    On the application of the single-phase level set method to naval hydrodynamic flows

    The application of the single-phase level set approach to the numerical simulations of three-dimensional free surface flows around complex geometries, at both non-breaking and breaking regimes is presented. In this approach only the liquid phase is simulated and the level set function is used as tracking device to locate the free surface position. The extrapolation of the solution in the dummy points in the gaseous phase is such that second-order accuracy is maintained also in the points adjacent to the free surface; the time evolution of the level set function and the re-initialization step have been merged so to get a function which is a distance function everywhere, and satisfies, at the same time, the kinematic condition on the free surface. The implementation of this technique into a general purpose Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations solver developed at INSEAN [Di Mascio A, Broglia R, Favini B. A Second Order Godunov-type Scheme for Naval Hydrodynamics. Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers; 2001, p. 253-61], is described in details; capabilities of the algorithm in dealing with non-breaking and breaking flows in the naval hydrodynamic context will be demonstrated by using a submerged hydrofoil and two different ship hulls in straight course as test cases. Comparisons with both experimental data and numerical surface fitting computations are presented; convergence properties of the algorithm, as well as validation and verification assessment will be also discussed. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd.     The Draghi Government put to the Test by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan

    The political and institutional trajectory of Italy was clearly punctu- ated by the economic upheavals of the pandemic. The articles in the special issue aim to assess the character of the institutional change prompted by the economic response to the pandemic, and in particular by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), in different policy areas. Three contributions analyse the reform dynamics related to the strategic axis of the Italian NRRP, namely digitalization and innovation (Ottone and Barbieri), the ecological transition (Cotta and Domorenok), and social inclusion as concerns labour-market policies (Tassinari). Two contributions focus on two overarching priorities of the NRRP: gender equality (Donà) and development of southern Italy (Cerruto, Cersosimo and Raniolo). Finally, one contribution focuses on reform of the public adminis- tration, which has been identified as a key area, affecting horizon- tally all missions in the NRRP (Di Mascio, Natalini and Profeti). Overall, the articles in the special issue highlight that the pandemic has been followed by a process of institutional change that occurred both incrementally and unevenly, often disguising sub- stantial continuity

    Smoothed particle hydrodynamics method from a large eddy simulation perspective. Generalization to a quasi-Lagrangian model

    The present work deals with some recent developments regarding the inclusion of the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) in the weakly compressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) framework. Previously {see the work of Di Mascio et al. [Phys. Fluids 29, 4 (2017)]}, this goal was achieved by applying a Lagrangian filter to the Navier–Stokes equations for compressible fluids and, then, approximating the differential operators in a SPH fashion. Since the Lagrangian nature of the derived scheme turned out to be an obstacle for accurate simulations of high Reynolds number problems, the above approach is here modified to obtain a quasi-Lagrangian LES-SPH model. This relies on the addition of a small velocity deviation to the actual Lagrangian velocity based on the particle shifting technique and on the inclusion of the tensile instability control technique for eliminating the onset of the tensile instability in the fluid regions characterized by large vorticity and negative pressure. The proposed model is successfully tested in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional frameworks by simulating the evolution of freely decaying turbulence problems and comparing the outputs with the available theoretical results and solutions from other numerical models

    The 1st release of the Terence learner GUI: The user-based usability evaluation

    This paper reports the user-based usability evaluations performed in Italy of the first release of the learner Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the TERENCE project. This project aims at developing an adaptive learning system for training the reasoning about stories' events of the TERENCE learners in Italy and in UK. Learners are 7-11 year old children, hearing and deaf, that have difficulties in correlating the events of a story, making inferences about them, and detecting inconsistencies. The evaluation of the first release of the TERENCE adaptive learning system software prototypes tackles their usability in order to quickly reveal possible usability problems, as well as to address the TERENCE team to solve them, before the large scale evaluation. Moreover, authors try to carried out important general issues related to the experiment performance. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013
