation team, the results, conclusions, and recommendations for future Citizen Science activities

D4.2 Policy Briefs 2
Get PDFThe second batch of DITOs policy briefs focuses on four themes: Brief 1 - Environmental sustainability: This brief follows up the policy brief #1 on BioBlitzes and focuses on the pilot study conducted to develop a common evaluation framework for the City Nature Challenge (CNC) 2018 in Europe. Brief 2 - Biodesign: This brief follows up the policy brief #1 on Do It Yourself Biotechnology (DIYBio). It assesses the potential and challenges of biodesign citizen science for education and how it can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Brief 3 - RRI indicators that reflect the practices of public engagement organisations: This third brief on the overarching topic of RRI is focussed on enriching the conversation and applications of RRI frameworks, in particular how they can move from being used as tools for assessment by funders and evaluators to being useful guidelines for personal and organisational learning and development. The brief presents results from in-depth conversations with facilitators and insights from reviewing RRI indicators in a way that reflects their practices. Brief 4 - RRI - linking Citizen Science and Open Science: This second policy brief on the topic of RRI is focussed on relations between Citizen Science and Open Science. It draws on initiatives implemented in Europe to identify synergies and future areas of work. In response to request from the mid-term project review for more evidence on inclusion impacts of the project, we have decided to diversify the types of policy briefs we will produce. In addition to ‘classic’ policy briefs aimed at giving an introduction and overview of a given topic (Brief 2 and 4) we now also offer ‘Research Insights’ that are based on gathering more thorough evidence from within the project and providing it to decision-makers (Brief 1 and 3). Like the first batch of briefs, a community-oriented approach was chosen for defining the specific topics of each brief and elaborating the content. Brief 1 has been developed by the ECSA working group on BioBlitzes, Brief 2 in cooperation with the in ECSA working group on Citizen Science for Learning and Education. Brief 3 draws on collaborative evaluation work within the DITOs consortium. Brief 4 was created together with the ECSA working group on Citizen Science and Open Science. The timeline of each policy brief has been adapted to be responsive to schedules of contributors, political dynamics and external demands. Brief 4 was already launched in February 2018. Brief 3 is finished and will be designed and published in the next weeks. Brief 1 and 2 are presented as an advanced draft version. Their final review will be conducted in workshops with the respective working groups and external experts at the International ECSA Conference in Geneva next week. This deliverable concludes the successful second stage of WP4 facilitating policy engagement for RRI. The final batch of policy briefs (M36) will further expand this work on biodesign, environmental sustainability and additional aspects of RRI. Citizen Science & Art/Science Synergies and Future Potential
Get PDFThe arts can effectively respond to diminishing societal trust in science, contribute to the creation of public discourse and understanding of science, facilitate knowledge transfer between science and society, and stimulate innovation. Artistic interaction with science opens new pathways far beyond illustrating science. Artists can enter into a dialogue with researchers and scientists that is either critical or supportive Art has the power to emotionally reach out to citizens and to interest but also engage them in a scientifi c process2. Recently, programmes in the arts, in science, and to a limited extent in technology include actions targeting the interaction of artists with research projects3. This brief was developed with contributions from experts in both fi elds. There are clear synergies between these concepts and the benefi ts of considering them together. This document highlights how art can support citizen science and vice versa. The document concludes by recommending to consider citizen science and the arts jointly, to strengthen synergies by building on existing initiatives, to launch targeted actions regarding education and training, and to launch art-science initiatives. The project will advance the EU Responsible Research and Innovation agenda by moving beyond more traditional approaches into direct engagement that builds upon DIY, grassroots, and frugal innovation initiatives so that in the short and medium term we sustain localised capacity building and in the long term the effects of these grassroots efforts channel into policy action at different levels
Doing It Together Science: D1.1 Outreach Plan for Biodesign
Get PDFThis report presents an initial plan and compilation of public engagement activities in the area of biodesign. It outlines the methodology used to formulate the outreach plan for biodesign, namely consultation of partners and feedback via forms and online conversations. It covers around 50 events from 7 partners. The report outlines good practices, analysis and initial set of guidelines regarding issues and lessons learnt from events organised in phase 1. In phase 2, partners aim to run a hundred events and WP1 will support and promote collaborative practices and public activities. UPD leads WP1 biodesign. During phase 1 of DITOs it became evident that the term biodesign is used to describe a wide range of activities in bioart, DIY science, and synthetic biology. It is a term used within many disciplines hence there are different interpretations and some confusion about how the term is used within various communities. WP1 is undertaking an investigation for a working definition for biodesign.
