This paper examines the several aspects related to the world of perfumes in Greece from 1000 BC till 500 BC: as a powerful weapon of the girl's appeal and gracefulness; as aromatic oil which was used by the athletes for greasing their bodies; as expression of the wealth through which the elites distinguished themselves; as merchandise which gives profits to the traders (the emporoi); as aroma which was burnt on the altar in order to satisfy the gods by the smell; as ointment for the body of the dead before the funeral. Also from the point of view of perfumes Early Archaic and Archaic Greece shows important differences from city to city, from socio-political groups to others. The long period, which is analysed in this paper, shows as well significant transformations in several aspects related to the world of perfume

I cavalieri di Priniàs ed il tempio A

    No full text
The author re-examines the question of the reconstruction of temple A at Prinias, and attempts a cultural analysis of its abundant sculptural decoration, aimed at the understanding of the global conception of the building. He considers the monument, which the frieze with horse-riders imbues with specific political significance, in the context of Cretan aristocratic society in the 7th century BC, and interprets it as the "poliadic" temple of Prinias, thus emphasizing the close relationship between the evolution of the sacred sphere and the formative process of the poli

Ipponatte e Boupalos, e la dialettica tra poesia e scultura in età arcaica

    No full text
Following Viviers' suggestion that the signature of Boupalos appears on the North Frieze of the Siphnian Treasury at Delphi, the author re-examines the career of this famous Ionian sculptor and his family. There are arguments in favour of the literary tradition which attributes to Boupalos a caricature portrait of the poet Hipponax, following the traditions of iambic poetry for symposia. The dispute between Hipponax and Boupalos could in fact reflect a politico-social and cultural dispute in Archaic Ionia, like that between Hipponax and the painter Mimnes. In this dialectic between poetry and art (sculpture and painting) a new reading of a fragment of Hipponax attacking Boupalos is proposed, where the poet defends the superiority of poetry, which is more supple than inert and silent sculptur

Il tempio di Apollo a Dreros: Il culto e la "cucina del sacrificio"

    No full text
This paper deals with the functions of the temple of Apollo Delphinios at Dreros, which was excavated by S. Marinatos during 1935. The temple was established together with its cult statues - the well-known sphyrelata - as early as the end of the 8th century BC. It is still an "hybrid", because it is a very early Greek temple and because of its specific Cretan features. It already assumes the "classical" function as the house of the cult images, but it is still the "enclosure" where the civic sacrifice is performed around the central eschara-hearth

LA LISSÈ PETRE IN OD. III, 293-296, ED I TERRITORI DI GORTINA E DI FESTÒS IN EPOCA ARCAICA

This paper deals with a passage of the Odyssey (3.293-296) and other related sources regarding the Southern coast of Crete between Gortyn and Phaistos. According to the interpretation put forward, the lissèpetre here mentioned corresponds to the Lithinos Cape. It is described as the border between the territories of Gortyn and Phaistos. As other sources show, the lissèpetre is also known as Lissès or Lissèn. It does not correspond to the Maleou - mikròslithos, which is referred to in the same Odyssey passage. The latter cape appears to be the small headland that protects Kommos from the South, and which was the harbour of Phaistos. The territory of Phaistos included the Western Mesara. Starting from the early Archaic period it extended from the Lithinos Cape Northwards, including the earlier harbour of Phaistos-Kommos – and the later one – Matala. The latter only became the harbour of Gortyn after it conquered Phaistos around the middle of the 2nd Century BC.The territory of Gortyn comprised the Eastern Mesara. In the Archaic period it developed from the Lithinos Cape Eastwards. On the coastline the territory of Gortyn included the emporion-harbour of Lebena. This harbour goes back as early as the Iron Age, as a newly identified site shows: it is located behind the headland of Lebena. Along the Southern coast there were other harbours in the territory of Gortyn: Lasaia - KaloiLimenes, and the polis and hormos of Amyklaion, which has yet to be found
