NEW MEDIA IN TRADE SHOWS Support tools or dominant solutions for the future?

    No full text
Systematically defined in 1986, Trade Shows (TSs) still represent today a leading business and development instrument for the global and European economy. However, over the years, TSs have acquired new functions and new roles. This evolution also happened in light of the major socio-economic changes of the new millennium. In particular, the XX and XXI centuries brought with them important socio-economic changes, thus forcing trade shows to deal with the effect of the globalization phenomenon, the consequences of the 2008 crisis, and the advent of the new media. Faced with this background, the aim of the present book is to gain a deeper understanding of the adoption and use of the new media in the TSs context. In particular, the work intends to reach the following objectives: (i) analysis of the thirty-year evolution (1988-2018) of the trade show literature; (ii) identification of the main trends emerging from the more recent literature (2010-2018); (iii) exploration of the impact of new media (i.e., social media and virtual tools) in the trade show sector, especially from the organizers’ perspective. Notably, the focus on the organizer’s category represents an attempt to fill a specific research gap, emerged from the analysis of the existing TS literature, concerning the scant attention towards this stakeholders’ target

Ad essi si aggiunge un titulus pictus su un’anfora Dressel 7–11 che menziona la mur(ia) hisp(ana).Between 2006 and 2008 the Soprintendenza Archeologia, belle arti e paesaggio per la città metropolitana di Bologna e per le province di MO, RE, FE carried out an excavation in the courtyard of Palazzo Legnani Pizzardi, which in Roman times was located in the first southern suburb of Bononia. As for the Roman period, a big hollow has been found, which probably belonged to the original defence system of the colony; afterwards, perhaps since the Augustan age, the hollow was filled with both ceramics and materials derived from the demolition of upmarket buildings. In particular, a considerable amount of amphorae has been found, 25 of them bearing stamps: one on Lamboglia 2, eight on Dressel 2–4, nine on Dressel 6A and seven on Dressel 6B amphorae. All these containers were produced in the Adriatic area, mainly in its northern part, and are mainly dated from the Augustan age to the Early Imperial age. In addition to that, a Dressel 7–11 amphora has been found, which bears a poorly preserved painted inscription mentioning the mur(ia) hisp(ana)

Global vs. Local: A Quantitative Study of Factors Influencing Italian Consumers’ Preference in the Purchase of Food Products

    No full text
Purpose: The study intends to expand the current literature on Italian consumers’ brand preferences between local vs. global alternatives in the specific Italian food sector. Design/methodology/approach: This study draws on concepts largely investigated like cultural identity theory, consumer ethnocentrism, and product category involvement to examine the mechanisms that drive Italian consumers to prefer alternative local or global brands in the food sector. A non-hierarchical cluster analysis represents the core part of the quantitative research that involved 412 participants. Findings: By confirming the validity of existing studies, the present paper contributes to the food consumption literature by testing a conceptual model that integrates previous research concepts, thus deepening the analysis of the factors affecting Italian consumers’ food brand preferences. The cluster analysis allowed for dividing Italian consumers into two distinguished groups with characteristics coherent inside the same group. Research limitations/implications: This study emphasizes the key relevance of the investigated variables in the implementation of positioning and communication strategies aimed at meeting the needs of specific markets in which firms operate, and it highlights the importance of analyzing those variables together. The sample composed of Italian consumers did not allow the generalizability of the results. Furthermore, this study focuses on the narrow category of chocolate bar products. Therefore, this does not permit the results to be generalized to other food products. Originality/value: The novel research is based on signaling theory that contributes to the local and global branding domains from the Italian perspective. This work is also the first to analyze the food sector and the importance that Italians attribute to their food products and traditions through a cluster analysis approach

