    Real-world outcomes of Omnipod DASH system use in people with type 1 diabetes: Evidence from the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD) study

    Aims: To evaluate real-world outcomes in people with Type 1 Diabetes (PwT1D) initiated on Omnipod DASH® Insulin Management System. Methods: Anonymized clinical data were submitted to a secure web-based tool within the National Health Service network. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), sensor-derived glucometrics, total daily dose of insulin (TDD), and patient-reported outcome changes between baseline and follow-up were assessed. Individuals were classified to "new-to-pump" (switched from multiple daily injections) and "established-on-pump" (switched from a tethered insulin pump) groups. Results: 276 individuals from 11 centers [66.7 % female; 92 % White British; median age 41 years (IQR 20-50); diabetes duration 20 years (IQR 11-31); 49.3 % within "new-to-pump" group] were included. Baseline HbA1c was 8.0 ± 1.3 % (64 ± 14 mmol/mol). At follow-up [3 years (IQR 1.5-3.2)], HbA1c reduced by 0.3 % [(3 mmol/mol); p = 0.002] across the total population, 0.4 % [(5 mmol/mol); p = 0.001] in those "new-to-pump" and remained unchanged in those "established-on-pump". TDD decreased in the "new-to-pump" cohort (baseline:44.9 ± 21.0units vs follow-up:38.1 ± 15.4units, p = 0.002). Of those asked, 141/143 (98.6 %) stated Omnipod DASH had a positive impact on quality of life. Conclusions: Omnipod DASH was associated with improvements in HbA1c in PwT1D "new-to-pump" and maintained previous HbA1c levels in those "established-on-pump".     Sustainable International Business:A Retrospection and Future Research Direction

    The first section of the book addresses the interaction between international business activities and the economic aspect of sustainability. The first finding of this part of the book is that international business affects and is affected by economic and other pillars of sustainability. For example, in the chapter “Realisation of SDGs in Africa: An Impactful Political CSR Approach,” the author developed a political CSR model and contended that rejuvenating the SDGs in Africa through an impactful PCSR model can unleash the huge potential of international business in the realization of SDGs. In the chapter “Value Creation Impact: Role of Stakeholders in the Development of Sustainable Foreign Trade,” the author revealed that pursuing sustainability in an organization increases sustainable competitive advantage by improving global value chains and the perception of consumers and other market stakeholders. Second, embracing the economic aspect of sustainability requires reshaping the global supply chain functions and value chain activities. For example, in the chapter “Reshaping the World’s Supply Chain? A Case Study of Vietnam’s PAN Group Adopting the Circular Economy Concept,” the authors pointed out that sustainability, circular economy, and supply chain are interconnected concepts that are pivotal in promoting responsible and efficient resource management. In the chapter “Integration of Internal Audit and Sustainability Functions: A Business Model Suggestion,” in order to resolve significant disruptions and inefficiencies in the purchasing processes, the authors developed a novel business model that brings together different areas of expertise, prevents overlapping and duplication of purchasing tasks, and improves interdepartmental communication. Third, this part of the book revealed that firm-level digital capability helps internationalizing firms achieve sustainable economic development by facilitating access to foreign markets. For example, in the chapters “Mitigating the Negative Implications of Fake Social Media News on Internationalizing Firms: The Role of Social Media Capability” and “Network Ties and Opportunity Recognition in SME Internationalization in the Social Media Context,” the author found that social media capability facilitates internationalizing SMEs identify international opportunities, access foreign market information, and enhance the institutional legitimacy in foreign markets

    Curing Cholera: Pathogens, Places and Poverty in South Asia

    In this paper I will seek to provide a new understanding of endemicity of disease in India. Through a study of cholera research in the twentieth century I will argue that disease and its endemicity has to be understood in biological factors as well as within a wider social and economic context. I will discuss the medical efforts at locating the causality of cholera from the nineteenth century in Indian climate, water bodies and human anatomy to show that cholera is no more a biological phenomena than water is an ecological or environmental problem. Both are essentially political and economic questions

    Deterministic annealing algorithm: tutorial, application to pickup and delivery problem and computational aspects

    The deterministic annealing (DA) method, used for the solution of several nonconvex problems, offers the ability to avoid shallow local minima of a given cost surface and the ability to minimize the cost function even when there are many local minima. The method is established in a probabilistic framework through basic information-theoretic techniques such as maximum entropy and random coding. It arises naturally in the context of statistical mechanics by the emulation of a physical process whereby a solid is slowly cooled and at zero temperature assumes its minimum energy configuration. We start with the introduction to DA method and then present a tutorial to describe the algorithm steps. Also, we discuss the connections of DA method with Statistical Mechanics and Rate-Distortion Theory. Next, we present the application of DA method to pickup and deliver scheduling problem with time windows. Finally, a computational complexity analysis for DA is presented for a given temperature schedule.     Evolution as a design tool to inform biomolecular engineering

    Enzyme biotechnology is a critical component of technologies needed for increased sustainable materials processing. Along with the ability to rapidly synthesize proteins through fermentation, there is a need to be able to alter enzyme functionality in specific ways to suit the desired application. For instance, industrial enzymes with increased stability at higher temperatures or altered pH optima can improve productivity in large-scale bioreactors through improved catalytic rates and lowered costs due to cooling and reduced contamination. This research aims to provide the scientific community with a suite of design tools and methodologies for protein engineering experiments and research. Specifically, these methods utilize a foundation of concepts from molecular evolution to provide insight into the innovation process in molecular engineering. Methods developed in this study aim to increase thermal stability of an enzyme by engineering disulfide bonds and electrostatic salt bridges on the surface of the enzyme. Two methods to assist disulfide engineering were developed- 1) A neural network model to predict disulfide bonds within existing structures from mutual information and a continuous distributed representation of protein sequence. 2) A methodology incorporating statistics on the structural information of disulfide bonds in conjunction with evolutionary patterns to rank order specific design choices. A similar approach was developed for engineering salt bridges. The methodology for developing geometric constraints and utilizing evolutionary patterns to engineer salt bridges was validated with experiments on 1,4 -glucan branching enzymes by collaborators. The neural network model achieves state of the art accuracy (80%) and in addition, the impact of the protein sequence representation, mutual information and cysteine separation distance on performance of the model were analysed. in a particular disulfide engineering experiment. The trained long short term memory (LSTM) neural network model also serves as a model of disulfide bond sequence motifs so as to develop an understanding of the constraints for disulfide bond formation. The methodology using statistical constraints on disulfide bonds was prototyped as a PyMOL script that identifies potential pairs of residues on the surface of an enzyme for modification to disulfide-capable cysteine residues.
