This article aims at discussing the issue of the football Super League as it emerged in the proposal of the 12 «rebels» clubs in April 2021. The idea of a European League managed by the most powerful clubs out of the UEFA shield is not a novelty in the history. The reaction of media, politicians, and fans has been so harsh against the project inducing the clubs, firstly the English teams, to give it up, with the exemption of Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid even menaced by UEFA to be fined or excluded from the European competitions in the next season. Our paper contributes to the debate on Super League by discussing key elements that recently, in our opinion, may have forced the proposers to overturn the European football organization. We examine the economic and financial situation of the 12 clubs adhering to the Super League by scrutinizing the financial reports to test the hypothesis if the abovementioned project may be considered as the final fling prior their bankruptcy, or a natural step towards the process of «americanization» of European football. The financial situation has been also explored considering the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis that increased the financial instability of the football system. In our opinion the Super League projects has not been determined firstly by the risk of solvency of the 12 clubs, but as in the past, by the willingness to exclude the international organization (UEFA) from the control of the increasing earnings generated by the football events. In addition, by organizing a «semi-closed» competition, the clubs aim at reducing the financial risky associated to worst sporting performances. The collapse of the projects revealed its fragility since a new design of international competition may not be considered the solution of the wide problems faced by football nowadays. A more comprehensive perspective needs to be adopted to solve the difficulties of clubs in terms of wages bubbles, revenues polarization, results crystallization, and calendar saturation

Ask me if I am happy: sport practice and life satisfaction in Italy

This paper investigates the influence of physical activity on well-being. We use data from the Aspects of Daily Life survey provided by the Italian National Institute of Statistics, for the period 2013–2019. To capture the effect of sport participation on life satisfaction we face the problem of endogeneity. We solve this issue from a methodological point of view by using an instrumental variable (IV) ordered probit model, where the instrument has been identified in living nearby to an equipped green area. Our investigation suggests that physical activity is positively and strongly associated with life satisfaction, showing that the probability of being very happy is very high (70%) among individuals practicing sport regularly. For this reason, policies targeted at promoting and supporting sport practice play a key role in determining the subjective well-being of citizens. Our results also indicate a significant association between life satisfaction and gender, and between life satisfaction and inability to work, revealing the need to foster inclusive policies to reduce differences in well-being among groups of population

This article aims at analysing the role of Swarm Intelligence or the so-called Wisdom of Crowds in determining the players’ transfer market value in the Italian Serie A. We use information provided by the web site Transfermarkt and collect data on 1,620 players of Italian Serie A, from season 2007/08 to 2016/2017, creating a panel of 4,486 observations. Using traditional variables on players characteristics like age, both linear and squared, games played and goals in the season under investigation, and wages provided by La Gazzetta dello Sport, we estimate a Fixed Effects model both on the aggregate sample of players and differentiating by their position on the field. We find that all variables are statistically significant and the relationships with the players’ market values provided by Transfermarkt are consistent with those previously obtained by the sport economic literature. Moreover, introducing fixed effects associated both to teams and seasons, we establish the value of the transfer market added by each single team in the evaluation of the Transfermarkt experts, so ranking the clubs. In addition, we show that taking the 2007/08 as the reference season, the players’ transfer market value has been reducing dramatically over the last years in the opinion of Transfermarkt experts, so menacing the financial stability of Italian clubs exceedingly oriented to capital gains coming from players transfers, instead of exploiting traditional source of revenues like game tickets, merchandising, TV rights, sponsorships, and stadiums

In this paper, we examine the asset sales behaviours and rationales found in a particular sub-domain of the sport sector, i.e. football. More specifically, we study the kinds of institutional logics (a demand for excellence in sports or a demand for financial success or stability) football clubs aim to accomplish when they sell their main assets, i.e. their players

An inquiry into the structure and dynamics of crude oil price using the fast iterative filtering algorithm

The identification of the temporal scales related to market activities is crucial for understanding the dynamics of international crude oil prices. Standard analysis techniques fail in producing consistently good results due to the non-linear behaviour of the oil market. In this paper we propose an innovative approach based on the concurring application of a new non-linear data analysis method, Fast Iterative Filtering (FIF), and a multi-scale statistical analysis (Standardized Mean Test). This approach proves to be able to separate automatically crude oil price data into three components: a long term trend, an intermediate or middle period behaviour, and a transitory or short-run behaviour. The economic meaning of each component is clearly identified as: high frequency variations, caused by normal supply-demand disequilibrium; medium term fluctuations, driven by geopolitical, financial, and technological shocks; a low frequency trend reflecting the global business cycle. All these results make the proposed approach a more performing tool for analysing oil price data structure and dynamics. Such a method, if coupled with different prediction techniques (e.g., ARIMA, ARCH, etc., or ANN, SVM, etc.), can potentially show higher performance than existing hybrid models in forecasting crude oil prices
