Tuning and chirping fiber Bragg gratings by deep etching
We have demonstrated a new method for tuning and chirping fiber gratings. It relies on etching of a fiber down to very small cladding diameter, so that the propagating optical mode in the fiber interacts with the surrounding media. A tuning range of 4.5 nm has been demonstrated with a potential of much larger tuning range by optimization of fibers. Chirped gratings were also demonstrated with this technique. These chirped gratings are very important for use in fiber dispersion compensation and optical pulse shaping
Long period gratings formed in depressed cladding fibres
In a single mode fibre of a depressed cladding design, the LP11 mode is leaky but can propagate over a short length of fibre. This leaky LP11 mode instead of the conventional cladding modes can be used in long period gratings, with two extra benefits, I) a larger overlap, giving stronger coupling and II) coupling is insensitive to the glass-air interface therefore packaging is easier
FONI-SPATE: a new fibre optic stress/strain sensor, using a near-infrared variant of the SPATE effect
A new fibre optic stress/strain sensor, for monitoring hot materials is reported. The fibre collects grey body emission from a heated material sample. When the sample is subjected to transient stresses, the radiation is modulated due to the adiabatic changes in its temperature. The modulation is monitored, via a silica fibre, using a near-infrared GaInAs photodetector. This is also believed to be the first demonstration of the SPATE method in the near infrared
Improved thermal sensitivity of fiber Bragg gratings using a polymer overlayer
Fibre Bragg gratings have been shown to have a much improved thermal sensitivity when using polymer materials with large thermal expansion coefficients as driving elements. The polymers are fixed to the fibres at an elevated temperature and the fibres are under compression instead of tension at the lower temperatures subsequently used. This allows a much wider tuning range of the Bragg gratings as silica can stand much more compression than tension. A sensitivity of 0.15nm/°C in the 1550nm wavelength regime has been achieved and the Bragg wavelength has been tuned 15nm in the temperature range 0-100°C

Novel in-line fiber-optic filters and polarisers
Novel in-line devices, based on a tapered fiber whose uniform waist has been metal-coated, are reported. The resonant excitation of a surface plasma mode of the metal film allows for the design of wavelength filters and polarisers
