Recruiting Hard-to-Reach Populations: The Utility of Facebook for Recruiting Qualitative In-Depth Interviewees
We present a cost efficient methodology for using social media to recruit a low-incidence, hard-to-reach population. For qualitative research investigating the policy implications of divorce later in life, we were challenged to recruit a pool of qualified respondents from which to secure 80 in-depth interview subjects of geographic diversity divided evenly by sex. Although “gray divorce” (i.e., divorce at or over 50 years old) is increasingly common—approximately one in four of all divorces in the United States now occurs within this age group—the incidence rate of individuals in the general population meeting these criteria still renders traditional recruitment methods cost-prohibitive. With limited resources and the need for micro-targeting, we turned to Facebook: Over four waves totaling 13 days, we recruited 178 qualified respondents from which we successfully selected 40 male and 40 female interviewees while preserving geographic diversity. We specified the characteristics of Facebook users who would be exposed to our solicitation; overall, we generated the respondent pool at a mean cost of 210.04. Compared to other recruitment approaches, the speed and cost-efficiency of this methodology was overwhelmingly superior.Peer reviewe

Aleister Crowley and the Black Magic Story
Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), the wickedest man in the world, the Great Beast 666, was the foremost magician of the twentieth century. Exactly what that means, however, is not immediately clear, for it depends on a complicated set of beliefs and disbeliefs that vary widely between individuals within Western cultures. Magic no longer holds the official or legal weight it once did, but there remain substantial numbers of readers who believe in any number of unofficial ideas, including various occult powers. The issue is particularly vexed in relation to Crowley, who sought publicity while making any number of contrary, obfuscating moves, that there is a sense that he did not want to be seen, at least not straight on. He certainly spent enough time mastering the art of invisibility. In his ‘autohagiography’, he writes of his success in this endeavour
Qualitative Descriptions of Middle-Class, African American Mothers’ Child Rearing Practices and Values
During qualitative phone interviews, middle-class, mostly married African American mothers (N= 25) describe their child rearing responsibilities, practices, and values. They explain: (1) why they decided to stay home or take work leave to attend to child rearing, (b) how they divided child rearing responsibilities with their husbands/romantic partners, (c) whether they faced unique parenting challenges raising African American children, and (d) whether they identified as feminists. Responses revealed the decision to stay home or take work leave comprised values about gender roles, concerns about the cost and/or quality of child care, and the availability of family-friendly workplace policies. Most couples shared child rearing responsibilities, although mothers admit to doing more. Their unique parenting challenge was protecting their children from racism, stereotyping, and discrimination. Only one-third of the mothers identified as being feminists. These results have implications for furthering our knowledge about African American co-parenting from a positive, strength-based perspective.Peer reviewe
An Analysis of the Prose Style of John Steinbeck
Efforts to establish a base for making valid generalizations about prose style must begin -with the printed page. Me freely assign descriptive adjectives to the writing of any author of whom we are knowledgeable, but such subjectivity only compounds our ignorance. Every analysis of prose style must attempt to objectively answer the question, "How did the author achieve this style?" | In our time we witness increasing manifestations of a scientific approach to our every act. Each year the possibility of avoiding this Scientific Age recedes further. This situation enables—perhaps tempts is a better term—us to apply scientific principles, if not the machinery, to problems inherent in the study of literature. Whether we use computers or pencils, this temptation to delve into the methods of writers comes largely from the environment we all share. The question now has become, "Precisely what statistics can we produce to substantiate our statements about a writer’s style?”ProQuest Traditional Publishing Optio
