Studies on the littoral seaweed epifauna of St. Croix Island. 1. Physical and biological features of the littoral zone
The physical and biological features of the littoral zone of St. Croix Island are described as a prelude to studies on the seaweed epifauna. Wave action is the most important physical variable and shore community structure is markedly influenced by the differing degrees of wave action around the Island. Sheltered, moderately exposed, exposed and very exposed littoral communities are distinguished and at 3 transects the zonation of the macrofauna and the percentage cover of the littoral seaweeds is determined. Seasonal variation, particularly in the seaweed Porphyra capensis , is documented, seaweed cover is related to biomass and energy values for 14 littoral seaweeds are determined

Accessibility of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway
Plan BThe purpose of this study was to determine the level of accessibility that currently exists within the confines of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, the Upper St. Croix River, and specifically the Namekogon district for persons who are physically disabled. This study examined the accessibility of public access facilities, and sites as determined by road access to recreational opportunities. Each predetermine site was accessed using observations and measurement in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act checklist for Readily Achievable Barrier Removal dated August 1995. This study was conducted to gain insight as to the current levels of accessibility and develop an awareness of potential issues surrounding accessibility within the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway

The Designated Hitter Rule in Baseball as a Natural Experiment
All but two professional baseball leagues have adopted the “designated hitter” (DH) rule, which allows a team’s manager to designate a player to bat at the plate and run the bases in place of another player, usually the team’s pitcher. Unlike the team’s other players, the designated hitter does not take the field to play defense. This paper provides a survey of a large literature investigating the DH rule’s effect on the incentives of pitchers to hit batters and on changes in the number of hit batsmen. We also consider whether the DH rule provides a good example of a natural experiment, as some professional baseball leagues were “treated” with the DH rule and others were not treated.baseball, designated hitter, moral hazard, natural experiment, Japan

Studies on the littoral seaweed epifauna of St.Croix Island. 3. Gelidium pristoides (Rhodophyta) and its epifauna
Total area of the midlittoral G. pristoides belt was 4241 m super(2) and total summer standing crop of this perennial seaweed was 265 kg (dry mass). Monthly numerical composition of G. pristoides) epifauna at three sites on St. Croix is presented and discussed. Nematodesdominated the epifauna throughout the year with harpacticoids the second most abundant taxon. The presence of nauplius, annelid and Diptera larvae as well as juvenile amphipods and molluscs in the epifauna indicates the role of seaweeds as nursery areas for littoral fauna. G. pristoides epifauna averaged 1,77 x 10 super(5) animals m super(-2). Total summer standing stock of G. pristoides epifuana on St. Croix was determined by two methods which yielded 6,4 x 10 super(8) and 7,3 x 10 super(8) animals respectively
