Fitness of the marine parasitic nematode Anisakis simplex s. str. in temperate waters of the NE Atlantic
In temperate waters of the NE Atlantic, third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex sensu stricto collected from 3 paratenic host species were identified by restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The condition of wild larval infrapopulations was assessed by examining morphometric and growth characteristics. The differentiation patterns and the excretory/secretory products of larvae grown in Vitro were also examined. An extensive morphometric, growth and differentiation variability was found between parasite larvae collected from different paratenic host sources. Nematode infrapopulation larvae from the squid comprise those smaller individuals with the lowest values of survival rates and moult success. It may be then concluded that the fitness of A. simplex s. str. larvae is not the best possible in the squid, which impaired the competitiveness of the parasite and its chances of developing into an adult. This suggests that the microenvironments impaired by the paratenic host may provide larval infrapopulations with unique ecological factors probably influencing its recruitment to the final host populations
!e goal of this paper is to reconstruct the process that lead to producing mosaics, in which
glass becomes the preferred component. We also analyse how the work was organised, and the
actual role of the medieval pictor in this process, before mosaicists became simple copyists, as they
were considered in the Modern Age
Acute Hypobaric-Hypoxia Challenge and Salivary Cortisol and DHEA-S in Healthy Male Subjects
PONTREMOLESI S, BISELLI R, CINIGLIO APPIANI G, D'AMELIO R, SIMONA S, PATACCHIOLI FR. Acute hypobaric-hypoxia challenge and salivary cortisol and DHEA-S in healthy male subjects. Aviat Space Environ Med 2012; 83:637-42. Background: Hypobaric hypoxia is a stressful emergency situation that can cause a degradation of the sensory, motor, and higher cognitive functions necessary for safe flight. Methods: We studied the salivary cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) concentrations of 12 healthy male military aviators (AV) exposed to an altitude-induced hypoxia challenge in a hypobaric chamber. A matched control group (C) of eight flight physiology instructors wearing oxygen masks during the challenge was studied. Salivary samples were collected every 2 h on 3 experimental days (the day before, the day of, and the clay after the hypobaric chamber challenge). Results: In the AV group, salivary cortisol concentrations showed a statistically significant increase from 5.42 +/- 0.15 measured at 08:30 to 11.37 +/- 1.86 ng ml(-1) during the hypobaric chamber challenge and a statistically significant increase in DHEA-S was also measured (from 3.15 +/- 0.42 ng . ml(-1) at 08:30 to 5.99 +/- 0.15 ng . ml(-1)). The day after the challenge, the concentrations of both hormones were comparable to those measured the day before; neither C nor AV showed any disturbances of the physiological diurnal fluctuations of cortisol and DHEA-S. No differences were found among the cortisol/DHEA-S ratios measured during the 3 experimental days in the AV group. Discussion: In spite of having experienced a psycho-physical stress, the AVs did not show any dysregulation of the diurnal fluctuations of cortisol and DHEA-S, thus presenting a good level of stress resilience. Data presented in this paper are consistent with recent literature suggesting a stress-buffering role of DHEA-S

Anisakis. From molecular identification to omic studies
Parasitic nematodes of the genus Anisakis are responsible for a fish-borne zoonosis known as anisakiasis,
which is associated with gastrointestinal disturbances and/or allergic reactions in humans after ingestion
of raw or undercooked fish containing Anisakis third-stage larvae. Prevalent in countries where large
quantities of raw fish are consumed (e.g., Japan), anisakiasis is now recognized as an emerging parasitic
disease of considerable economic relevance worldwide. Given their limited morphological variations,
molecular approaches are increasingly relied upon for inferring the systematic and evolutionary relationships
among anisakid nematodes. Recent transcriptomic and proteomic studies on anisakids have helped
uncover new insights on the host–parasite interactions and pathogenic mechanisms, further empowering
allergen-specific characterization of Anisakis spp
Evaluation of environmental deterioration by analysing fish parasite biodiversity and community structure
The paper describes the potential use of parasite community composition as indicator of environmental deterioratio

The architect Franciscus Josephus Smolderen (Antwerp 1889-1973) is the author of the Inter-allied Memorial built on the hill of Cointe (Liege) since 1928. The complex was born as synthesis of a Civil Monument to commemorate the dead in the First World War and a large regional church, centre of pilgrimage consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
A system of‘church-square’ and monuments that bind a high civic tower to a circular church. A complex of reinforced concrete constructions synthesis of an interesting constructive experimentation and a figurative choice between eclectic monumentalism and structural grid.
On this comparison is directed the analysis of the Memorial, whose essence is inseparable from the majestic panorama, once marked by the dark pyramids of the coal mines of the Liège basin. Today, this “symbol of encouragement of a lasting and ennobling peace" has to find a new future that respects the historical, figurative and landscape quality of its architecture and the symbolic value that the whole complex represents
