Afropean Journeys: A Conversation with E.C. Osondu
Nigeria-born and US resident author E.C. Osondu debuted with the short story collection Voice of America (2010), followed by the novel This House is Not for Sale (2015) and Alien Stories (2020). His latest novel, When the Sky is Ready the Stars Will Appear, the compelling tale of an African boy’s journey towards Rome in search of a better life, was first published in translation in Italy with the title Quando il cielo vuole spuntano le stelle (2020). Only one year later, the original version of the novel was published in Nigeria. This piece, based on a conversation with the author within the context of the “Afropean Bridges” 2021 Series, introduces E.C. Osondu and his works to the Italian audience

The chapter linguistically and culturally frames the writing of the celebrated Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, whose works the author has translated into Italian. Examining Soyinka’s production in the context of Nigerian English-language literature, she reflects on how translating is a linguistic as much as a cultural process. Focusing on the Nobel Laureate’s post-exile literary production, the essay highlights the context and the techniques used in the translation of his mature poem, A Humanist Ode for Chibok, Leah (2019), which addresses pressing contemporary social and political themes through a poetic form inspired by ancient models

"Man Jack the man is": an Analysis of Gerald Manley Hopkins' sonnet The Sheperd's Brow
Although the sonnet The Shepherd’s Brow, written by G. M. Hopkins only a few months before his death, has been considered by Robert Bridges an unfinished work, critics have gradually tended to agree that it is one of the poet’s most refined and powerful poems, structurally and thematically. W. H. Gardner has read in it a “Swiftean cynicism”, while other more recent scholars have defined it “conflicted” (Mariani), “ironic and damned” (Feeney), and above all “cryptic” (Sobolev). Often studied as an ideal appendix to the so called “terrible sonnets”, by offering a close-reading of the sonnet this article argues that The Shepherd’s Brow is one of Hopkins’ most powerful poems, marking an important final turn in his poetic production

Translation into Italian of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka's 2021 novel Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth. Soyinka's Chronicles - published 48 years after his latest novel, The Interpreters - offers a fictional fresco of contemporary Nigeria, a country ridden by political and moral corruption. During the latest political campaigns, Dr. Menka finds out that some colleagues at the hospital where he works sell body parts for ritualistic reasons. Afflicted by such an unexpected discovery, he shares the news with his oldest college friend, bon viveur, star engineer, and Yoruba royal Duyole Pitan-Payne, who is about to leave the country to assume a prestigious post at the United Nations in New York. Neither Dr. Menka nor Duyole know how close the enemy is, and how powerful. Their friendship survives death and betrayal, but the country remains metaphorically dismembered. In the sophisticated, unique language that marks his entire literary, political, poetic, and dramatic production, Soyinka, a literary giant and a fierce political activist, offers a stirring call to arms against the abuse of power. The translator, a scholar specialized in Nigerian literature, renders in Italian a complex text by the dean of African literature, demonstrating how translation is a linguistic as well as a cultural practice

La letteratura nigeriana in lingua inglese
La tradizione letteraria nigeriana, appropriatasi della lingua del colonizzatore, travalica i confini nazionali, nonché quelli dei cosiddetti studi postcoloniali, percorrendo temi che vanno dalla cosmogonia mitologica all’impatto coloniale, dall’indipendenza alle migrazioni contemporanee. Nonostante sia ampiamente tradotta, in Italia questa produzione letteraria, che pure si è affermata come una delle più ricche del mondo delle lettere in lingua inglese, non è mai stata sistematizzata all’interno di uno studio specifico che ne sottolinei l’aspetto nazionale insieme a quello transnazionale. Questo volume si propone di colmare questo vuoto, contestualizzandola storicamente e culturalmente, spiegandone la complessità, la diversità e l’importanza nel mondo delle lettere internazionali. A questo fine, si approfondiscono temi e correnti, presentando gli autori di maggiore spicco, ormai assurti a classici: Amos Tutuola, considerato il padre della letteratura africana in lingua inglese, la cui opera marca il passaggio dalla tradizione orale alla scrittura letteraria; Chinua Achebe, autore di opere celebri tra cui Il crollo (Things Fall Apart, 1958), il romanzo africano più letto nei curricula scolastici e universitari di tutto il mondo; e Wole Soyinka, scrittore eclettico e intellettuale imprescindibile non solo nel panorama africano, premio Nobel per la letteratura nel 1986
