The Future of Mathematics in Economics: A Philosophically Grounded Proposal

    No full text
The use of mathematics in economics has been widely discussed. The philosophical discussion on what mathematics is remains unsettled on why it can be applied to the study of the real world. We propose to get back to some philosophical conceptions that lead to a language-like role for the mathematical analysis of economic phenomena and present some problems of interest that can be better examined in this light. Category theory provides the appropriate tools for these analytical approach.Fil: Crespo, Ricardo Fernando. Universidad Austral; ArgentinaFil: Tohmé, Fernando Abel. Aristotelian hylomorphism: A framework for non-physicalist philosophers about philosophy of mind

    No full text
The results of a recent survey on the philosophical views of contemporary, mainly Anglo-Saxon professional philosophers have shown that a supposedly predominance of physicalist reductionist positions in the philosophy of neurosciences is far from being unanimous. This paper will explore one possible philosophical position rooting a non-physicalist reductionist conception of mind. It will suggest and argue that a classical philosophical frame, Aristotelian hylomorphism, provides adequate non-reductionist answers not falling into dualisms. Finally, it will offer the corresponding conclusions.Fil: Crespo, Ricardo Fernando. Universidad Austral. Instituto de Altos Estudios; Argentina. Universidad Nacional de Cuyo; Argentina. Summary of threats for river dolphins in South America: Past, present and future

    No full text
In the early eighties a great concern about the future of river dolphins led the Cetacean Specialist Group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission to concentrate their efforts on strategy to deal with those concerns. In 1986, the Workshop on Biology and Conservation of the Platanistoid Dolphins was the first step to asses issues related with threats and recommendations for the survival of river dolphins in the entire world (Perrin et al. 1989). This meeting encouraged some researchers in South America to start long term river projects related to river dolphins, especially in Brazil and Colombia. For almost ten years some important contributions about the distribution, biology and identification of threats were made. During these years some documents were published. These documents were and are currently the lead information to all researchers involved in research, conservation and educational projects. These documents are the 1994-1998 Action Plan for the Conservation of Cetaceans (Reeves & Leatherwood 1994), International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee Report 2000, and the 2002-2010 Conservation Action Plan the World’s Cetaceans (Reeves et al. 2003).Fil: Trujillo, Fernando. On money as a conventional sign: Revisiting Aristotle’s conception of money

    No full text
Regardless of the historical evolution of money, some passages of Aristotle's works shed light on its meaning and nature. This paper will attentively consider these passages. The first section presents Aristotle's thoughts on money. While the second section analyses money as a unit of measurement, the third section deals with its conventional nature, and the fourth draws from the theories of signs elaborated by John Poinsot and Charles Peirce to expand the explanation of the nature of money as a sign. The conclusion considers three levels of consideration of money based on Aristotle's thoughts: (1) universal abstract money, (2) instantiated in specific currencies, and (3) the actualization of their properties and potentialities in actual economic dealings.Fil: Crespo, Ricardo Fernando. Los “problemas de crecimiento” de la economía moderna

    Get PDF
Fil: Crespo, Ricardo Fernando. The Capabilities Approaches and Aristotelian Practical Reason

This paper deals with the problem of how to make decisions about capabilities, as conceived by Amartya Sen. Given their incommensurable character, how to determine the particular set of capabilities to be sought in particular situations? In the last instance I posit that we need a qualitative appraisal, thus introducing the concept of “practical comparability”, which is built on Aristotelian philosophical grounds.Fil: Crespo, Ricardo Fernando.
