Cooperative sensor networks for voltage quality monitoring in smart grids

    No full text
The paper intends to give a contribution toward the definition of a fully decentralized voltage quality monitoring architecture by proposing the employment of self organizing sensor networks. According to this paradigm each node can assess both the performances of the monitored site, computed by acquiring local information, and the global performances of the monitored grid section, computed by local exchanges of information with its neighbors nodes. Thanks to this feature each node could automatically detect local voltage quality anomalies. Moreover system operator can assess the system voltage quality index for each grid section by inquiring any node of the corresponding sensors network without the need of a central fusion center acquiring and processing all the node acquisitions. This makes the overall monitoring architecture highly scalable, self-organizing and distributed

A Simulation Study on Differential GNSS-R Land Altimetry from Space

    No full text
Phase altimetry has been recently introduced for high precision measurements in satellite bistatic global navigation satel-lite system refiectometry in the presence of coherent scattering. This work introduces differential altimetry concept via a simulation study. The phase difference between two contigu-ous specular points paths is exploited to reduce atmospheric effects and systematic errors occurring over closely spaced paths. The work also introduces an oversampling technique to mitigate unwrapping errors

Sudden onset of thoracic pain: neurofibroma with intracystic haemorrhage

Intercostal nerve sheath tumors are normally benign and asymptomatic. Nevertheless surgical resection can eliminate the risk of malignant transformation and also achieve complete remission in case of symptoms. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Pedunculated pulmonary leiomyoma with large cyst formation

    No full text
A case of single pulmonary leiomyoma with giant cyst formation is presented. Metastasizing uterine fibroleiomyoma and fibroleiomyomatous hamartoma both give rise to multiple pulmonary nodules on chest films. Leiomyoma of the lung presenting as a single pedunculated lesion with cyst formation is exceptional. This report documents the existence of other rare cystic lesions that may mimic the more common cystic air space and bullous disease

Sardegna, salute e strutture: studio dei flussi dei pazienti nella Regione Sardegna mediante la teoria delle reti complesse [Use of the complex network theory to study inpatient flow between health facilities in Sardinia (Italy)]

Analysing the organizational structure and functioning of health systems is fundamental for improving healthcare services and for using available resources efficiently. In this study, data regarding the flow of hospital inpatients to and from the various healthcare facilities in the Sardinia Region (Italy) were analysed, by using techniques borrowed from the theory of complex networks. First data regarding the total number of patients were analysed, then data were analysed according to clinical specialty and finally a more detailed analysis was performed for the clinical specialties of general surgery, haematology, cardiology and ophthalmology. Factors that were found to influence patient transfers between hospitals in the healthcare network in Sardinia (Italy) are the type of route, including the distance to cover, and the type of specialty clinics present in the various facilities

Postoperative pain relief after surgical removal of impacted third molars: a single-blind, randomized, controlled study to compare levobupivacaine and mepivacaine.

AIM: To compare the efficacy of 0.75% levobupivacaine with that of 3% mepivacaine for pain control after surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. METHODS: Forty-two subjects (23 females and 19 males, mean age 23.5 +/- 4) underwent surgical removal of third molars in two separate sessions. Within each patient, levobupivacaine was used to anesthetize one extraction side and for the other side, mepivacaine. Onset of anesthesia, duration of surgery, lip numbness, timing of pain appearance and analgesic consumption were evaluated. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in onset of anesthesia, duration of surgical procedure, and lower lip numbness between the two groups (P > .05). Timing of pain appearance and of first drug consumption was significantly lower in the mepivacaine group (P < .05). Patients with levobupivacaine anesthesia had significantly lower visual analog (VAS) pain scores at 1 and 2 hours postoperatively than those with mepivacaine anesthesia. CONCLUSION: Levobupivacaine is a valid alternative to traditional local anesthetics for surgical removal of lower third molars. It presents better pain relief when compared to mepivacaine in the immediate postoperative period as evidenced by lower VAS scores
