Education and Italian Regional Development
In this paper, we study the connection between growth and human capital in a convergence regression for the panel of
Italian regions. We include measures of average primary, secondary and tertiary education. We find that increased
education seems to contribute to growth only in the South. Decomposing total schooling into its three constituent parts,
we find that only primary education in the South seems to be important, while tertiary education seems to have a negative
impact on regional growth. Our main results are robust to the inclusion of additional variables in the regression analysis
and the use of an IV estimator. Overall, this study suggests that Italian growth benefited from the elimination of illiteracy
in the South, mainly in the 60s. It also suggests a possible relationship between the level of development of an economy and
returns to different levels of education, with Italian regions still far from being able to capture the positive returns from
higher levels of education
Convergence and divergence in neoclassical growth models with human capital
This paper offers a selective survey of the more recent contributions on the theoretical and empirical analysis of human capital and growth. Our aim is to provide the necessary link between the theory on growth and human capital and the existing empirical applications. An overview of this literature shows that from the very beginning of the resurgence of interest in growth theory, models have focused on the role of human capital in explaining exogenous or endogenous growth mechanisms and convergence/divergence hypothesis. Conversely, the recent debate has increasingly focused on identifying the specific channels through which human capital may directly or indirectly influence growth. Despite the plethora of studies on this field, a consensus on the importance of human capital on growth processes has yet to be reached and the debate is still intense
Length of Stay in the Host Country and Educational Achievement of Immigrant Students: The Italian Case
Using Italian data on language standardized tests for three different levels of schooling we investigate if the observed gap in educational attainments in 1st generation immigrants tends to lower the longer they stay in Italy, and if younger children tend to catch up faster than their older schoolmates. The analysis shows that the significant gap in language skills observed between 1st and 2nd generation immigrant students is mainly due to both the negative performance of immigrant children newly arrived in Italy, and the immigrant students' area of origin. Comparing the results across the different grades, we also find that this gap narrows at a different pace in the early or later years of an immigrant student's life. Overall, our results suggest the presence of a 'critical' age above which 1st generation immigrant students face a negative impact on their school performance, and that institutional and cultural factors play a role on immigrant language skills acquisition