Trade shows and new media presence: The TS organizers’ perspective

Based on the complexity and the multiple facets characterizing the phenomenon of trade shows (TSs), the starting objective of the present dissertation is to identify, through a descriptive and analytical review process, the subject areas most dealt with by the papers published during the last twenty years (1997-2017) and focused on the TS topic and to outline the main trends emerging from the recent (2010-2017) TS literature. In a second phase of the work, two of the four trends, identified by the review process, have been specifically deepened from the organizers’ perspective. The focus on the TS organizers’ category represents an attempt to fill a specific research gap, which emerged from the review, concerning the scant attention of the TS literature towards this stakeholders’ target. The TSO perspective has been then adopted (through the use of in-depth interviews directed to 38 European trade show organizers) with a view to analyzing the implementation of the social media tools in the TS context and the reaction to the virtual trade shows’ (VTSs) advent, by enriching in this way the literature studies focused on the “TSs and new media” and “Virtual TSs” trends. The results of this dissertation make different contributions to TS literature (systematization of all the business and management articles, devoted to the trade show studies published between 1997 and 2017, analysis of the evolution of the TS literature of the last twenty years, classification of the areas of study most enhanced by the selected papers, identification of the main trends and the most studied TS stakeholders’ perspectives emerging from the recent TS literature and construction of a possible framework of synthesis) and to business management (elaboration of an index for the evaluation of the social media popularity of the TS activities, identification of the main challenges for exhibition managers who want to adopt social media in their communicative strategies, identification of the need to develop a social media strategic orientation in synergy with the realization of other specific actions, whose managerial importance emerged from the specialized literature). The limitations, characterizing this dissertation, provide avenues for future researches. More specifically, the present work paves the way for investigating the use of social media in the trade show sector further, by investigating for example the effect of SM usage for pre-show, at-show and post-show promotion on the achievement of sales objectives set for a trade show. Future research could also analyze the effect of SM usage in trade shows on the achievement of non-sales performance objectives, such as information gathering, exhibition image building, relationship improvement and achievement of contacts. For what concerns the other trends characterizing the TS context (relationship marketing, internationalization process and experiential marketing) from the dissertation emerges, on one side, the necessity to be skilled on each of them in order to remain competitive in the contemporary and foreseeable trade show scenario and, on the other, the awareness that the competitiveness of the TS sector is based on an integrate adoption of these trends and actions. Starting from this assumption, in the future, it could be interesting to investigate the relational, experiential and internationalization trends from the Italian TS organizers’ perspective, as well as in comparison with the rest of Europe, in order to identify the highest performing strategic trends and those that instead need managerial improvement

Global Start-ups and Born global Spin-offs: A Multiple Case study

    No full text
The paper aims to identify and analyze the major critical success factors at the base of the rapid internationalization of three different types of Born Global (BG) firms, namely start-up, academic spin-off and company spin-off. Based on a case study analysis, the findings show that the entrepreneurs’ dynamic capabilities, their passion and propensity to take risks, previous international experiences, language skills, the presence of an experienced staff, the ability to nurture relationships and networks based on mutual trust and on the transfer of know-how represent the major key factors for internationalization. This study intends to strengthen the literature focused on the BG phenomenon. However, the empirical analysis was conducted on an exiguous number of enterprises, operating in the high-tech sectors and founded few years ago. In order to obtain more generalizable results, future research should also focus on companies active in the low-tech sectors and founded in less recent years

DISSECTION OF THE MECHANISMS CONTROLLING HIGH CONSTITUTIVE ACTIVITY OF HOUSEKEEPING AND TISSUE-SPECIFIC CIS-REGULATORY ELEMENTS

    No full text
The genetic information is identical within the organism but the mechanisms by which different cell types achieve specialized functions interpreting the same set of instructions is not completely understood. It is now increasingly accepted that the combination of different genomic elements, both promoters and enhancers, favors the recruitment of different TFs, which in turn promotes the assembly of different pre-initiation complexes, guaranteeing heterogeneity in transcriptional outputs across different tissues. Nevertheless, the cis-regulatory elements and the transcriptional rules that control and maintain the expression of constitutively active genes are still poorly characterized. Specifically, whether the constitutive activity of promoters and enhancers relies on entirely distinct or instead shared regulators is unknown. By dissecting the cis-regulatory repertoire of macrophages, we found that the ELF subfamily of ETS proteins selectively bound within 60 bp from the transcription start sites of highly active housekeeping genes. ELFs also bound constitutively active, but not poised macrophage-specific enhancers and promoters. The role of ELFs in promoting constitutive transcription is suggested by multiple evidences: ELF sites enabled transcriptional activation by endogenous and minimal synthetic promoters; ELF recruitment was stabilized by the transcriptional machinery, and ELF proteins mediated recruitment of transcriptional and chromatin regulators to core promoters. These data indicate that a distinct subfamily of ETS proteins imparts high transcriptional activity to a broad range of housekeeping and tissue-specific cis-regulatory elements, which is consistent with the role of an ETS family ancestor in core promoter regulation in a lower eukaryote

