    A national study to determine the characteristics of technological literacy for high school graduates

    The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of technological literacy for high school graduates. A panel of experts in technological literacy was used to formulate the list of characteristics and make judgments on each. The design of the study was the Delphi Method, using the Q-Sort Technique, with the Thurstone and Chave Method of Equal Appearing Intervals. Using the Method of Equal Appearing Intervals, median scores and Q-Values were calculated for each characteristic. The 80th percentile was used to determine when a characteristic reached consensus. A panel of experts was chosen from among seven groups: (a) philosophers of education, (b) technology educators, (c) engineering educators, (d) scientists, (e) science educators, (f) classroom teachers, and (g) business and education support. The results of the study provide a clearer focus on what is meant by technological literacy. This study identified a list of 24 consensus items to be used as minimum characteristics of technological literacy for high school graduates.Ed. D

He is a good worker, and a hard one, and is always busy working on some puzzling point in law which interests him. Croft (October 10, 1888 - January 16, 1989) was born in Fulton, Kentucky to George Jacob Croft and Cora Belle Howard. Croft had a great interest in the railroad industry. After obtaining his LL.B. from the College of Law, he moved back to his hometown of Fulton and began working for the Illinois Central Railroad Company. Croft worked for the ICRR Co. for 52 years before his retirement in 1965. Additionally, he served in the United States Army during World War I.     Cultural activism and the politics of place-making

    In this paper, we explore the relationship between creative practice, activism, and urban place-making by considering the role they play in the construction of meaning in urban spaces. Through an analysis of two activist groups based in Stokes Croft, Bristol (UK), we argue that cultural activism provides new political prospects within the wider context of global capitalism through the cultivation of a shared aesthetics of protest. By cultivating aspects of shared history and a mutual enthusiasm for creative practice as a form of resistance, Stokes Croft has emerged as a ‘space of nurturance’ for creative sensibilities. However, we note how Stokes Croft as an autonomous space remains open-ended and multiple for activists interested in promoting different visions of social justice

    Disease transmission in animal social networks

    Social network analysis is inherently suited to the study of disease transmission because it allows the exploration of epidemiological relationships between susceptible and infected individuals within individual populations, which are often highly heterogeneous. Coupling the study of social networks with the infection status of individuals or groups has provided insight into how host behaviour affects network structure, and vice versa. This chapter provides an overview of the parasite transmission processes in animal social networks and illustrates how using the network approach has contributed to an understanding of the central biological issues in disease transmission. The chapter then addresses some important considerations such as how to adequately capture disease transmission on a social network, suitable time intervals for constructing parasite transmission networks, and which methods are appropriate for data collection, data analysis, and bias reduction. Next, the chapter reviews ecological methods that are of specific importance for host–parasite interactions, and explores how host–parasite interactions, animal behaviour, and disease transmission networks are inter-related. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how the application of network analysis to our understanding of infectious disease transmission might develop in the futur

    Numerical analysis of a 3-D printed porous trailing edge for broadband noise reduction

    Lattice Boltzmann simulations were carried out to investigate the noise mitigation mechanisms of a 3-D printed porous trailing-edge insert, elucidating the link between noise reduction and material permeability. The porous insert is based on a unit cell resembling a lattice of diamond atoms. It replaces the last 20 % chord of a NACA 0018 at zero angle-of-attack. A partially blocked insert is considered by adding a solid partition between 84 % and 96 % of the aerofoil chord. The regular porous insert achieves a substantial noise reduction at low frequencies, although a slight noise increase is found at high frequencies. The partially blocked porous insert exhibits a lower noise reduction level, but the noise emission at mid-to-high frequency is slightly affected. The segment of the porous insert near the tip plays a dominant role in promoting noise mitigation, whereas the solid-porous junction contributes, in addition to the rough surface, towards the high-frequency excess noise. The current study demonstrates the existence of an entrance length associated with the porous material geometry, which is linked to the pressure release process that is responsible for promoting noise mitigation. This process is characterised by the aerodynamic interaction between pressure fluctuations across the porous medium, which is found at locations where the porous insert thickness is less than twice the entrance length. Present results also suggest that the noise attenuation level is related to both the chordwise extent of the porous insert and the streamwise turbulent length scale.
