Propositionwise judgment aggregation
No full textIn the theory of judgment aggregation, it is known for which agendas of propositions it is possible to aggregate individual judgments into collective ones in accordance with the Arrow-inspired requirements of universal domain, collective rationality, unanimity preservation, non-dictatorship and propositionwise independence. But it is only partially known for which agendas it is possible to respect additional requirements, notably non-oligarchy, anonymity, no individual veto power, or implication preservation. We fully characterize the agendas for which there are such possibilities, thereby answering the most salient open questions about propositionwise judgment aggregation. Our results build on earlier results by Nehring and Puppe (2002), Nehring (2006) and Dietrich and List (2007a).mathematical economics;

Diagnosis. Crown with pair of large brown or black preapical spots; forewing lacking distinct spots or oblique patterns, inner apical cell with base oblique. Male pygofer with dorsal appendage well development, one or more macrosetae present basad of dorsal appendage, ventral appendage present. Style apex truncate, footlike, with only two points, preapical lobe well developed. Connective U or Y-shaped. Aedeagus with dorsal apodeme well developed, usually T-shaped in posterior view, shaft often with paired or unpaired basal or distal process, or both; unpaired basal process, when present, closely appressed to shaft. Biology. Species of the genus feed on shrubs, grasses or herbaceous vegetation. Distribution. Crown weakly to moderately produced medially, with pair of large brown or black preapical spots; mesonotum with basal triangles usually dark brown, contrasting with remainder of sclerite; forewing lacking distinct spots or oblique patterns, inner apical cell with base oblique; male pygofer with dorsal appendage well developed (except N. obsoleta, n. sp.), immovably fused to pygofer margin; one or more macrosetae present basad of dorsal appendage; ventral appendage present, usually elongate. Style apex truncate, footlike, with only two points, preapical lobe well developed. Connective U-shaped, without median anterior lobe, arms short. Aedeagus with dorsal apodeme well developed, usually T-shaped in posterior view, without sclerotized connection to dorsal pygofer appendage or anal tube; shaft often with paired or unpaired basal or distal processes, or both; unpaired basal process, when present, closely appressed to shaft. Distribution. Western United States south to Argentina. Notes. Phylogenetic analysis of morphological data recovered Neozygina as the monophyletic sister group to a clade comprising the New World genera Mexigina, Hepzygina, and Zyginama (Dietrich & Dmitriev 2006). The genus previously included 10 described species, 1 of which is here treated as a junior synonym. An additional 16 species discovered during this study are described below. Terrorism Prevention: A General Model
No full textIn this paper, I present and discuss a method for modelling an important trade-off faced by terrorism prevention policies: the trade-off between, on the one hand, trying to reduce people's inclination towards terrorism, and, on the other hand, trying to protect society against existing terrorists. In general, cause-related policies reduce inclination towards terrorism (first goal), involving measures such as raising the standard of living, and symptom-related policies reduce the power of terrorists (second goal), involving measures such as capturing and detaining terrorists. But, crucially, symptom-related policies also affect the inclination towards terrorism, through (desirable) deterrence and (undesirable) 'hate effects'. If 'hate effects' dominate over deterrence, more toughness overall increases inclination, possibly overcompensating the 'capture success'. So, symptom-related policies may face a trade-off between capturing terrorists, and thereby possibly creating new terrorists.
