This research deals with the Ionian Islands as 'historiographical object', starting from the idea itself of the Ionian Islands as archipelago, which is a modern geographical concept. We examine the different modern historiographical identities assigned to these islands during the last two centuries and how they influenced the historical interpretation. At the beginning of the XIXth century. travellers and scholars considered them first of all as 'the realm of Odysseus' and the first archaeological explorations, but also many later scientific campaigns, had Homer as a starting point. Instead, these islands played little role in the Histories of Greece, except for the case of the Corcyrean sedition described by Thucydides, which the French Revolution brought at the centre of the political debate. In the second half of the XXth century, within a general shift of attention to the peripheries of Greece, the Ionian Islands regained an important role, as connective point in the trading routes towards the Adriatic Sea and Italy. We will give particular attention to the role of the islands in the debate on the Euboian colonisation and to the most recent perspectives, where the Ionian Islands are finally considered as an active historical subject

The Nani Museum: Greek and Latin Inscriptions from Greece and Dalmatia

One of the most important antiquarian collections that existed in Venice at the time of the Serenissima Republic was that of the Nani di San Trovaso family. It included more than 400 ancient objects, which were put together around the mid 18th century by the two brothers Bernardo and Giacomo Nani. Almost half of these objects were Greek and Latin inscriptions, mainly coming from the Eastern coasts of the Adriatic Sea, the Ionian Islands, mainland Greece, and the Aegean. The first part of this article presents an overview of the history of the creation and dispersal of the Nani Museum, with specific attention to its epigraphic component. Drawing on unpublished or little known documents, two subsequent sections provide a census of all the Greek inscriptions and of the Latin inscriptions from Dalmatia that once belonged to the Nani Museum, offering information about their ancient provenance, the steps of their dispersal, and their present location

Protective effect of cyanidin (IdB 1027) against aspirin-induced fall in gastric transmucosal potential difference in normal subjects.

The effect of the natural flavonoid cyanidin (IdB 1027), 1200mg daily for 8 days, on the fall in gastric transmucosal potential difference induced by a single dose of aspirin (1000mg by nasogastric tube) was evaluated in 7 normal male volunteers. As compared to pretreatment values, IdB 1027 caused a significant reduction in both the percentage fall in transmucosal potential difference at the time of peak aspirin effect (from 37 +/- 18% to 18 +/- 5%, p less than 0.05) and the area under potential difference baseline (from 811 +/- 624 mvolt. min to 338 +/- 150 mvolt. min, p less than 0.05). These results provide evidence for a protecting effect of IdB 1027 against aspirin-induced gastric mucosal damage in man
