Oral history interview with Jonathan Crowley, Class of 2007. The interview was conducted by Milner Library intern Paige Malloy on June 12, 2023. Crowley, who grew up in Mahomet, Illinois, had a childhood characterized by a love of reading and involvement in community theater. Their high school years were marked by active participation in theater, music, and various extracurricular activities, which influenced their decision to attend ISU. Upon arriving at the university, they were struck by the beauty of the campus, having previously visited for theater and music festivals. Initially a theater major, Crowley switched to communication studies, focusing on interpersonal communication, which aligned with their interests in leadership and fostering human connections. They also minored in women and gender studies, which related to their queer identity. Crowley fondly recalled their time in these departments, especially their relationships with faculty members like Alison Bailey and Jodi Hallsten Lyczak. Crowley’s involvement with PRIDE at ISU was pivotal. Serving as vice president and president, they dedicated significant time to the organization, which provided them with a strong sense of community and fostered connections with other student groups. Key events organized by PRIDE included the Annual PRIDE Drag Show and the Day of Silence, which were aimed at raising awareness of LGBT issues and fostering inclusivity. The Day of Silence was particularly impactful, symbolizing the silencing of LGBT voices and culminating in a powerful “breaking the silence” event. Crowley also participated in National Coming Out Day and PRIDE’s Speaker’s Bureau, which involved sharing personal stories in classrooms to build understanding about LGBT issues. During their time at ISU, Crowley was deeply involved in numerous activities and causes, including the fight for the legalization of same-sex marriage. They also partnered with the McLean County AIDS Task Force to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and were active in promoting sexual health through the G Spot. Crowley was also engaged with the Feminist-Led Activist Movement to Empower (FLAME), advocating for women’s rights and bodily autonomy. Reflecting on their involvement, Crowley noted that many of the issues they worked on remain relevant today. Their participation extended to the University Hearing Panel, where they dealt with cases of plagiarism and other violations, sparking their interest in the law. Despite switching majors, Crowley also remained connected to the Theater Department by managing stage productions and joining the Illinois State Dance Theatre. They highlighted the influence of their stage management advisor, Deb Alley, whose mentorship was pivotal during their formative years. After graduating, Crowley experienced a period of drift and burnout before rediscovering their passion for activism through law school and supporting organizations like Lambda Legal and the Human Rights Campaign. They emphasized the importance of staying engaged and not fearing failure, which helped them reenergize and pursue new opportunities. Crowley expressed gratitude for their experiences at ISU, which provided a strong foundation for their continued activism and involvement. Reflecting on their undergraduate years, they were most proud of their contributions to PRIDE, citing the lasting impact of the organization’s work and the relationships they formed.https://ir.library.illinoisstate.edu/aoh/1064/thumbnail.jp

Ibat obscurus : Benveniste's journey by Jean-Claude Milner

This paper proposes a discussion of one of the chapters of the book Le périple structural - Figures et paradigme, published in 2008, by Jean-Claude Milner. It is the text “Benveniste II - Ibat obscurus”, in which the author presents a very particular interpretation of Benveniste's thought. Through a combination of biographical data and the linguist's reasoning, Milner identifies aspects relating to two topics – the Jewish issue, on the one hand, and politics, on the other – not commonly pointed out in his reflection. That is, Milner’s viewpoint involves a methodological perspective that enables theoretical prospecting, the development of new/other interpretations of the linguist's thinking. This study aims to discuss this perspective. To do so, it initially presents the way Milner conceives and organizes his journey. It also discusses the chapter in question more specifically, highlighting the combination established by Milner. Finally, it presents some considerations about this reflection

    A Computer-Checked Verification of Milner's Scheduler

We present an equational verification of Milner's scheduler, which we checked by computer. To our knowledge this is the first time that the scheduler is proof-checked for a general number n of scheduled processes. Note I: a shorter version of this paper will appear in the Proceedings of TACS'94 (international symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Software, April 1994, Japan), published in LNCS. Note II: the work of the first author took place in the context of EC Basic Research Action 7166 concur 2. The work of the second author is supported by the Netherlands Computer Science Research Foundation (SION) with financial support of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). 1 Introduction The correctness of many protocols crucially depends on the characteristics of data; one can think of the use of natural numbers, modulo calculations, lists, etc. Illustrative examples of such protocols are Milner's Scheduler [16], the Bakery Protocol [9] and the Sliding Window ..

