Pitfalls of Participatory Approaches
Over recent decades, “participation” has become one of the leading mottos of reform-oriented movements in such diverse fields as democracy, technology, finance, management, mass media, culture, social research methodology and, last but not least, social work. Before our eyes the “change of function” (in the terminology of Karl Mannheim) has taken place: what in the sixties and seventies was an incorporation of subversive and alternative tendencies, has been absorbed step by step in mainstream discourses on politics, economy, social science and the helping professions. The discursive dominance of participatory ideas can be manifested when they constitute a prominent message in recent handbooks in the fields mentioned above or provide apparently self-evident justifications in typical applied research projects. This trend needs to be reflected upon if we are not to succumb to the self-destructive potential of participatory approaches
“Poland represented existential experiences of resistance, political experiences and intellectual impact”. Marek Zybura in conversation with Wolfgang Templin, the author of the German biography of Józef Piłsudski
Wolfgang Templin (born in 1948) was active in the democratic resistance in the former GDR. He co‑founded the party Bündnis 90 in reunified Germany and was writer and author of history books. In the conversation with Marek Zybura (born in 1957) —the Chair of History of Literature and Culture of Germany in the Willy Brandt Centre of German and European Studies at the University of Wroclaw—Templin discusses the origins of his Piłsudski biography (2022), which is being published in the Polish translation by Bellona in Warsaw
Opening sentences in Marek Krajewski’s novels
Opening sentences raise a lot of interest of both linguists and common Polish speakers. It is evident from numerous websites in which Internet users share their observations on the best opening sentences of books (most often novels), as well as theoretical papers and writing guides. The analysis of opening sentences of ten novels by Marek Krajewski (co-author of two of them being Mariusz Czubaj) is to provide an answer to the question to what extent the utterance opening of the texts of the Wroc³aw-based prose writer fulfill the requirements to be met by such type of constructions. It turns out that most crucial are syntactic and semantic features rather than lexical ones. The clash between theoretical assumptions and the M. Krajewski’s writing practice shows that opening sentences of his novels not always fall into classical determinants of incipient formulas. It also illustrates the thesis that a skillful writer does not need to cling to theoretical assumptions to create good opening sentences and novels translated into nearly twenty languages
Próba rekonstrukcji zasobów interpretacyjnych sporu o Trybunał Konstytucyjny i kwestia autonomii Trybunału Konstytucyjnego
Czy opozycja musi być bezsilna? Model MAP, polityka sporu, ramowanie i sprawa polska
Chodzi o (a) analizy dotyczące kolejnych faz ruchu społecznego (model MAP); (b) socjologiczno-historyczne, porównawcze studia Charles’a Tilly’ego nad wzorami tzw. polityki sporu (contentious politics); oraz (c) badania nad komunikacyjnymi mechanizmami protestów społecznych (analiza ramowania, framing analysis). Ustalenia te warto rozważyć w odniesieniu do aktualnej sytuacji w Polsce. Wreszcie, rozpatrzenia domaga się kwestia roli przedstawicieli nauk społecznych i humanistycznych w toczącym się sporze politycznym. On both sides of the political debate in Poland, the belief about the helplessness of the opposition
is consolidating. First, independent of its accuracy, I intend to consider causes, roles, and functions of the ubiquitousness of this belief in the public space, irrespective of its validity. Next, assuming the conviction is right, three different areas of scientific knowledge are consulted that might help find answers not only
to the question why the opposition is helpless but also to the question whether the opposition has to be helpless. These areas are: (a) research on the subsequent phases of a social movement (the MAP model); (b) sociologicalhistorical comparative studies of Charles Tilly concerning patterns of contentious politics; and (c) research on communication aspects of social protests (framing analysis). Findings offered by these studies should be considered with regard to the current situation in Poland. Finally, I suggest that the role of representatives of social sciences and humanities in the ongoing political conflict requires closer examination/inspection
