Comparing Cournot and Bertrand Equilibria in a Differentiated Duopoly with Product R&D
No full textThis paper compares Bertrand and Cournot equilibria in a differentiated duopoly with substitute goods and product R&D. I find that R&D expenditure, prices and firms� net profits are always higher under quantity competition than under price competition. Furthermore, output, consumer surplus and total welfare are higher in the Bertrand equilibrium than in the Cournot equilibrium if either R&D spillovers are weak or products are sufficiently differentiated. If R&D spillovers are strong and products are not too differentiated, then output, consumer surplus and total welfare are lower in the Bertrand case than in the Cournot case. Thus a key finding of the paper is that there are circumstances where quantity competition can be more beneficial than price competition both for consumers and for firms.

No full textWe investigate the question of endogenous choice of price and quantity competition in a mixed duopoly where both welfare maximising public firm and profit maximising private firm invest in cost-reducing R&D. In contrary to the conventional belief that Cournot competition arises in equilibrium, we find that price competition constitutes equilibrium. We further argue that the results that Cournot profit is strictly higher than Bertrand in standard oligopoly and that the Bertrand profit is strictly higher than Cournot in mixed oligopoly, both hold when the public and private firm engage in R&D. We also find that the public firm is more innovative than the private firm

A free entry Bertrand Nash equilibrium (FEBE) exists if and only if relative market size is sufficiently large. It is shown that there exist some equilibria that are ignored in the literature on IO. In addition, in this setting (perfectly or nearly perfectly) competitive equilibria exist.
