    An electrochemical cell that receives an inlet stream of air and produces an outlet stream of a high oxygen concentration of gas. The cell is made up of a plurality of layers and preferably a porous electrolyte comprised of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) that allows only oxygen ions to pass therethrough and which is covered on its sides with electrodes comprised of lanthanum strontium manganate (LSM) which in turn are coated with a layer of platinum to aid in the even distribution of the electrical current. An electrical current is passed through the electrodes to produce a voltage difference therebetween. The layers of YSZ and LSM are formed by a sol-gel process

    Large scale expansion of mobile elements in specific hotspot regions of the German outbreak _Escherichia coli_ O104:H4

    The outbreak strain of _E. coli_ O104:H4 has been sequenced by several groups and made available publicly for CrowdSourcing purposes. Genome comparisons of the complete finished sequence of TY2482 (BGI), have been made with the draft assemblies of c22711 (PacBio) and an historical outbreak strain from 2001 (U. Münster & Life Technologies). A plasmid, pTY2, carrying the _agg_ operon specifying the genes for aggregative adherence fimbriae reveals a frameshift in a gene, _aggB_, that may result in altered binding _in vivo_ compared to the unframeshifted state. Comparisons additionally reveal the presence of genomic islands specific to the outbreak strain relative to other sequenced _E. coli_ strains. These regions, and islands shared with the closest previously sequenced relative _E. coli_ 55989 have been analyzed for insertion sequences and transposable elements. Several islands found in the above strains that are not present in other sequenced _E. coli_ are found to harbor a large-scale expansion of mobile elements that are by and large confined to these hotspot or permissive areas of the chromosome. The implication is that these regions are in genomic flux and may represent specific areas of future concern due to the possibility of mobilisation of the associated genomic features likely responsible for the pathogenic features and antibiotic resistance seen in these strains

    A new class of nanostructured RE-doped SiO2-base materials that display superior fluorescence properties is provided. In particular, high gain combined with a broad and flat spectral band width is observed in material composed of a high fraction of a nano-dispersed metastable silicate phase in a glassy SiO2 matrix, produced by partial devitrification (crystallization) of several glassy Al2O3/Er2O3- and Y2O3/Er2O3-doped SiO2 compositions. Also, a highly deconvoluted spectral emission, with several prominent peaks, is observed in completely devitrified material, consisting of a uniform nano-dispersion of an equilibrium silicate phase in a crystobalite SiO2 matrix. Such enhanced fluorescence properties were observed in heat treated nanopowders prepared by vapor-phase, solgel, rapid solidification, and spray-pyrolysis method

    Lisa-S 2.8g autopilot for GPS-based flight of MAVs

    Recent advances in sensor miniaturization have enabled the development of a miniaturized fully functional autopilot. In this article, the open hardware and open software Paparazzi-UAV Lisa-S micro autopilot is presented, weighing only 2.8 grams and measuring 2 by 2 centimeters. It incorporates 2-way telemetry with a ground station, a Spektrum DMS2/DSMX remote control, an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), a Magnetometer, a GPS module and a 32-bit 72 MHz processor for stabilization and navigation. As an illustration, the Lisa-S has been mounted on various miniature multi-rotors. Mounting it on a Ladybird quadrotor leads to a 8.5 by 8.5 cm system weighing 27 grams (excluding battery).     3-Nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) is one of the main ingredients of many insensitive munitions, which are being used as replacements for conventional explosives. As its use becomes widespread, more research is needed to assess its environmental fate. Previous studies have shown that NTO is biologically reduced to 3-amino-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (ATO). However, the final degradation products of ATO are still unknown. We have studied the aerobic degradation of ATO by enrichment cultures derived from the soil. After multiple transfers, ATO degradation was monitored in closed bottles through measurements of inorganic carbon and nitrogen species. The results indicate that the members of the enrichment culture utilize ATO as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. As ATO was mineralized to CO₂, N₂, and NH₄⁺, microbial growth was observed in the culture. Co-substrates addition did not increase the ATO degradation rate. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the organisms that enriched using ATO as carbon and nitrogen source were Terrimonas spp., Ramlibacter-related spp., Mesorhizobium spp., Hydrogenophaga spp., Ralstonia spp., Pseudomonas spp., Ectothiorhodospiraceae, and Sphingopyxis. This is the first study to report the complete mineralization of ATO by soil microorganisms, expanding our understanding of natural attenuation and bioremediation of the explosive NTO.Journal ArticleFinal article publishe