Fundação Oswaldo Cruz. Instituto Oswaldo Cruz. Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease, which results from an exacerbated immune response against common antigens. The anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic therapy includes the use of drugs that cause significant side effects or are not effective under specific conditions, justifying the search for novel, safe and effective drugs. Curine is an alkaloid that acts as an inhibitor of calcium influx, but its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, as well as the toxic effects resulting from its administration in vivo remain to be elucidated. This study aims to characterize the anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties of curine as well as investigate the toxicity induced by the oral treatment with this alkaloid. Using an experimental model of asthma, we have demonstrated that orally administered curine significantly inhibited the recruitment and activation of eosinophils and AHR in mice challenged with OVA, besides reducing the production of eotaxin and IL-13. Verapamil, a calcium channel antagonist, showed similar anti-allergic properties and the pre-treatment with curine inhibited the calcium-induced tracheal contractile response ex-vivo, suggesting that the mechanism by which curine exerts its effects is through the inhibition of a calcium-dependent response. The toxicological evaluation showed that curine administered orally for 7 days did not induce significant toxicity. The evaluation of the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of curine demonstrated that it inhibited paw edema formation and vascular permeability, inhibited nociceptive responses in the inflammatory phase, but not in neurogenic phase, and inhibited carrageenan induced hyperalgesia In addition, curina inhibited PGE2 production in vitro, without affecting the expression of COX-2 in macrophages stimulated with LPS. The effects of the treatment with curine were similar to the effects of indomethacin, but different from the effects of morphine treatment, suggesting that the analgesic effect of curine does not result from direct inhibition of neuronal activation, but instead, relies on anti-inflammatory mechanisms which at least in part, result from inhibition of PGE2 production. Using a model of LPS-induced pleurisy, we demonstrated that the oral treatment with curine significantly inhibited the recruitment of neutrophils into the pleural lavage, associated with inhibition of cytokine and leukotriene B4 production in the pleural lavage. Also, curine inhibited the production of TNF-\03B1, IL- 1\03B2, IL -6 and NO by macrophages stimulated with LPS in vitro, and verapamil had similar inhibitory effects ,suggesting that the inhibitory effects that curine exerts on macrophage activation may be associated with the inhibition of calcium influx. In conclusion, curine the presented anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in the absence of significant toxicity, which are associated with the inhibition of leukocyte activation and production of inflammatory mediators, whose mechanisms involve inhibition of a calcium-dependent response and as such, has the potential for drug developmen

In the recent excavation survey published on the medieval Jewish necropolis in via Orfeo, Bologna, there is no discussion of the coins and token that had been found. This contribution addresses the omission by highlighting the deducing data as well as the critical issues that can be encountered in this type of study. After laying out the excavation’s framework, the article turns its attention to the recovered coins and token, considering them in the stratigraphies in which they were found and in their broader historical contexts

Unlocking destination cultural reputation: the role of sustainable on-site activity involvement as moderator

    No full text
Purpose – The study aims to provide a detailed definition of Destination Cultural Reputation while also exploring its impact on tourist satisfaction through an investigation of the dynamics between these two elements. Additionally, the potential moderating role of on-site engagement in sustainable activities has been investigated, examining whether satisfaction prompts tourists to exhibit behaviors such as the intention to return and recommend the cultural destination. Design/methodology/approach – To achieve these objectives, a survey and a structural equation model, based on a sample of 647 visitors to an important UNESCO World Heritage site (i.e. Urbino), have been adopted. Findings – Findings confirm tourists’ recognition of the destination’s cultural reputation, supporting its relationship with visitor satisfaction. Additionally, tourist satisfaction is positively associated with destination loyalty. However, on-site sustainable activities negatively moderate the relationship between destination reputation and tourist satisfaction. This suggests that a favorable cultural reputation should align with quality sustainable activities in the destination to prevent tourist dissatisfaction. Practical implications – The paper offers valuable practical insights for destination managers and policymakers aiming to enhance appeal and sustainability. Originality/value – The study contributes to enhancing the understanding of the complex relationship between reputation, satisfaction, and loyalty in cultural destinations. In addiction it measures the reputation of tourist destination through the specific cultural dimension
