A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Topic alignment between two texts is found to increase author verification precision, and an authors writing style is found to change over time, but not more significantly after 3 years than after 1 year.Information ArchitectureWISElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Dockerizing indri for OSIRRC 2019
The Lemur Project was set up in 2000 by the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval at UMass Amherst. It is one of the longest lasting open-source projects in the information retrieval (IR) research community. Among the released tools is Indri, a popular search engine that was designed for language-modeling based approaches to IR. For OSIRRC 2019 we dockerized Indri and added support for the Robust04, Core18 and GOV2 test collections.Web Information System
Node-indri: Moving the indri toolkit to the modern web stack
We introduce node-indri, a Node.js module that acts as a wrapper around the Indri toolkit, and thus makes an established IR toolkit accessible to the modern web stack. node-indri exposes many of Indri’s functionalities and provides direct access to document content and retrieval scores for web development (in contrast to, for instance, the Pyndri wrapper). This setup reduces the amount of glue code that has to be developed and maintained when researching search interfaces, which today tend to be developed with specific JavaScript libraries such as React.js, Angular.js or Vue.js. The node-indri repository is open-sourced at https://github.com/felipemoraes/node-indri.Web Information System
An Axiomatic Approach to Diagnosing Neural IR Models
Traditional retrieval models such as BM25 or language models have been engineered based on search heuristics that later have been formalized into axioms. The axiomatic approach to information retrieval (IR) has shown that the effectiveness of a retrieval method is connected to its fulfillment of axioms. This approach enabled researchers to identify shortcomings in existing approaches and “fix” them. With the new wave of neural net based approaches to IR, a theoretical analysis of those retrieval models is no longer feasible, as they potentially contain millions of parameters. In this paper, we propose a pipeline to create diagnostic datasets for IR, each engineered to fulfill one axiom. We execute our pipeline on the recently released large-scale question answering dataset WikiPassageQA (which contains over 4000 topics) and create diagnostic datasets for four axioms. We empirically validate to what extent well-known deep IR models are able to realize the axiomatic pattern underlying the datasets. Our evaluation shows that there is indeed a positive relation between the performance of neural approaches on diagnostic datasets and their retrieval effectiveness. Based on these findings, we argue that diagnostic datasets grounded in axioms are a good approach to diagnosing neural IR models.Web Information System
Overview of the 2019 open-source IR replicability challenge (OSIRRC 2019)
The Open-Source IR Replicability Challenge (OSIRRC 2019), organized as a workshop at SIGIR 2019, aims to improve the replicability of ad hoc retrieval experiments in information retrieval by gathering a community of researchers to jointly develop a common Docker specification and build Docker images that encapsulate a diversity of systems and retrieval models. We articulate the goals of this workshop and describe the "jig" that encodes the Docker specification. In total, 13 teams from around the world submitted 17 images, most of which were designed to produce retrieval runs for the TREC 2004 Robust Track test collection. This exercise demonstrates the feasibility of orchestrating large, community-based replication experiments with Docker technology. We envision OSIRRC becoming an ongoing community-wide effort to ensure experimental replicability and sustained progress on standard test collections.Web Information System
Mutabor! Kunstmärchen von Wilhelm Hauff im medialen Transfer
The fairy tales by Wilhelm Hauff (published 1826–1828) are among the best-known fairytales in German-speaking countries. They form a mixture of romantic fairytale understanding, Biedermeier bourgeoisie, critical-realistic portrayal and adventure story. Their author was familiar with the finesses of market-oriented literary production of his time. He created popular texts that were based on the conventions of several genres at the same time and addressed them explicitly to girls and boys as well as implicitly to an adult readership. Initially discredited as formula fiction, some of Hauff’s fairy tales were soon canonized as children’s literature and frequently adapted to film, from the early 20th century onwards. The article introduces early film adaptations of The Story of Little Muck, Caliph Stork and The Cold Heart and sheds light on their contemporary environment. Depending on the availability of historical sources, different aspects of production, distribution and reception are considered. The films adapt the originals in their specific ways – historicizing, updating, ideologizing, aestheticizing, or psychologizing the story. Through expansion, modification and transposition, they contribute to the transformation of the original text and its levels of meaning, but also to innovative continuation, to differentiation and diversification
