    The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Wayne Cripe. Cripe was born in Camden, Indiana 22 March 1926. Drafted into the US Marine Corps in June 1944 he went to boot camp at Parris Island. After twelve weeks he was sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He describes the training he underwent. During November 1944 he was sent to Camp Banyan, Hilo, Hawaii where he was assigned to the 5th Marine Division, 32nd Replacement Battalion. He tells of landing on Iwo Jima and seeing the American flag flying over Mount Suribachi as he was unloading supplies on the beach. He was on Iwo Jima seventeen days before he was severely wounded by fragments from a Japanese grenade. After being tended by a hospital corpsman he was evacuated to the US Samaritan (AH-10) and taken to Aiea Naval Hospital at Pearl Harbor. After spending six months at the hospital he was sent to San Diego where he received a physical evaluation and was discharged 5 May 1946

    Dr. Cripe is the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplant and the Gordon Teter Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cancer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He is also a principal investigator in the Center for Childhood Cancer Research at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He is a tenured Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University Wexner College of Medicine and a member of the Translational Therapeutics Program and the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research is focused on the laboratory-based development and early phase clinical testing of cellular, viral and gene therapies for pediatric cancers and has been supported by numerous extramural grants including multiple R-, U- and P-level NIH grants. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed manuscripts and delivered over 220 invited lectures. He is the PI of a T32 training grant in pediatric cancer. He is the former chair of the FDA’s Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapy Advisory Committee. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the flagship cancer journal of the American Society of Cell and Gene Therapy, Molecular Therapy Oncology. He is the founder of the educational podcast series “This Week in Pediatric Oncology,” and has published 112 episodes.     Broadband Measurement and Reduction of Quantum Radiation Pressure Noise in the Audio Band

    This book presents a direct measurement of quantum back action, or radiation pressure noise, on a macroscopic object at room temperature across a broad bandwidth in the audio range. This noise source was predicted to be a limitation for gravitational wave interferometers in the 1980s, but it has evaded direct characterization in the gravitational wave community due to the inherent difficult of reducing thermal fluctuations below the quantum back action level. This back action noise is a potential limitation in Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, and Cripe\u27s experiment has provided a platform for the demonstration of quantum measurement techniques that will allow quantum radiation pressure noise to be reduced in these detectors. The experimental techniques Cripe developed for this purpose are also applicable to any continuous measurement operating near the quantum limit, and could lead to the possibility of observing non-classical behavior of macroscopic objects.https://repository.lsu.edu/facultybooks/1311/thumbnail.jp
