Unveiling the complex glassy dynamics of square shoulder systems: Simulations and theory

No full text
We performed extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, supplemented by Mode Coupling Theory (MCT) calculations, for the square shoulder model, a purely repulsive potential where the hardcore is complemented by a finite shoulder. For the one-component version of this model, MCT predicted [Sperl et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 145701 (2010)] the presence of diffusion anomalies both upon cooling and upon compression and the occurrence of glass-glass transitions. In the simulations, we focus on a non-crystallising binary mixture, which, at the investigated shoulder width, shows a non-monotonic behaviour of the diffusion upon cooling but not upon isothermal compression. In addition, we find the presence of a disconnected glass-glass line in the phase diagram, ending in two higher order singularities. These points generate a logarithmic dependence of the density correlators as well as a subdiffusive behaviour of the mean squared displacement, although with the interference of the nearby liquid-glass transition. We also perform novel MCT calculations using as input the partial structure factors obtained within MD, confirming the simulation results. The presence of two hard sphere glasses, differing only in their hardcore length, is revealed, showing that the simple competition between the two is sufficient for creating a rather complex dynamical behaviour. In this interview, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak revisits the debate between essentialism and anti-essentialism by reconsidering various theoretical frameworks she has engaged with over her intellectual journey. These frameworks include deconstruction, Marxism, and feminisms, alongside reflections on the role of philosophy. One key focus of her reflection is the concept of strategic essentialism in understanding social movements, diverging from her previous stances. Spivak suggests viewing it as an ongoing critique of essentialist approaches, emphasizing the importance of maintaining critical, strategic, and indispensable elements within a minimalizable essence. She also stresses the significance of authorial positioning and autobiographical narratives, drawing on childhood lessons. She explores teaching as a practice that can convey the impossibility of fixed essences rather than engaging in theoretical debates. She examines her own place within the Subaltern Studies Group and the political connotations of the “Third World.” Towards the end, she delves into the practical perspective on essences concerning empirical realities and the dynamic between researchers and their audiences. Multiple Glass Singularities and Isodynamics in a Core-Softened Model for Glass-Forming Systems

We investigate the slow dynamics of a simple glass former whose interaction potential is the sum of a hard core and a square shoulder repulsion. According to mode coupling theory, the competition between the two repulsive length scales gives rise to a complex dynamic scenario: besides the fluid-glass line, the theory predicts a glass-glass line in the temperature-packing fraction plane with two end points. Interestingly, for critical values of the square-shoulder parameters, such end points can be accessed from the liquid phase. We verify, via extensive numerical simulations, the existence of both points through the observation of an unconventional subdiffusive/logarithmic dynamical behavior. Unexpectedly, we also discover that the simultaneous presence of two end points generates special loci in the state diagram along which the dynamics is identical at all length and time scales

Gayatri Rajapatni's Leadership Strategy as a Revolutionary Woman Designer of the Majapahit Empire's Vision

Modern societies view women as equal to men, especially in government. conversely, societies with traditional stigmas view women as having power only in the domestic sphere. Historically, Javanese women, particularly in the ancient Javanese era, held a strategic position in shaping government policy. This is evident in the presence of Gayatri Rajapatni in the Majapahit Kingdom. Gayatri served as an advisor to the king and a policy maker, although she was not legally the queen. This study aims to determine the leadership strategy of Gayatri Rajapatni, a figure behind the success of Majapahit. This study used historical research methods and resulted in an analysis of Gayatri Rajapatni's leadership strategy in building the Majapahit Empire. The author concludes that Gayatri Rajapatni employed various leadership strategies to implement her vision for Majapahit's glory, namely by developing tactics and leadership patterns inherited from her father (Kertanegara)

Fast Interlayer Energy Transfer from the Lower Bandgap MoS2 to the Higher Bandgap WS2

No full text
This description is related to the article - Fast Interlayer Energy Transfer from the Lower Bandgap MoS2 to the Higher Bandgap WS2Energy transfer (ET) is a dipole-dipole interaction, mediated by the virtual photon. Traditionally, ET happens from the higher (donor) to lower bandgap (acceptor) material. However, in some rare instances, ET can happen from the lower-to-higher bandgap material, depending on the strong overlap between the acceptor photoluminescence (PL) and the donor absorption spectra. In this work, we report an ET process from the lower bandgap MoS2 to the higher bandgap WS2, due to a near 'resonant' overlap between the MoS2 B and WS2 A excitonic levels. Changing the MoS2 bandgap from direct-to-indirect by increasing the layer number results in a reduced ET rate, evidenced by the quenching of the WS2 PL emission. Our work shows at 300 K, the ET timescale of ~33 fs is faster than the reported thermalization of the MoS2 excitonic intervalley scattering (K to K') time and competing with the ultrafast charge transfer timescale. Thus, allowing us to open a new direction in understanding the competing inter/intralayer processes.</p

Gayatri Spivak: ethics, subalternity and the critique of postcolonial reason

No full text
This study offers an advanced and sustained analysis of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s thought. In particular, it traces the ethical dimension of Spivak’s thought in and through her persistent critique of Marxism, feminism, deconstruction and postcolonial studies. In so doing, the book seeks to argue that what underpins Spivak’s essays and interventions is a political commitment to achieve what she calls a relation of ethical singularity with the subaltern. The book offers a concise and authoritative introduction to the work of this increasingly important thinker; it is written by an author with an established reputation as a critic and interpreter of Spivak's work; it provides an in-depth analysis of Spivak's relationship to postcolonialism, feminism, Marxism, and subaltern studies; it deals with the complete trajectory of Spivak's writing, from her early translations of Derrida, to her recent contributions to debates on human rights, terrorism and globalization; and it addresses some of Spivak's most recent writings
