Secondary hyperparathyroidism prevalence and prognostic role in elderly males with heart failure
Aim Evaluation of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) and its prognostic impact on all- cause mortality in elderly males with heart failure (HF). Methods Seventy three males (67 +/- 7 years old) with systolic HF were included. Baseline PTH was measured. Patients were grouped according to PTH cut- off levels of 65 pg/ ml (> 65 pg/ ml = SHPT vs. normal PTH). All- cause mortality was evaluated at 6- year follow- up. Results SHPT was diagnosed in 43 (59 %) patients. They were more severe compared to the patients with normal PTH regarding NYHA functional class (2.4 +/- 0.5 vs. 2.1 +/- 0.2, p = 0.001), quality of life score (34 +/- 14 vs. 24 +/- 12, p = 0.005), 6- min walking distance (378 +/- 79 vs. 446 +/- 73 m, p < 0.0001), left ventricular ejection fraction (27 +/- 8 vs. 31 +/- 7 %, p = 0.019), and NT- proBNP [2452 (3399) vs. 918 (1372) pg/ ml, p < 0.0001]. No differences in age, vitamin D status, and renal function were noted between studied groups. A total of 41 (56 %) patients died within 6 years of follow- up. Kaplan- Meier survival analysis showed impaired long- term survival in patients with SHPT versus patients with normal PTH ( p = 0.009). The rate of death was highest (75 %) in the group of patients with SHPT and NT- proBNP levels above median value ( p =0.003). Cox regression analysis demonstrated that NTproBNP was the single independent predictor of all- cause mortality at 6- year follow- up [HR 3.698 (1.927- 7.095), p < 0.0001]. Conclusion SHPT was highly prevalent in elderly males with HF and was associated with impaired survival. HF patients with SHPT had more severe disease compared to the patients with normal serum PTH. Determination of serum PTH levels provided additional value to NT- proBNP for risk stratification in these patients.Serbian Ministry of Science [175033
Serbian kinship system and its terminology
So far as is known the Serbian kinship system has not hitherto been fully explored. This thesis is an attempt to explain the intricacies and implications of the kinship terms. It is also an attempt to present the Serbian kinship system historically as well as contemporarily with the emphasis on the causes and consequences of social change. The kinship terminology is examined linguistically; the kinship system is examined anthropologically. In this respect the author finds an ideal meeting ground of the two disciplines. Throughout the thesis both disciplines are intermingled, being an integral part of each other. The terminology and system are examined from as many points of view as possible. The picture is given in toto without a value judgment. Besides presenting the kinship system as reflected in folk literature, the author also presents it in a less favourable light: the curses pertinent to the kin-terms are also mentioned. Consanguineal, affinal and ceremonial kin are given equal attention in this thesis, because they cannot be separated socio-culturally. Consanguineal kin-terms are the same regardless of the sex of the ego; affinal relatives have different terms depending on the sex of ego.
Serbian kinship terminology is highly developed and indeed one of the most elaborate in existence. All Serbian kin-terms tend to be denotative. The kinship terms are developed equally for the ones that are not graphically represented as well as for those that are. There are 219 terms for 119 various kinship categories. For the relatives close to ego the number of synonyms is high, reaching a maximum of ten synonyms for the father.
Because of the great number of synonyms the author has to introduce some new nomenclature: in this thesis, the STANDARD term is most conservative; the other terms are NON-STANDARD,Arts, Faculty ofCentral, Eastern, and Northern European Studies, Department ofGraduat
Mile Savic as an interpreter of the recent south Slavic past
The subject of this paper is the interpretation of the recent South Slavic
past given in the works of Mile Savic, a Serbian philosopher and social
theorist, who recently passed away. The wars for territorial heritage of the
former Yugoslavia, the aggression of the NATO alliance on the Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia, the project of Euro-Atlantic integration of Serbia -
are just some of the most significant thematic points of that interpretation.
By providing an exhaustive analysis of Savic?s attitudes to these and kindred
phenomena of the recent political and social history of the region, the
author concludes that, in a large mosaic of knowledge of a ?time rich in
misfortunes? (Tacitus), the piece attributed to it by this Serbian
philosopher, who left the intellectual and life stage too early, will be, by
all means, among the most significant and precious ones.</jats:p
Case of ex-Yugoslavia and struggle for its interpretation: Case of NGO's in Serbia
In this article author considers the case of disintegration/decomposition of Yugoslavia from the angle of struggle for interpretation that several NGO's have fought on Serbian public scene. Clue of whole matter is in a kind of politic of interpretation engaged by these NGO's as for the near Yugoslav past. After the brief summary of this kind of interpretation author asks for key tenets of alleged "new politicity" that have been formed as a model of civil activity in Serbia during the last decade. In concluding part of the article geopolitical dimension of that phenomena is pointed out as well as importance of its precise legislation needed to restrict this kind of practice considerably
Non-governmental organizations and politics of interpretation of South-Slavic’s recent past
In the text the author considers politics of interpretation of South-Slavic peoples' recent past, which was demonstrated by the most prominent activists of Serbian non-governmental organizations. By summarizing the interpretation in a few points, the author attempts to identify its key features: arrogance and extremism as a style, counter factuality as a strategy and anti-Serbian nationalism and racism as an ideological strongpoint. In the final section of the text, what is pleaded is a precise legal regulation of that delicate area of civil activism, which in the last decade has presented a malignant protuberance on destroyed social tissue of Serbia and serious threat to the rest of its considerably lost national interests

Parathyroid hormone response to vitamin D insufficiency in elderly: Males with chronic heart failure
Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) may contribute to the systemic illness that accompanies chronic heart failure (CHF). Healthy elderly with vitamin D deficiency who did not develop hyperparathyroidism (functional hypoparathyroidism, FHPT) had lower mortality than those who did. This study was designed to examine determinants of the PTH response in the vitamin D insufficient CHF patients. Sixty five vitamin D insufficient males with NYHA class II and III and 20 control subjects age ≥ 55 years were recruited. Echocardiography, physical performance, NT-pro-BNP, PTH, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), adiponectin and bone activity surrogate markers (OPG, RANKL, OC, β-CTx) were assessed. Increased NYHA class was associated with SHPT, while physical performance was inferior compared to FHPT. SHPT was associated with lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and flow mediated dilatation, but with higher left heart dimensions, left ventricular mass index and right ventricular systolic pressure. CHF patients with SHPT had increased NT-pro-BNP, adiponectin and bone markers, but decreased 25(OH)D compared to those with FHPT. Independent determinants for SHPT in CHF patients with vitamin D insufficiency were LVEF, adiponectin and β-CTx, irrespective of renal function and serum vitamin D levels. In conclusion, increased PTH levels, but not low vitamin D, demonstrated close relation to CHF severity
Serbia in the processes of European integrations: Between traumatic experience and real politic necessity
The article contains an explanation of the topic to be dealt with by the author in the next research cycle. In the first part of the article author try to identify the main obstacles facing Serbia in the imperative processes of its European integrations. According to the author, those obstacles are numerous and mostly unique, based on the fact that in the last decade Serbian people was a subject of complete state disintegration to which the most powerful external contribution was given by the USA and Western Europe itself. In spite of those obstacles, Serbia faces inevitable duty to carry out a complete political, economic and cultural reconstitution of its destroyed society as a condition sine qua non its own survival and successful development. In the final section of the text, what is pleaded is realistic approach to the multitude of the problems facing Serbia on the threshold of the new millennium
