The Financial Value of Champagne Houses in a Cobweb Economy
No full textThe objective of the paper is to simulate the corporate value of Champagne makers by taking into account the Champagne market evolution. These measurements are conducted by linking financial debt, performance and valuation to a vertical coordination model of production-consumption within a cobweb economy. The overall model uses the dynamic structure that underlies the strategic interactions amongst grape producers and wine makers. These segments coordinate grape production and trade by forming expectations about final consumption, price and stock risks. The paper examines the dynamics of the financial cash flows and net worth of Champagne houses for the 1977 – 2003 period using system dynamics (SD) modeling principles. The results presented in this paper report on key financial indicators for that period for financial debt, performance and valuation of Champagne makers. No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Axial vessel widening in arborescent monocots

growth by widening xylem conduits downwards. In monocots, the accumulation of hydraulic resistance with height should be
similar, but the absence of secondary growth represents a strong limitation for the maintenance of xylem hydraulic efficiency during
ontogeny. The hydraulic architecture of monocots has been studied but it is unclear how monocots arrange their axial vascular
structure during ontogeny to compensate for increases in height. We measured the vessel lumina and estimated the hydraulic
diameter (Dh) at different heights along the stem of two arborescent monocots, Bactris gasipaes (Kunth) and Guadua angustifolia
(Kunth). For the former, we also estimated the variation in Dh along the leaf rachis. Hydraulic diameter increased basally from the
stem apex to the base with a scaling exponent (b) in the range of those reported for dicot trees (b = 0.22 in
B. gasipaes; b = 0.31 and 0.23 in G. angustifolia). In B. gasipaes, vessels decrease in Dh from the stem’s centre towards the
periphery, an opposite pattern compared with dicot trees. Along the leaf rachis, a pattern of increasing Dh basally was also found
(b = 0.13). The hydraulic design of the monocots studied revealed an axial pattern of xylem conduits similar to those evolved by
dicots to compensate and minimize the negative effect of root-to-leaf length on hydrodynamic resistance to water flow
Flexible quantitative risk assessment for developmental toxicity based on fractional polynomial predictors
No full textRisk assessment for developmental toxicity studies in rodents is faced with the fairly involved data structure of clustered multivariate binary outcomes. While likelihood methods for this setting do not abound, we show that a conditional model, combined with pseudo-likelihood inference and fractional polynomial predictor functions, as proposed by ROYSTON and ALTMAN (1994), are a promising way forward. The methods are illustrated using teratology data collected under the National Toxicology Program
