    Software meta-language engineering and CBS

    The SLE conference series is devoted to the engineering principles of software languages: their design, their implementation, and their evolution. This paper is about the role of language specification in SLE. A precise specification of a software language needs to be written in a formal meta-language, and it needs to co-evolve with the specified language. Moreover, different software languages often have features in common, which should provide opportunities for reuse of parts of language specifications. Support for co-evolution and reuse in a meta-language requires careful engineering of its design.The author has been involved in the development of several meta-languages for semantic specification, including action semantics and modular variants of structural operational semantics (MSOS, I-MSOS). This led to the PLanCompS project, and to the design of its meta-language, CBS, for component-based semantics. CBS comes together with an extensible library of reusable components called ‘funcons’, corresponding to fundamental programming constructs. The main aim of CBS is to optimise co-evolution and reuse of specifications during language development, and to make specification of language semantics almost as straightforward as context-free syntax specification.The paper discusses the engineering of a selection of previous meta-languages, assessing how well they support co-evolution and reuse. It then gives an introduction to CBS, and illustrates significant features. It also considers whether other current meta-languages might also be used to define an extensible library of funcons for use in component-based semantics

    Using Spoofax to Support Online Code Navigation

    Spoofax is a language workbench. A Spoofax language specification generally includes name resolution: the analysis of bindings between definitions and references. When browsing code in the specified language using Spoofax, the bindings appear as hyperlinks, supporting precise name-based code navigation. However, Spoofax cannot be used for browsing code in online repositories. This paper is about a toolchain that uses Spoofax to generate hyperlinked twins of code repositories. These generated artefacts support the same precise code navigation as Spoofax, and can be browsed online. The technique has been prototyped on the CBS (Component-Based Semantics) specification language developed by the PLanCompS project, but could be used on any language after specifying its name resolution in Spoofax.Programming Language

    Thirteen years of antibiotic susceptibility surveillance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from intensive care units and urology services in the Netherlands

    The purpose of this study was the evaluation of trends in the antimicrobial resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from intensive care unit (ICU) patients and urology patients in the Netherlands. From 1998 to 2010, 1,927 consecutive P. aeruginosa isolates from ICU (n = 1,393) and urology service patients (n = 534) of 14 university and referral hospitals all over the Netherlands were collected and their susceptibility to relevant antibiotics was determined according to the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines. Over time, a significant upward trend in the resistance of P. aeruginosa strains collected from ICUs to piperacillin (1.2 % to 10.6 %, p = 0.0175), piperacillin-tazobactam (1.2 % to 12.1 %, p = 0.0008), ceftazidime (1.2 % to 7.8 %, p = 0.0064), cefepime (4.8 % to 6.4 %, p = 0.0166), imipenem (6 % to 19.1 %, p < 0.0001), meropenem (8.3 % to 17 %, p = 0.0022) and ciprofloxacin (13.1 % to 31.2 %, p = 0.0024) was observed, as was the prevalence of multi-resistance (1.2 % to 8.5 %, p = 0.0002). For P. aeruginosa isolates from the urology services, the resistance to imipenem increased (4.1 % to 7.8 %, p = 0.0006) and to ciprofloxacin it decreased (22.4 % to 18.8 %, p = 0.025). Like in other countries, in the Netherlands, an increase in multi-resistant Gram-negatives is observed, suggesting the presence and dissemination of several mechanisms of resistance. Our findings emphasise the importance of local surveillance for the setting up of local antibiotic guidelines and to support optimal empiric therapy. With the observed increase in multi-resistance, the direct testing of alternative antibiotics like polymyxins and fosfomycin is essential.     Entropy concentration and the empirical coding game

    We give a characterization of maximum entropy/minimum relative entropy inference by providing two 'strong entropy concentration' theorems. These theorems unify and generalize Jaynes''concentration phenomenon' and Van Campenhout and Cover's 'conditional limit theorem'. The theorems characterize exactly in what sense a prior distribution "Q" conditioned on a given constraint and the distribution  minimizing "D(P" | "Q") over all "P" satisfying the constraint are 'close' to each other. We then apply our theorems to establish the relationship between entropy concentration and a game-theoretic characterization of maximum entropy inference of Topsøe and others.     Systems immunology of human malaria

    Plasmodium falciparum malaria remains a global public health threat. Optimism that a highly effective malaria vaccine can be developed stems in part from the observation that humans can acquire immunity to malaria through experimental and natural P. falciparum infection. Recent advances in systems immunology could accelerate efforts to unravel the mechanisms of acquired immunity to malaria. Here, we review the tools of systems immunology, their current limitations in the context of human malaria research, and the human &apos;models&apos; of malaria immunity to which these tools can be applied. This unique combination of functions suggests that these cells could provide a potentially unlimited source of differentiated cells for the treatment of disease and aging. Understanding the molecular processes that underpin these functions in ES cells will allow us to harness their potential and develop strategies that control their differentiation. Combination of controlled differentiation with ground-breaking technologies for the reversal of somatic cells to an ES cell-like state promise the generation of patient-derived pluripotent cell lines for the treatment of disease in the future.B.V.
