An Investigation on Electricity Business Perspectives in Southern Italy Area
The Italian electricity market organization is based on a
compulsory power pool structure where all electricity buying and
selling activities are under the market operators’ control. The Market
Clearing Price is determined by the intersection of cumulative saleand
purchase- curves. Many crucial aspects may influence the
energy price giving rise to market inefficiencies. A typical market
inefficiency is the congestion.
The paper deals with a simulation tool able to investigate the
wholesale energy market when network congestion arises. In this
case, the market splitting process into two or more zones is required
when the interface flow between neighboring zones exceeds the prefixed
transfer limits. The proposed approach is applied to the entire
Italian energy market focusing the analysis on the Southern Italy
business perspectives.
Test results show the effects on the energy price and profits of
plant-outage, network configuration changes and of the increasing
presence of combined power plants
Wind farm stability analysis in the presence of variable-speed generators
Variable-speed technologies have been adopted to improve the efficiency of electricity generation in wind farms. Among these technologies, doubly-fed induction generators have widely spread and their stability issues have been experienced and analysed. In recent years, permanent-magnet synchronous generators have been also exploited, connected to the grid through full-scale converters, ensuring high flexibility, reducing losses and weight. The presence of these technologies heightens the necessity of deeply investigating wind turbine behaviour under different disturbances.
In this paper, a small- and large-disturbance stability analysis is carried out in order to compare dynamic characteristic of wind farm equipped with the aforementioned generation technologies. To this purpose, a detailed model of wind turbine, together with relevant control schemes, is adopted for each generator of a real-sized wind farm. The compliance of the plant with fault-ride-through requirements imposed by transmission system operator is also verified
Attaining Grid Code Reactive Power Capabilities for Photovoltaic Power Plant
The increasing diffusion of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems, to be directly connected to high-voltage transmission networks, arises the need of dealing with specific technical requirements posed in grid codes by Transmission System Operator (TSO) for a feasible connection. Among them, the compliance with specific reactive power capabilities at point of common coupling (PCC), depending on active power production levels and on grid voltage values at PCC, can have significant implications in the design stage of a PV generator. In fact, the chosen size and the installation features of the DC/AC converters affect their ability of providing leading/lagging reactive power levels. Moreover, the presence of on load tap changers on the transformers could be beneficial for the PV system operation. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology for evaluating the main factors which affect the reactive power capabilities of a PV system to be compliant with the transmission grid code requirements
Deregulated market of energy and environmental risks: a chance or a threat?
Deregulation of the utility business causes the increase of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) entitled to open access to the grid and permits the customers to freely choose their suppliers. While retail competition is expected to exert pressures to reduce costs, new products and value-added services will also proliferate. Growing evidence, for example, suggests that some customers will be willing to pay a premium for environmentally preferable, or green, electricity products.
The aim of this paper is to propose an environmental performance indicator provided during energy market transactions with MWh cost of the generation. This indicator reports the environmental impact relative to energy production evaluated through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and referred to a functional unit of generated energy
