    User-centred design and literacy tools for the deaf

    The need of literacy intervention and of tools for deaf people is largely documented in the literature of deaf studies. This paper aims at eliciting the interests of HCI researchers and practitioners alike on the creation of more intelligent web tools for the literacy of deaf people. Our paper overviews several e-tools for the literacy of the deaf, and it assesses them according to the user centred design methodology. It concludes with a proposal, namely, a first set of guidelines for designing usable e-tools for deaf people, and calls for a debate on the need of a deaf user centred design. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg

    The 1st release of the Terence learner GUI: The user-based usability evaluation

    This paper reports the user-based usability evaluations performed in Italy of the first release of the learner Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the TERENCE project. This project aims at developing an adaptive learning system for training the reasoning about stories' events of the TERENCE learners in Italy and in UK. Learners are 7-11 year old children, hearing and deaf, that have difficulties in correlating the events of a story, making inferences about them, and detecting inconsistencies. The evaluation of the first release of the TERENCE adaptive learning system software prototypes tackles their usability in order to quickly reveal possible usability problems, as well as to address the TERENCE team to solve them, before the large scale evaluation. Moreover, authors try to carried out important general issues related to the experiment performance. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013

    An ontology for a web dictionary of italian sign language

    Sign languages are visual languages used in deaf communities. They are essentially tempo-spatial languages: signs are made of manual components, e.g., the hand movements, and non-manual components, e.g., facial expressions. The e-LIS project aims at the creation of the first web bidirectional dictionary for Italian sign language-verbal Italian. Whereas the lexicographic order is a standard and 'natural' way of ordering hence retrieving words in Italian dictionaries, there is nothing similar for Italian sign language dictionaries. Stokoe-based notations have been successfully employed for decomposing and ordering signs in paper dictionaries for Italian sign language; but consulting the dictionaries requires knowing the adopted Stokoe-based notation, which is not as easy-to-remember and well-known as Italian alphabet is. Users of a web dictionary cannot be expected to be expert of this. There the role of ontologies comes into play. The ontology presented in this paper analyses and relates the formational components of a sign; in some sense, the ontology allows us to 'enrich' the e-LIS dictionary with expert information concerning classes of sign components and, above all, their mutual relations. We conclude this paper with several open questions at the intersection of knowledge representation and reasoning, semantic web, sign and computational linguistics

    New Design Techniques for New Users: An Action Research-Based Approach

    Novel ICT products based on the idea of phenomenologically situated interaction, along with the demands of their new users, raise the necessity of relying on new design and evaluation methods. Action Research, based on juxtaposition of action and research, is committed to the production of new knowledge through the seeking of solutions and/or improvements to “real-life” practical problem situations, and appears to well cope with these new demands: unlike laboratory experiments, struggling to maintain relevance to the real world, the “laboratory” of Action Research is the real world itself. In this paper we report on our experience within an Action Research project aimed at conceiving a novel children-oriented data gathering technique and using it for the context-of-use analysis of the TERENCE project, which developed a Technology Enhanced Learning system for children. Not only did our experience provide solutions for the problem at hand, but it was also the opportunity for a reflection on Action Research itself in the case in which the objective of the research is the definition of a new method for solving the problem
