Asahel Curtis letter to Senator James P. Pope regading the large deposits of manganese ore in the Olympic Mountains, January 16, 1937
Curtis' letter to Senator Pope is in response to Pope's proposed bill to provide "unemployment relief through the development of emergency and deficiency minerals". Curtis states, "We have in the Olympic Peninsula and slopes of the Olympic Mountains, very large deposits of manganese ore". He goes on to recount Wallgren's (H.R. 7086) proposed bill to establish the Mount Olympus National Park (Olympic National Park) and how the boundaries of the park would have included the manganese deposits. He states, "The present fad for setting aside vast primitive areas without first investigating their resources should be watched with great care or the western states will soon find themselves deprived of much needed material."Asahel Curtis, prominent Seattle photographer of the early twentieth century, was brother to famed photographer, Edward S. Curtis. Asahel Curtis was a founding member of the Mountaineers, a mountain-climbing group which also promoted the preservation of wilderness areas. Curtis was active in the affairs of the club for the first several years after its founding in 1906. His involvement in the Seattle-Tacoma Rainier National Park Committee (later the Rainier National Park Advisory Board) strained his relations with the Mountaineers. The committee was formed by community business interests to take advantage of the park's tourism potential. Curtis, through the committee, sought to promote greater accessibility to the park by building roads to increase tourism. His opposition to the expansion of the Olympic National Park in the late 1930's as a representative of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the timber industry, led to a further deterioration of relations with the Mountaineers.
The Olympic National Park was first created by President Grover Cleveland in 1897, naming it the Olympic Forest Reserve. In 1909 President Theodore Roosevelt designated the area Mount Olympus National Monument to protect the summer range and breeding grounds of the Olympic elk. In 1915, conceding to the protests and mindful of the increasing need for timber with the advent of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson reduced the Monument by half. On March 28, 1935 Representative Mon C. Wallgren of Washington introduced the first of three bills to establish "Mount Olympus National Park." The proposed bill (H.R. 7086) would have abolished the monument and created an enlarged national park of 728,360 acres. The bill failed. In 1938 Congress signed a bill designating 898,000 acres as Olympic National Park thanks in large part to the enthusiastic support of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Two years later, in 1940, Roosevelt added an additional 300 square miles to the park

MANOVA modelling of a chiropractic longitudinal study using multiple imputation
The purpose of this report is to present the detailed statistical analysis of a randomised, placebo-controlled trial comparing two different treatment modalities to an intervention of no known benefit for people with acute or subacute thoracic spine pain.
The therapy arms consist of Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) and Graston Technique (GT) and the placebo is a non-functional ultrasound. A placebo group was utilised because at present there are no proven treatments for non-specific thoracic pain. This trial is registered with the Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry. Ethics approval has been granted by Murdoch University Human Research and Ethics Committee, number 2007/274.
The aim of this three arm trial was to test the efficacy of SMT and GT as independent modalities compared to detuned ultrasound for the outcomes of pain and disability. The latter were measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and a modified Oswestry Back Pain Disability Index. The study was conducted at the Murdoch University Chiropractic student clinic in Perth, Australia, and the protocol published in Crothers et al (2008).
In this report, Section 2 provides an initial exploratory analysis of the data, Section 3 outlines the statistical models used in the final analysis, Section 4 defines these models in mathematical terms, Section 5 discusses the management of missing values via multiple imputation and Section 6 presents the results of the statistical modelling and hypothesis tests. The clinical study will be published in full elsewhere
