    Polarization optics of GRIN lenses

    No full text
"In this paper we show that the matrix representation for a linear retarder, given by Jones calculus, can be successfully applied to describe the birefringence properties of GRIN lenses for meridional rays. The usefulness of this description is experimentally verified by comparing the output pattern of a GRIN lens obtained in a linear polariscope with the predicted conoscopic pattern.

The work of Aleksandr Grin (1880-1932) : a study of Grin's philosophical outlook

    No full text
There has been to date no attempt at a detailed examination of Aleksandr Grin’s philosophical views interpreted on the basis of his literary work. Whilst some critics have noted interesting links between the writer’s oeuvre and a few popular philosophers, this has usually been done in passing and on an ad hoc basis. This thesis aims to fill this gap by reconstructing Grin’s views in relation to the European philosophical tradition. The main body of the thesis consists of three parts built on and named after three essential themes in philosophy: External World, Happiness and Morality. Part One delineates Grin’s views on nature and civilisation: I argue first that his cult of nature makes it possible to conceive of Grin as a pantheistic thinker close to Rousseau and Bergson, and then I reconstruct the author’s criticism of urbanisation and industrialisation. In the second part I assess the place of happiness in Grin’s world-view, indicating its similarities to the philosophy of various thinkers from the Ancients to Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. After sketching a general picture of the concept of happiness in Grin’s works, I discuss the place of material and immaterial factors in the writer’s outlook. I also gather maxims expressed by the protagonists in his fiction that can be taken as recommendations concerning ways of achieving and defending happiness. Finally, I link happiness with the problem of morality in Grin’s oeuvre. In the final part I examine modes of moral behaviour as displayed by the author’s protagonists. Firstly, I argue that in Grin’s works we find numerous examples and themes that allow us to perceive him as an existentialist. Secondly, I indicate Grin’s adherence to rules of conduct commonly associated with chivalric literature. Thirdly, I emphasise the importance of Promethean-like characters in the moral hierarchy of Grin’s protagonists

Metamaterial-Based Planar GRIN Lens Antenna for D-Band Wireless Communications

    No full text
This paper presents a metamaterial-based planar GRIN lens antenna for wireless communications, modeled and designed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The antenna is designed to work at 140 GHz in the D-band, proposed for the next mobile generation (6G). Such devices could be produced by using the SiGe technology, that allows large scale production. The proposed device shows a 11 dB gain in the center band. This value is about five times higher than the same antenna without the lens

We achieves switchable between autostereoscopic 2-view 3-D and 2-D display on a 10.1-inch LCD panel using GRIN LC lens with a 20 um cell gap and 14 volt driving voltage. Simulation results such as refraction distribution and 3-D crosstalk verify the performance of this LC lens for autostereoscopic 2-D/3-D switchable display.</jats:p

Current taxonomic composition of European genebank material documented in EURISCO

    No full text
Taxonomy plays an essential role in genebank documentation. It is often the first level at which users search material, and it determines the protocols used in the management of collections. Especially, when plant genetic resources information is pooled in systems such as EURISCO, the European catalogue of ex situ plant genetic resources, problems regarding technical handling of taxonomic nomenclature, such as lack of standardization and low quality of data, become apparent. These problems were studied by analysing the content of EURISCO and mapping the taxon names in EURISCO on those used in the United States Department of Agriculture genebank system GRIN-Tax. Thus, the number of spelling errors and the level of standardization could be quantified and improved. An analysis of the content of EURISCO was made, showing a highly unbalanced distribution over crops: 50% of the accessions belong to ten genera only. Mapping EURISCO on the crops listed in Annex 1 of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture showed that 67% of the accessions in EURISCO belong to crops in that list

A 2-D Multi-Beam GRIN Lens Using Multilayer Metasurfaces

    No full text
A new design method of gradient-index (GRIN) lenses is presented to obtain wide multi-beam coverage and high aperture efficiency. Multilayer metasurfaces using effective medium concept are deployed for the lens implementations. The radiation performance of the GRIN lens has been validated based on microstrip array illuminations. The design theory has been well verified with both simulation and measurement
