Impact of Paracetamol Impurities on Face Properties: Investigating the Surface of Single Crystals Using TOF-SIMS
Understanding
the mechanism of interaction between pharmaceutical
molecules (APIs) and impurities on crystal surfaces is a key concept
in understanding purification and for the design of pharmaceutical
crystallization processes. Several techniques may be used to study
crystal surface properties, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which provide detailed
imaging and elemental surface characterization. Time of flight secondary
ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) is valuable in determining molecular
identity and distribution. By combining TOF-SIMS, SEM, and optical
(OM) and Raman microscopies, we can evaluate the usefulness of TOF-SIMS
as a surface characterization technique for pharmaceutical crystals.
4-Nitrophenol has been selected as an impurity that can be incorporated
during crystallization of acetaminophen (paracetamol). This study
explores the distribution of impurity and its concentration on the
different crystal faces of samples obtained by crystallization over
a range of impurity loadings and supersaturation conditions. Raman
maps of paracetamol single crystal faces were analyzed using the characteristic
Raman peak intensity of 4-nitrophenol to identify regions where it
accumulated; Raman maps of three single crystals produced in the presence
of 4-nitrophenol using different crystallization procedures highlight
how it can be difficult to detect very low concentrations of similar
chemical species. In contrast, the 4-nitrophenol monoisotopic mass
obtained via TOF-SIMS was shown to be detectable in all the three
single crystals produced. This indicates that TOF-SIMS can be a valuable
technique for single crystal impurity distribution mapping even when
the impurity concentration is very low

D-SIMS and ToF-SIMS quantitative depth profiles comparison on ultra thin oxynitrides
To realise gate dielectrics in the present ULSI technology ultra thin oxynitrides are used. Nitrogen quantitative depth profiles are mandatory to characterise this material.
Depth resolution is the key analytical parameter to obtain useful ultra thin oxides characterisation. To improve this resolution very low primary ion impact energy is required. In the present paper, we compare quantitative depth profiles carried out by dynamic-SIMS and ToF-SIMS, respectively.
Dynamic-SIMS analyses have been performed using a Cameca 4-f and the new Cameca Sc-Ultra 300 instrument. Different impact energies and incidence angles were used in combination with MCs+ ion monitoring.
The D-SIMS profiles at keV and sub keV primary beam impact energies, are discussed and compared with ToF-SIMS data obtained using a IONTOF IV instrument
Psychometric Properties of a German Version of the “Satisfaction with Information about Medicines Scale” (SIMS-D)
ABSTRACTObjectiveThe aim of this study was to translate the Satisfaction with Information about Medicines Scale (SIMS) into German and test its psychometric properties in a German primary care setting. The SIMS was developed to assess the extent to which patients feel they have received enough information about their medicines.MethodsThree hundred seventy chronically ill patients were included in the study. The SIMS was translated to SIMS-D (German version) and evaluated in terms of acceptability, internal consistency, test–retest reliability, discriminant, and criterion-related validity.ResultsThe SIMS-D showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's α 0.92) and adequate test–retest reliability (Pearson's r > 0.7). Relationships to external criteria regarding medication management were acceptable (Spearman's ρ > 0.4). The SIMS-D was reasonably well accepted (return rate of 71%); however, older people produced more missing values when filling in the questionnaire.ConclusionsPreliminary evidence was given that the SIMS-D is a suitable instrument for measuring patient satisfaction with information about medicines in German primary care settings
Patents, R and D, and the Stock Market Rate of Return
The purpose of this paper is to present and estimate a model which allows one to use the recently computerized U.S. Patent Office's data base to identify when and where changes in inventive output have occurred. The model assumes a firm which chooses a research strategy to maximize the expected discounted value of the net cash flows from its activities, and a stock market that evaluates this expectation at different dates (it is a version of the Lucas-Prescott, 1971, investment model). Patents are taken as an indicator of the output of the firm's research laboratories. These assumptions place a set of testable restrictions on the stochastic process generating patents, R&D, and the stock market rate of return on the firm's equity (the econometric framework used is that of a restricted index, or dynamic factor-analysis model [Sargent and Sims, 1977; Geweke, 1977b]). The data contain observations on these three variables for 120 firms over an eight year period. The model fits these data quite well and the final section reports on the implications of the parameter estimates.
