Letter from M.J. Curran to Hagan

    No full text
Holograph letter from M.[J. Curran], (Hotel) Subasio, Assisi, to Hagan, with further news on Fr. Augustine's convalescence; he might return with Curran on Monday. Hoping the pilgrimage runs smoothly; seeing the C.[...] Association so early must be a bad sign but Hagan steers counter any possible friction by the stance he takes. He had hoped 'the quondam admirer of Ireland's army (and) navy was not coming'. The Dean of A.[...] probably did not ask about rooms again. Informing him that the Tivoli Franciscans seek subscriptions towards a new bell; recommending giving their scholarly 'commendatore' a good sum. Then describing the Regional Seminary built by their own architect, Momo, only occupied for the last six months: liking the feature of an organ gallery in the chapel, but Hagan's idea of a partition rules this out

Holograph letter from C. Roberts, St. Patrick’s College, Manly, New South Wales (Australia), to Curran. He still has no fixed address. Bishop Liston enquired about the College's centenary when they met; he as well as 'a bevy of bishops' from Australia went to Chicago including Monsignor Hayden, their president. Reference to their lecturing staff; he himself has dogma 'with Discipline thrown in- "Che bellezza!"'. Asking for the Irish College rules and prospectus

Holograph letter from M.J. Curran, Rome, to Hagan. Discussing a matter involving Reali and L.[ucidi] regarding property sales tax. There will be no consistory until October, but C[erretti] will be elevated at a semi-public consistory. On finding more students, he will write to Mungret; the Christian Brothers in Dublin are very helpful; Cork city schools are looking out also. Matters concerning students P. Walsh and Lee. Hagan ought to ask Cashel (Archbishop Harty) to speak to McCormick about giving a concert, maybe without mentioning the object. Informing him that the rector of the Bohemian College died; suspecting a 'broken heart' from being member of the Fondo del Clero committee

Holograph letter from M.J. C.[urran], 211 (North Circular) Road (Dublin), to Hagan, having received letters and report. He saw young Gallen who is better and wants to return to Rome. Then commenting favourably on the Bank's offer of the property of Villa Colonna; although not well served by transport now it will be if and when the railway station at S. Maria Maggiore is built. Then observing that the Titular's 'incursion is certainly cool' since he has no shadow of a claim. Comments on the wall to be built in Tivoli. Promising to haul Conn [Murphy] over the coals for the Good affair. The archbishop was very attentive but looked worn. He will go to Bobbio but will not get involved in the organisation. The archbishop knew well of the Irish College's position in the Luzio question but did not think it requisite to read a repudiation by Curran at the Standing Committee. Curran believes that the bishops who do not know the situation will probably believe what political prejudices dictate anyhow. He will do his best to see where the report originated. Enclosing cutting from the Independent of 19 April with the [Despard]-Gasparri telegram (not extant). If the latter was in fact a forgery, as implied by the government, wondering who sent it; Borgongini ought to investigate. Expecting to return to Rome by 9 July; relieving Hagan of 'our friend the bishop' on 11 July

Holograph letter from M. J. C.[urran], 15 Garville Avenue, Rathgar (Dublin), to Hagan. He has seen 'Attalea' (O'Donnell) who is of the same opinion as Dublin, advising the archbishop's letter to Sbarretti be used as justification for not signing any document for the time being. Believing that either would go to the extreme of not sending any more students on account of actions by Bisleti or the Holy See. Explaining his understanding of the motivation behind the withdrawal of the half million from the 'premio'; however, it is now accepted Vatican practice to have property vested in non-Italians. Both archbishops are hopeful that Sbarretti's sense of justice will win through. Curran put the point strongly that Italian possession would mean disaster for the Irish College. Expecting to argue the same in Tuam. Brief remarks about local appointments. In Leinster the crops are good, but the potatoes threatened in the west

Holograph letter from M.J. Curran, Holy Cross College, Clonliffe, Dublin, to Hagan, enclosing his letter which arrived damaged (letter of c. 24 January). Some more comments on the process leading to his appointment as vice-rector. Much of his congratulatory mail is really a tribute to Hagan some arrives 'from "somewhere in Ireland" the modern e loco refugii nostri'. The Labour people left much wiser men than they came; McPherson may well have left for good and French 'will follow as soon as they can find a place for that brilliant statesman'soldier'. Lord Northcliffe is meeting Dominion Home Rulers like James O'Connor, Sir Jackie O'Connell LL.D., but they will not do any harm in Ireland. (Archbishop Walsh) is taking on far too much in his opinion, including the confirmations at the Pro-Cathedral; Dr. Donnelly is 'rapidly failing'. Brief news of parish changes; of the work for Progress 1 preferring not to be vice-postulator but stay notarius
