Material-oriented product development by QFD4Mat material selection strategy approach
Beyond the already published SpringerBrief of the author on Material Selection strategy titled “Material Selections by a Hybrid Multi-Criteria Approach”, US Springer, 2015, the QFD4Mat method is presented as it has been teaching to engineering students as material selection strategy learning tool, as well as it has been adopting in big automotive sector industry that employs training and knowledge transfer. Structured on the classic quality function deployment approach, one key of success of QFD4Mat method is its open-source customizable platform by which any multidisciplinary teamwork with varying specialties and languages can actively participate to specific product development decision-making process, together with material specialists. The QFD4Mat method goes beyond usual Quality Function Deployment (shortly, QFD) technique by creation of two useful graphic analysis tools: (a) the material value curves for product and the Performance–Cost–Receptiveness (PCR) bubble maps, namely, two immediate infographic snapshots of the best product value material solution for the specific challenge
‘Too humble and sad’: The effect of humility and emotional display when a politician talks about a moral issue
Humble leadership can be defined as a positive psychological feature that allows for admitting one’s own limitations, being open to new ideas and giving a voice to, and recognizing the merits of, others. Humility has been associated with positive emotions, like gratitude and elevation, however it has been neglected in the political domain, seen on the contrary as the management of power. The present experimental study was aimed at exploring the possible persuasive effect of a humble politician by considering the role played by emotional display (joy, calm, sadness and anger) when the politician discusses an ethical issue (such as hosting immigration). Contrary to our expectations, humble communication elicited negative emotions and evaluations of the politician, especially when the politician exhibited a sad facial display; further, it induced in voters a state of personal distress towards immigrants, and thus a negative association with a hosting orientation
Playing to help. Using a game simulation as a tool to observe how mothers of chronic ill children tend to over-help them and how they evaluate their helping behaviours
The article discusses the idea of using a simulation game, as a methodological tool particularly apt to observe the over-helping phenomenon in mother-child helping relations, in the case of chronic illness of the child. First of all, the article discusses theories about the phenomenon of over-helping, defined as an excess of help, compared with the need of the receiver, and describes its psychological and social costs in the case of chronic illness. Second, main reasons for choosing a methodology based on a simulation game are discussed. Finally, an empirical research based on this technique is presented. Results show that mothers of children affected by a chronic disease tend to over-help (i.e. to give an executive help) more than mother of healthy children do. Furthermore, mothers of children affected by a chronic disease significantly differ from mothers of healthy children, when evaluating their own emotions. Particularly, they estimate they felt more relieved after helping their child, than mothers of healthy children do. When mothers of chronically ill children helped their child in an instrumental way, negative emotions (discomfort, anxiety and embarrassment) seem to be correlated to their more functional help giving behaviour. In summary, data seem to suggest, in line with the model, that mothers of chronically ill children tend to over-help their children mostly in order to alleviate their own anxiety, due to the illness condition of their children. In spite of this, when mothers of children affected by a chronic disease give their children adequate help, they feel more concerned than mothers of healthy children do. This could be linked to the fact that they fear that their children, not being over-helped, could perform poorly, damaging their social image
Agreement and its Multimodal Communication in Debates: A Qualitative Analysis
The paper defines the notion of agreement from a cognitive point of view and analyses types of agreement signals in TV debates. Agreement is defined as a relation of identity, similarity or congruence between the opinions of two or more persons, by contrasting it with confirmation and admission, and the connected notions of proposal, assessment and opinion are overviewed. Research is then presented on the multimodal signals of agreement in debates from the Canal 9 and the AMI corpora; different ways to express agreement are singled out in extensive discourse, single words and body signals, and analysed through an annotation scheme of multimodal data. Different types of agreement are illustrated, including true, indirect and apparent agreement. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC
Discrediting signals. A model of social evaluation to study discrediting moves in political debates 2012, p.1-16. DOI: 10.1007/s12193-012-0098-4
The paper analyzes the move of discrediting the opponent as a means to persuasion in political debates. After analysis of a corpus of political debates, a typology of discrediting strategies is outlined, distinguished in terms of three criteria: the target—the feature of the opponent specifically attacked (dominance, competence, benevolence); the route through which it is attacked—topic, mode or directly the person; and the type of communicative act that conveys the attack (insult, criticism, correction...)
Acidity. The hidden face of conflictual and stressful situations
The paper overviews the notion of acid com- munication and analyzes its multimodality and its relation with emotions by providing a theoretical framework of it in terms of cognitive of goals and beliefs. Then, a quantita- tive–qualitative study is presented using a lexicographic analysis. A questionnaire was submitted to participants, and its qualitative analysis showed that the idea of acid communication has a psychological reality: subjects can recognize it and provide examples of it; they define it, describe it, and attribute it to specific emotional causes in a consistent manner. Acid communication is a sort of half- inhibited aggression, expressed subtly or indirectly, caused by a mix of emotions like anger, bitterness, revenge, and impotence
Bimodal Casting Process of Eco-Mg Series Alloys by Vertical High-Speed Press Machine
Ultimate advancements in non-flammable magnesium alloys (the so-called Eco-Mg alloys series, acronym of Environment Conscious Magnesium) have been recently achieved. Preliminary laboratory tests have been already confirmed safe window parameters (i.e. exposure time and maximum melting temperature) for processing Eco-Mg AZ91D-1.5CaO alloy in full liquid state. Further project challenge has been now completed; Eco-Mg samples have been realized in special novel pre-industrial vertical 4-column press machine, designed and constructed for processing Eco-Mg series alloys in air by two routes, by high-pressure die casting and by semisolid state injection. An external rotating stirrer finely controlled in temperature, and rotating velocity completes the semisolid process route, allowing Eco-Mg alloy remaining below flame-ignition temperature. Microstructure investigation on samples produced in both high-pressure die casting and semisolid state patterns has been performed. To date, such a bimodal pilot line is thought to introduce affordable industrial way e for producing near-net-shape Mg parts
