International social work is a field of professional practice that is widespread in various countries around the world, yet still little explored in the literature and little known as a specific field of action. Exploring its definition and its possible applications in practice, starting from the analysis of a social work case study within an international project, aims to encourage the consolidation of a flexible, inclusive and plural thinking and method, necessary both for social workers working abroad, or in international exchange projects, and for those working with foreign users, offering the opportunity to broaden horizons and at the same time to strengthen the roots of the profession

“Without social there is no health”: Social work perspectives in multidisciplinary healthcare

The pandemic has not just affected the health sphere: strong social effects of the emergency have added to the health risk, stressing on social relations and the deterioration of people’s living conditions, and making those who are already fragile more fragile. Notwithstanding, during the emergency following the COVID-19 pandemic the attention was focused, indeed understandably, on the health aspects, widening the already existing misalignment between the health interventions and the social ones. Emergency oriented efforts and resources more toward a clinical care approach (cure) than toward support for the social and the inclusion aspects (care). Reflecting on the specific area of health care that interacts with social care (and vice versa), shows how the medicalization in managing the emergency have undermined or, at least, weakened the global approach to the person and to vulnerability profiles that should inspire the socio-healthcare integration. The aim of this review is describing the relationship between the health and social systems and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on it: a review of studies on the role played by social work in the health sector before and during COVID-19 pandemic emergency shows how much potential there is still to be developed for social work in the health sector that acts together with the personal health services; a care that looks at the person within his or her relationships, community resources and environmental aspects requires an investment toward integration between hospital care, social services and local communities

The internationalization of social problems has sanctioned the breaking of the rigid national borders within which, traditionally, the helping professions moved and, among these, the social service. Being constitutively a profession linked to the satisfaction of the social needs of the population and to the promotion of social change has, in fact, led to the activation and development of methodological and operational paths for the social service in response to the social change taking place in the international relations and national and international cooperation policies between the countries of the North and those of the South of the world

The term "integration" in the field of migration studies has a plurality of meanings, which derives both from the multiplicity of objective and subjective variables that contribute to its definition, and from its interconnection with the political and cultural changes constantly underway (participation [3], legal inclusion, civil and political intervention, citizenship, social policies, democratic coexistence, social rights, etc.)

The current landscape of Social Work has certainly changed since the 1980s: the profession enjoys general recognition, an established professional status and a university career that goes as far as a doctorate. The question raised by the profession no longer refers to the search for theoretical models of reference: the current challenges refer to the professional identity of the social worker in a postmodern social and labor context (Folgheriter, 2004) and to the climate of deprivation due to the redefinition of Well-being. In addition, social workers have to reckon with the transformations of social services and the drastic cutback in planning and innovation, due to the reduction in public spending in the social sector (Fazzi, 2010). Above all, as professionals hired in an ever more flexible way, they also experience the negative effects of the precariousness and monetization of social services, despite the fact that, however, they constitute the first point of contact with a public. co increasingly in need of assistance. The liberalization of public goods and the managerial implementation of services, the erosion of universal rights and contractual arrangements of social policy are some of the ongoing transformations involving Italian Welfare. The change is not limited to the alteration of working conditions, to which the services have to adapt; but, above all, it is necessary to examine the fundamental principles that once constituted Well-being, and that are now increasingly uncertain (Nothdufter, 2011). The service system is constantly evolving, especially in recent years, in which events such as earthquakes, pandemics and wars have added to the spread of new forms of poverty and new social and health vulnerabilities, to which Social Work Italian has started to respond and is developing updated roles and functions.

International Social Work: Professional Debates about Global and Local Practices

International social work is still a work in progress and an arena with diverse definitions, interpretations, and directions. The international application of social work requires taking a multi-faceted view of the nature of social work and has implications for the international debate on values and ethics; the profession's firm commitment to the principles of human rights and social justice raises many questions about how these values may be perceived differently in relation to cultural and national contexts. The increasing mobility of social workers across national borders, as well as posing challenges in terms of cultural adaptation and sometimes language competences, offers important opportunities to recognize the skills and the experiences which workers from other countries bring; and, at a more general level, increased opportunities for gaining an international perspective on the development of social work and social services

Relational Challenges for Social Workers with Unaccompanied Migrant Minors

    No full text
The chapter addresses the issue of social work for UAMs as a specific area of social work that deals with providing support and protection to minors who are in a country other than their own, ensuring that they receive the support they need to overcome difficulties and reach their full potential, providing them with a safe and secure environment in which to grow and develop. The aim of the interventions is to provide UAMs with resources, support and access to the opportunities available in the host country so that they can become active and participating citizens. For truly inclusive reception pathways, it is fundamental—in addition to the availability of resources and interventions—also and above all the relational context in which the interventions are implemented; it is the relational quality of the help and support pathways that significantly contributes to the resilience of minors and young people

La sepsi- IVIG e antibiotici: efficace integrazione terapeutica

    No full text

    No full text
The pandemic has been an event capable of radicalising trends that were already underway: growth in inequalities, crisis in central and local administrations, crisis in public regulation and essential public services (health, education, training and work), increase in areas of social vulnerability. Recent studies and research clearly confirm the link between social vulnerability, inequalities, exclusion and Covid-19 in the experience of non-Italian citizens, as well as the close connection between exposure to a high risk of contagion and conditions of poverty and social margin- ality, defined as stratification of precariousness linked to the migrant experience. Nevertheless, this specific social vulnerability has not been included in the Pnrr among the individual and collective risk factors on which to intervene to prevent social exclusion, while on the contrary it deserves an investment in national cohe- sion and inclusion plans, since the integration and inclusion of foreigners in Italy is a fundamental building block towards social cohesion in the whole community

Empowering Migrant Inclusion. Professional Skills and Tools

    No full text
In recent years, there has been a growing interest and attention towards unaccompanied migrant minors due to the increase in the number of arrivals in Italy as well as in many other European Countries. The overriding interests of the child and the vulnerable conditions of the minor have led to the need to address, as a priority, an issue that has become a significant human and social question at international level. The quality of the system is also given by the quality of the profes- sionals involved. Education, training and supervision of professionals—together with an effective collaboration with other adults such as guardians, who can constitute appropriate reference figures for minors and at the same time be a bridge between the system and the local community—are then the essential way to be able to offer minors paths that are increasingly tailored to their needs and constantly flexible in grasping their changes and relaunching their life projects towards the future
