Transport and proximity effect in unconventional ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructures
2009 - 2010This dissertation collects results of my own work about heterostructures with unconventional ferromagnets
and superconductors. It both introduces the matter by reviewing part of the existing literature
and it includes original results. In particular charge and spin transport in ferromagnet/superconductor
bilayer, Josephson effect in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor junctions, and proximity effect
in ferromagnet/triplet superconductor structures are examined. All work has been supervised by Prof.
Canio Noce and Dr. Mario Cuoco from Dipartimento di Fisica “E. R. Caianiello”, Università degli Studi di
Salerno. I have also benefited from collaborations with Prof. Alfonso Romano and Dr. Paola Gentile from
the same department. Part of the work has been supervised by Prof. Asle Sudbø and Prof. Jacob Linder
from Department of Physics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. I have also benefited from
collaboration with Henrik Enoksen from the same department. [edited by Author]IX n.s

Characteristics of gastro-esophageal reflux episodes in Barrett's esophagus, erosive esophagitis and healthy volunteers
BACKGROUND: Gastro-esophageal reflux is considered a major culprit in the pathogenesis of Barrett's esophagus (BE). Still, there is controversy on the role of weakly acidic and weakly alkaline reflux in BE. To compare characteristics of reflux episodes patients with BE, erosive esophagitis (EE), and healthy volunteers (HV).
METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients with BE (75 short-segment BE, 25 long-segment BE), 50 with EE and 48 HV underwent multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH off-therapy. We quantified esophageal acid exposure, characteristics, and proximal extension of reflux episodes.
KEY RESULTS: Total and acid reflux episodes gradually increased from HV [28 (17.5-43) and 18 (8-31)] to EE [73.5 (54-96) and 52 (39-68)], short-segment BE (SSBE) [83 (73.2-131) and 65 (43.3-95)] and long-segment BE (LSBE) [105 (102-187) and 77 (75-107)]. Weakly acidic reflux episodes were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in LSBE [36 (27.5-50.5)] and SSBE [34 (18.5-41)] compared to EE [21.5 (15-37)] and HV [19 (14-25)]. No differences in terms of proportion of acid, weakly acidic and weakly alkaline reflux were found [HV (49%-49%-2%) vs EE (68%-32%-1%) vs SSBE (65%-34%-1%) vs LSBE (69%-30%-1%); P = ns]. In LSBE, a higher percentage of reflux episodes (P < 0.05) reached the proximal esophagus (59%) compared with SSBE (43%).
CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES: Barrett esophagus patients have more severe reflux as shown by the number of acid and weakly acidic reflux episodes, re-reflux episodes and proximal migration. Given that PPI change only the pH of the refluxate, the role of weakly acidic reflux in Barrett's patients on acid suppressive therapy warrants further investigation
Un miroir infidèle : la guerre d’Espagne vue à travers le Giornale Italiano de Milan
After a brief introduction on the state of the press in Italy during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period, the article gives some information about the foundation and programme of the Giornale Italiano, and its founder Vincenzo Cuoco. Then the Author, providing a wide choice of quotations about the Peninsular War, demonstrates how the Italian newspaper was in reality just a faithful copy of the French ones, participating to the same rigid frame of the Napoleonic propaganda in Europe

Upgrading investment regulations in second pillar pension systems : a proposal for Colombia
The passivity of the demand for pension products is one of the striking features of mandatory pension systems. Consequently, the provision of multiple investment alternatives to households (multifund schemes) does not ensure that contributions are invested efficiently. In addition, despite the theoretical findings that short term return maximization is not conductive to long-term return maximization, the regulatory framework of pension fund management companies puts excessive emphasis on short-term maximization. Therefore, it is not obvious that typical regulatory framework of pension funds is conductive to optimal pensions. By establishing a set of default options on investment portfolios, this paper proposes a mechanism to align the incentives of the pension fund management companies with the long-term objectives of the contributors. The paper provides a methodology, which is subsequently applied to Colombia.Debt Markets,Emerging Markets,Financial Literacy,Mutual Funds,Investment and Investment Climate
AbstractTaking ‘post-metaphysical thought’ in the sense of the modern and positivistic criticism to metaphysics as a form of knowledge, the article presents analytic philosophy of religion as a response to the thesis that religious language has no meaning since it does not refer to any empirically verifiable or falsifiable data. Firstly, it is presented the non-realist reply to the post-metaphysical challenge. The main non-realist author introduced is D. Z. Phillips, who based his ideas on Wittgenstein’s philosophy. According to this proposal, the meaning of religious language is not given by reference to a transcendent reality, but to its use as an ethical and existential guide. Next, it is expounded the realist position to the antimetaphysical criticism, using ideas by some of the leading authors in the analytic philosophy of religion: Alvin Plantinga, William Alston and Richard Swinburne. Apart from holding that religious language has a real referential meaning, they argue that metaphysics is not only cognitively defensible, but also an important condition for scientific reasoning.
Kant, Quine e o conhecimento a priori
It seeks to map modern conceptions about a priori knowledge, understood as truths
linked to reason, to intellectual intuitions, to rational reflections independent of
experiences, which have been the object of controversy for at least two centuries. It
emphasizes the Kantian conception of a priori knowledge, set forth in the Critique of pure
reason, published in 1789, as well as one of his great critiques by Willard Quine in the text
"Two dogmas of empiricism", published in 1951. The author concludes that it is not
established yet a philosophical theory that can affirm the absence of a priori knowledge, but
only the modification of its characteristics
