The Unconscious, consciousness, and the Self illusion

    No full text
In this article we explore the relationship between consciousness and the unconscious as it has taken shape within contemporary cognitive science - meaning by this term the mature cognitive science, which has fully incorporated the results of the neurosciences. In this framework we first compare the neurocognitive unconscious with the Freudian one, emphasizing the similarities and above all the differences between the two constructs. We then turn our attention to the implications of the centrality of unconscious processes in cognitive science for the classical conception of the self. Our analysis will bring to light a bit of claustrophobic dialectic between an eliminative variety of naturalism and an anti-naturalistic form of hermeneutics. Hence we conclude by recommending the pursuit of a mediation between such extreme stances

    L'inconscio nella dialettica personale/subpersonale

In our contribution we deal with the relationship between consciousness and the unconscious as it has taken shape within contemporary cognitive sciences, with a focus on the problem of the relationship between the personal and subpersonal levels of analysis of the mind. We begin by comparing the cognitive unconscious with the Freudian one, rejecting the project of converting psychoanalysis into an anti-naturalistic form of hermeneutics. Then we turn our attention to the so-called problem of «the mark of cognitive», emphasizing the difficulties that it raises for the eliminative project of developing a subpersonal model of the mind totally disengaged from personal-level psychology. We conclude with a plea for a more dialectical relationship between personal and subpersonal levels of analysis

How to handle negative interest rates in a CIR framework

In this paper, we propose a new model to address the problem of negative interest rates that preserves the analytical tractability of the original Cox–Ingersoll–Ross (CIR) model without introducing a shift to the market interest rates, because it is defined as the difference of two independent CIR processes. The strength of our model lies within the fact that it is very simple and can be calibrated to the market zero yield curve using an analytical formula. We run several numerical experiments at two different dates, once with a partially sub-zero interest rate and once with a fully negative interest rate. In both cases, we obtain good results in the sense that the model reproduces the market term structures very well. We then simulate the model using the Euler–Maruyama scheme and examine the mean, variance and distribution of the model. The latter agrees with the skewness and fat tail seen in the original CIR model. In addition, we compare the model’s zero coupon prices with market prices at different future points in time. Finally, we test the market consistency of the model by evaluating swaptions with different tenors and maturities

Convergence of the follow-the-leader scheme for scalar conservation laws with space dependent flux

This paper deals with the derivation of entropy solutions to Cauchy problems for a class of scalar conservation laws with space-density depending fluxes from systems of deterministic particles of follow-the-leader type. We consider fluxes which are product of a function of the density v(rho) and a function of the space variable phi(x). We cover four distinct cases in terms of the sign of phi, including cases in which the latter is not constant. The convergence result relies on a local maximum principle and on a uniform BV estimate for the approximating density

La scienza cognitiva e il rapporto coscienza-inconscio

    No full text

On the Deterministic-Shift Extended CIR Model in a Negative Interest Rate Framework

In this paper, we propose a new exogenous model to address the problem of negative interest rates that preserves the analytical tractability of the original Cox–Ingersoll–Ross (CIR) model with a perfect fit to the observed term-structure. We use the difference between two independent CIR processes and apply the deterministic-shift extension technique. To allow for a fast calibration to the market swaption surface, we apply the Gram–Charlier expansion to calculate the swaption prices in our model. We run several numerical tests to demonstrate the strengths of this model by using Monte-Carlo techniques. In particular, the model produces close Bermudan swaption prices compared to Bloomberg’s Hull–White one-factor model. Moreover, it finds constant maturity swap (CMS) rates very close to Bloomberg’s CMS rates
