Quality management in the industry 4.0 era
In the current competitive scenario, manufacturing companies are facing various challenges related to an increasing level of variability. This variability means different sets of dimensions such as demand, volume, process, technology, quality, customer behavior and supplier attitude, and transform the industrial systems engineering domain. A new paradigm tries to solve these challenges and solutions such as "the fourth industrial revolution" or "Industry 4.0" refers to new production patterns, including new technologies, productive factors and labor organizations, which are completely changing the production processes and developing high-efficiency production systems that make it possible to minimize production costs and improve production and product quality. Manufacturing companies need to achieve a substantial improvement in performance by manufacturing high-quality products and creating highly flexible systems that make it possible to maintain their efficiency even when demand varies dramatically. Tools for the management and optimization of quality are vitally important. In this way the adoption of highly flexible cyber physical production units permits the implementation of production processes capable of guaranteeing high-quality standards in the finished product, even in the case of small production lots. Industry 4.0 provides promising opportunities for quality management therefore, the purpose of this paper is to focus on the quality management and industry 4.0 concepts and analyze the current state of literature trying to understand the implications and opportunities for quality management in the industry 4.0 era
Does Environmental, Social and Governance performance influence intellectual capital disclosure tone in Integrated Reporting?
Throw Money at ICD? The Effect of the Global Financial Crisis on the Link Between Intellectual Capital Disclosure and (Non-)audit Fees
This paper investigates the role of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in the relationship between Intellectual Capital Disclosure (ICD) on the one side, and non-audit fees (NAF) and audit fees (AF) on the other side, charged to UK listed companies. The prior literature confirmed mixed effects of ICD on the assessment of Audit Risk (AR) and AF charged to audited companies. By pertaining to the relationship between ICD and AF, many authors affirmed that the variation of the AF is primarily determined by auditor’s effort. However, the relationship between AF and NAF is ambiguous, especially in conditions of instability. Therefore, to test the significance of ICD and NAF on the assessment of AF, an empirical analysis has been performed. The period of the GFC has been investigated in order to test whether the different economic conditions affect the relationships. Data from Thomson Reuter have been analyzed, by extracting data of UK listed firms for the years 2004, 2008, and 2011. Empirical findings show that ICD directly affects neither AF nor NAF, since its effect is mediated by AR. The mediated relationship between ICD on one side, and AF and NAF on the other, varies depending on different economic conditions. Considering the relationship between AF and NAF, a positive relationship has been found during the GFC

PURPOSE:
The aim of this paper is to review the theoretical lenses used in performance measurement and management in a traditional and industry 4.0 environment and to contribute to understanding the current state of research in the field and its future development.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH:
This paper performs a structured review of the existing performance measurement and management literature, with the objective to investigate the current state of research, looking at popular theories in more detail, as well as to propose possible avenues for future consideration for the field to develop further moving forward. Particularly, this paper focusses on and identifies (1) theoretical lenses that are dominating this field, (2) the role played by specific theories and the way different theories are used together and finally, (3) an in-depth dive into relevant theories for performance measurement and management applied in an industry 4.0 environment.
FINDINGS:
Key findings highlight the growing number of publications, leading authors and journals where research is published. The findings also include the identification and detailed analysis of the most popular theories leveraged by scholars also in reference to research methodologies. A thorough analysis of Industry 4.0 performance measurement and management is then carried out, as this is one of the identified emerging themes in the research field. Findings here include the identification of relevant research and the suggestion of significant theories that can help build this specific body of knowledge.
ORIGINALITY/VALUE:
This research offers a key contribution by providing a powerful “theoretical toolkit” to researchers and practitioners working in performance measurement and management and industry 4.0 fields
AB-SD hybrid modelling approach: a framework for evaluating industrial sustainability scenarios
The transformation of industry towards improved sustainability results from a strategic complex setting of factors and through a transformation process. However, such process requires methodologies and tools that support and facilitate the communication and cooperation of different players and their interactions. Hybrid modelling approaches have gained prominence exceeding limitations of traditional methodologies and tools with respect to complexity arisen of industrial sustainability strategies. This paper proposes a hybrid modelling approach based on Agent Based and System Dynamics supporting the analysis and redesign of industrial areas based on sustainable strategy with industrial symbiosis. The results of this work suggest that the hybrid modelling approach can provide useful information about the effectiveness of sustainable issues. Additionally, the model can be applied as a generic framework to different economic sectors including manufacturing, energy system and agriculture

Digitalization technologies for industrial sustainability
Digital technologies are shown to perform a potential role in developing a resource efficient industrial base. The effective adoption of them can help to deliver reduced costs and improve the flexibility and sustainability of manufacturing systems. However, these positive benefits are far from guaranteed and the way in which digital technologies favor the transition towards sustainable manufacturing systems has not been analyzed in detail yet, so more conceptual and empirical investigations are required in this field. This paper develops a conceptual framework, which explains the potential significance of using digital technologies toward efficiency, resilience and sustainability. It also includes evidence from various case studies, which illustrate the core technologies which can potentiality contribute to a sustainable industrial future. The findings show some impressive results concerning the sustainable implications of the digitalization of manufacturing processes. If the predicted benefits can be achieved through digital technologies, they could massively impact on sustainability. © 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V
Approaching Industrial Symbiosis Through Agent-Based Modeling and System Dynamics
Sustainable industrial systems are complex, since they exhibit both detail and dynamic complexity. Only an integrated approach is able to provide a realistic view of such complex systems providing a useful insight of their behaviour. In this paper, a hybrid approach based on Agent Based Modeling (ABM) and System Dynamics (SD) is presented in order to improve modelling insight of an industrial symbiosis (IS) context. Hybrid approaches have gained prominence overpassing limitations of traditional methodologies and tools, as well as computational advances that permit better modelling and analysis of complex systems with a particular focus on sustainability topics exploiting the strengths of both ABM and SD models, while minimizing the drawbacks. Therefore, to provide a methodological proof, an application of the proposed hybrid approach to an industrial symbiosis relevant case is presented and discussed. The methodological approach adopted in this research can be used to investigate a variety of industrial symbiosis cases providing insights usually not achievable with standard techniques and tools
Fad and fashion? The relevance of subjective performance measures
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the use of subjective (objective) performance measures on relevant organisational outcomes, namely perceived managerial discretion (PMD) and manager’s satisfaction with the performance measurement system (PMS). Furthermore, the paper analyses the indirect link between subjective vs objective measures and managers’ satisfaction through PMD. Design/methodology/approach To test the research hypotheses, a paper-based questionnaire was sent to Italian health care managers in Lombardy. Thus, a PLS-SEM analysis was performed on a data set of 97 Italian health care managers. Findings Empirical findings showed that objective measures are more capable of supporting the managerial perception of discretion when compared to more subjective ones such as “fads” and “fashions”, and that managers are more satisfied with the PMS when it is grounded on objective measures rather than subjective ones. Originality/value The paper operationalizes and empirically tests the measure of PMD, linking this to antecedents and consequences. It also extends the literature on subjectivity in the PMS, since it develops new knowledge on the choice between subjective and objective measures by applying this choice to a variety of PMS, whereas prior literature on objective vs subjective measures has mainly focussed on performance evaluation
