N and P limitation of fynbos plants and the nutritional status of legume habitats in the Cape Floristic Region

In general, terrestrial ecosystems are limited by both N and P, but, as legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen, I hypothesized that fynbos legumes would be P limited and nonlegumes would be N limited, and that the degree to which these plants respond to N and P would depend on the levels of each of these two nutrients in the growth media. To test these hypotheses, three legumes and three non-legumes native to the fynbos were grown in a complete factorial arrangement of four levels of N and P in a glass house. Nitrogen was supplied at 20, 40, 80 and 150 mg kg-¹ soil and P at 0.8, 5, 15, and 31 mg kg-¹. Overall, the results showed that the responses of the legume and nonlegume species to N and P supply were species specific, but that the legume species seemed to be more limited by N supply than the non-legumes. There was no N x P interaction in this study, which implied that the plant response to N and P, did not depend on the levels of each other. Given the nitrogen fixing capabilities of legumes and high nutrient demanding lifestyle, I made the hypothesis that, on a given landscape, the soils on which the fynbos legumes occur were more nutrient rich than the bulk non-legume soils. Related to this hypothesis is the question of whether the more nutrient rich soils within the legume populations would be mirrored by leaves with both a higher specific leaf area and higher nutrient concentration, than the leaves of the non-legumes. To test these hypotheses, I determined the nutrient levels of both the soils and plants within both the legume- and non-legumes stands at eight different sites in the CFR. The data were subjected to multifactorial discriminant function analysis and Nested ANOVA analyses. The results of the analyses led to the conclusion that the soil on which legume stands occurred were rarely more fertile than the non-legumes on the landscape in the CFR, and, except for leaf N, there seemed to be no differences between leaf nutrient concentrations and the SLA of the legume and non-legume plants

Considerations on the historic context surrounding the publications attributed to Denis & Schiffermüller

In the second half of the 18th century, the influential Jesuit college named Theresianum ran an educational and scientific project for working systematically on the Lepidoptera occurring in the vicinity of Vienna, Austria. The teachers of the college prepared a document under the title “Ankündung eines systematischen Werkes von den Schmetterlingen der Wienergegend”, with the aim of informing the ecclesiastical and secular authorities about the goal of the enterprise. On the board of the Theresianum there were several Jesuits, who later were considered authorities concerning Lepidoptera, namely: Michael Denis SJ, Sigismund Hohenwart SJ, Ludwig Mitterpacher SJ, Matthias Piller SJ, and Ignaz Schiffermüller SJ. They were acknowledged by Lepidoptera patronyms in the “Ankündung”, which suggests that they may have been involved in this project. This “Ankündung” was mentioned in the book “Versuch eines Farbensystems” in 1771, which was authored by Ignaz Schiffermüller. Also from this book, it can be postulated that Ignaz Schiffermüller regarded himself as a responsible author or editor of the “Ankündung”. Printing of the “Ankündung” was delayed for unspecified reasons, the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773 may have been one of them. Subsequently, Ignaz Schiffermüller managed to circulate a limited number of copies of the “Ankündung” in 1775, and then the same document appeared before a wider audience under the new title “Systematisches Verzeichniss der Schmetterlinge der Wienergegend” in 1776. Both these publications were at the time and ever since attributed to Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller, because some subsequent citations considered these two Jesuits as the principal authors

The oldest preserved Latin Passion of St. Denis, known as the Gloriosae, has recently been republished byMichael Lapidge. The edition, however, is unsatisfactory, since it uses only fifteen of more than thirty-six extant manuscripts. In addition, the editor’s conclusions regarding the Passion’s date (eighth century) and origin (Aquitaine) are unconvincing. A new analysis of the text, its tradition and its reception suggests a different chronology. A first version of the Passion, now lost, must have been written as early as the late fifth or early sixth century, when the cult of Denis was developing in and around Paris. Such a text is mentioned by the author of the Life of St. Genevieve in 520. At the end of the sixth century, the text was rewritten in the form in which we know it today (BHL 2171) : it was then included in the collection of passions assembled by Bishop Ceraunus of Paris, which immediately began to circulate. The addition of Denis and his followers to the Hieronymite Martyrology dates from the same period. As the manuscript tradition demonstrates, the text was established and diffused before 750 and the development and spread of legendaries. Heinzelmann Martin. La passion Gloriosae de Saint Denis (BHL 2171). The campaign for democratic socialism 1960-1964.

    No full text
PhDIn early 1960 it seemed likely that the official Labour Party defence policy would be defeated by a unilateralist resolution at the Scarborough Conference. In response to this possibility the Campaign for Democratic Socialism, or CDS, was established. The CDS projected the image of a grass-roots movement inspired by Gaitskell's "fight and fight again" speech. But it was run by a Campaign Committee which included leading members of the Party like Tony Crosland, Roy Jenkins and Patrick Gordon Walker, as well as less well known members like Bill Rodgers, Dick Taverne, Philip Williams, Brian Walden, Denis Howell and David Marquand. This highly talented group launched an elaborate and successful lobbying, publicity and briefing operation which was influential in overturning the unilateralist vote at the Blackpool Conference of 1961. After Blackpool the Campaign helped many of its leading members find seats in the House of Commons while continuing to put the "revisionist" case through its newspaper Campaign. The importance of the CDS in the history of the Labour Party is, primarily, as the first internal pressure group organised by the right of the Party. It was also the first internal Party group to use such sophisticated lobbying techniques. Moreover, the subsequent careers of the leading members of the Campaign influenced the development of the Labour Party. The CDS was an important formative political action for many of them. Finally many of the CDS supporters set-up or joined the SDP when it was launched

Mobile banking and financial inclusion: The regulatory lessons

Mobile banking is growing at a remarkable speed around the world. In the process it is creating considerable uncertainty about the appropriate regulatory response to this newly emerging service. This paper sets out a framework for considering the design of regulation of mobile banking. Since it lies at the interface between financial services and telecoms, mobile banking also raises competition policy and interoperability issues that are discussed in the paper. Finally, by unbundling payments services into its component parts, mobile banking provides important lessons for the design of financial regulation more generally in developed as well as developing economies. --Banking,Regulation,Microfinance,Payments System,Mobile Money

Evaluating concepts for short-term control in financial service processes

    No full text
Financial services are characterised by the integration of customers while the service is being delivered. This integration leads to interruptions and thus delays in the processing of a customer order until for example the customer provides the missing input. Because customer behaviour can only be planned to a certain extent this is a major problem for an efficient control of financial service processes. It would be helpful to know which concept leads to the best solution for a certain situation in controlling the process. A concept contains explicit practical knowledge e.g. using a stand-by-employee or a prioritisation of customer orders with first-infirst-out. As financial services differ from manufacturing processes application knowledge of concepts cannot be transferred one to one. To test concepts regarding their ability to deal efficiently with interruptions by customers short-term simulations should be conducted. Shortterm simulation uses the actual state of a process and is not focussing on steady-state results. The research presented focuses on comparing several concepts for short-term control using case-study data of a typical financial service process. For this process a simulation model is built based on process mining. This approach is used to gather information out of documented timestamps of underlying process-aware information systems. Such timestamps allow a historical analysis to build typical scenarios and to gather the actual state of a financial service process as a starting point for a simulation analysis. The depicted concepts are simulated for different typical scenarios points to determine respectively which concept suits best. The results show which concepts suit best in certain situations for the case study conducted. --short-term control, financial services, business process simulation
