This paper focuses on the so-called pseudorelatives (or predicative relatives) in Old Italian, specifically
on clauses whose antecedent is the direct object of a perception verb (i.e. vedere). After discussing
the main features of these clauses and comparing them with restrictive and non-restrictive
relatives, the author analyzes their frequency and syntactic properties in a corpus of Tuscan
texts dating back to the 3th and 4th centuries. Big attention is paid to the textual functions carried
out by these constructions out and to their contribution to textual progression
In Italian language subjunctive may occur in main clauses expressing an order – particularly addressed
to a person that is not involved in the communicative situation –, a wish or a desire. In
mostly of these sentences (iussives, auguratives and volitives), subjunctive is introduced by che,
which syntactic nature is rather controversial. After discussing the frequency and the functions
of “che + subjunctive” construction in old Italian, author suggests that che, usually described as a
subordinator, can be considered as a term charged to reduce the virtuality involved by subjunctive
mood and to reinforce the volitive function carried out by these sentences
“Con + N + relativa”: una costruzione assoluta aumentata?
This paper focuses on a particular structure consisting of “con + N + relative clause”. This
construction can be classified in three different types : i) Modal-associative, ii) Circumstantial,
iii) Attendant. After discussing the value of the preposition con and the nature of the relative
which make this structure, the Author defines it as a type of “augmented absolute construction”
carrying out a particular syntactic connexion (between syndesis and asyndesis). Finally
she analyses syntactic, semantic and textual features of three types of “con + N + relative”, both
in contemporary (literary and journalistic) prose and in a corpus of ancient and modern texts
(xivth-xixth centuries)
SCUOLA O SCOLA ? MONOLINGUISMO, POLIMORFIA E VARIAZIONE NEI SILLABARI POSTUNITARI
After the creation of Italian State (1861), state school played an important role in the diffusion of
Italian language and in the process of alphabetization. With the extension of compulsory education,
scholastic publications knew a considerable amount. The high number of handbooks,
anthologies and spelling books edited in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century constitute
an important source to study the teaching practices and the features of Italian taught in school.
In this regard spelling books provide many useful indications: conceived to teach reading and
writing and to reinforce national identity of children, these little volumes try to propose a language
that, even though he refers largely to the Manzonian model, shows a certain degree of
variation