A (Co)algebraic Approach to Hennessy-Milner Theorems for Weakly Expressive Logics

Coalgebraic modal logic, as in [9, 6], is a framework in which modal logics for specifying coalgebras can be developed parametric in the signature of the modal language and the coalgebra type functor T. Given a base logic (usually classical propositional logic), modalities are interpreted via so-called predicate liftings for the functor T. These are natural transformations that turn a predicate over the state space X into a predicate over TX. Given that T-coalgebras come with general notions of T-bisimilarity [11] and behavioral equivalence [7], coalgebraic modal logics are designed to respect those. In particular, if two states are behaviourally equivalent then they satisfy the same formulas. If the converse holds, then the logic is said to be expressive. and we have a generalisation of the classic Hennessy-Milner theorem [5] which states that over the class of image-fjnite Kripke models, two states are Kripke bisimilar if and only if they satisfy the same formulas in Hennessy-Milner logic

Marion Milner e a clínica da criatividade: estilo, ética e técnica

    No full text
Finalmente são apresentadas as questões da ética e técnica psicanalíticas, isto é, a posição da autora em relação ao enquadre analítico, sua instalação e sustentação, a função analítica e suas eventuais modificaçõesAroused by the interest of studying the role of the arts in everyday life and in the therapeutic space and to deepen the study of creativity in these two fields, the objective of this research is to present the ideas and insights of the British psychoanalyst and artist Marion Milner about psychic phenomena, the therapeutic process and how they greatly expanded the scope of creativity in psychoanalysis. The study demonstrates how her work emphasizes the role of creativity and aesthetic experience in favoring the psychic growth, both the patient and the analyst, and as the psychoanalytic encounter is seen in terms of aesthetic value. The research consists of a historiographical hermeneutical study of the works of Marion Milner, through a reading that seeks to contextualize her thought on the history of psychoanalysis and a certain "school" to which she belonged in attempt to reveal the development of the of the author s thinking, since the previous moments to her psychoanalytic training until it full development. At specific times, a deconstructive reading, problematizing and interpreting is made for understanding internal strains contained in the author s thinking. The dissertation starts with a brief biography of Marion Milner and her four autobiographies, illustrating the intense research on her own subjective experience and it s influence in all the route of her career. It also presents the theory of creativity proposed by the author starting from William Blake s illustrations to the book of Job followed by the great clinical case that highlighted her as a psychoanalyst, in which is possible to follow the conditions for the emergence of creativity, also bringing a deep reflection on the fundamental problems of the constitution of the human psyche. Finally it presents the issues of ethics and psychoanalytic technique, namely the author's position regarding the analytical setting, its installation and sustain; the analytic function and possibles adjustmentsConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológic

The intervention and assistance to the chronically mentally ill who are experiencing homelessness, 2006

The writing of this dissertation was an effort to address the issue of providing assistance to those persons who have been diagnosed with a chronic mental illness and were also experiencing homelessness. The author addresses several questions surrounding this issue. Ultimately, it was the desire of this writer to develop a Safe Haven program for this population that would create a residential service center. At this writing, there is not such a program in the State of Georgia. Among the many questions surrounding this issue that this writer addressed was: What is the history behind this problem? How did so many people in this targeted population become homeless? Is there a possible solution? What does the bible have to say regarding this issue and what if anything can the Faith community do to intervene and render assistance to this population? The questions were challenging. The intent of this dissertation was to provide some answers and design a program that could be replicated by any congregation that believed they were called to such a mission. The project consisted often men who were homeless and had a diagnosis of achronic mental illness. The period of time these men were observed was a minimum of six months. The staff consisted of a director of counseling who is a licensed master of social work degree holder who specialized in psychotherapy; there were case managers; peer specialist; residential support staff; night managers and a dietician. The program was designed to include volunteerism from the members of the sponsoring congregation. Funding was sought through the support of the sponsoring church as well as other churches and individuals. The bulk of the funding however was provided by government sources. The overall hypothesis was that if given adequate support and assistance, those persons targeted by this effort could become stabilized, non-symptomatic and able to live in permanent housing with the necessary supportive service
