Familial congenital pseudarthrosis of the ulna

    No full text
A mother and daughter, both presented with congenital pseudarthrosis of the ulna due to neuro-fibromatosis. The daughter is one of identical twins, the second twin not having a pseudarthrosis. The mother's uncle also had pseudarthrosis of the tibia. This suggests a complex variable genetic inheritance pattern for pseudarthrosis in neurofibromatosis. Despite having had no treatment, the mother had minimal symptoms, minimal deformity, and no radial head dislocation.<br/

Recovery of rare earth elements from flat-panel displays with micro-magnetic density separation technique

    No full text
This report introduces a method for the separation of fine particles (45-125 µm), based on the density of these particles. The driving force behind this research is the desire to extract indium from a waste stream of flat panel displays (FPD). During the processing of the FDPs, dust is generated which contains a significant amount of indium. This dust is the focus material in this project. The particles are separated by means of density magnetic separation (MDS). To gain more insight in the use of using MDS technique with fine particles, a series of experiments has been conducted using a synthetic dust of quartz and sphalerite minerals as the to be separated fines. In the experiments, the particles sizes of the dust was varied to investigate the influence of this variable. A MDS method for the separation of the FPD dust has been set up and the quality of separation has been studied using XRF analysis. The performed experiments provide a good basis for further research. From this thesis it can be concluded that separation of fine particles with the process parameters used in this project, is not feasible. Recommendation are made to improve the separation quality.Materials and EnvironmentStructural EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

    No full text

Evolutionary Resilience: An approach to in situ settlement upgrading in the post disaster communities of Cerros Las Canas and La Cruz, Valparaiso, Chile

    No full text
The case of Valparaíso, is predominantly chosen because of its recent misfortune that has occurred in April 2014. Rapid urbanization has struck on the steep slopes around the centre of Valparaíso causing them to perch on precarious land. Due to its geography, landslides, earthquakes and wildfires are a common threat that might contribute to the disturbance of transforming an existing poor community into a safe and secure neighbourhood. On April 14th, wildfires have consumed more than 2,900 homes, leaving around 12,000 people homeless (UNDP, 2014; Quirk, 2014). A notable remark is that this was not the first disaster the people of Valparaíso needed to witness. In fact, there was a similar wildfire back in 2008 and in 2013 that occurred on these same hills (UTFSM, 2014). With the former residents already commencing to reconstruct their homes on these ashen hills, it is important to prevent entering in the same recurring cycle of a disaster prone area with vulnerable communities. In the first part of this graduation project, a strategic approach for in situ settlement upgrading has been formed based on the concept of evolutionary resilience. The object of this part of the paper is to test the strategic approach to the specific case of Valparaíso. This integrated response, addressing the importance of evolutionary resilience in a disaster prone vulnerable community, is ultimately reassessed seeking for possible replicable solutions for communities in similar situations elsewhere in the world.Explore LabArchitectureArchitecture and The Built Environmen

    Authorship identification of instant messages

    No full text
Authorship attribution is a process in which the author of the given text corpus can be automatically recognized using some techniques. In early days the approach to authorship detection was stylometric which is used to identify the particular author of the printed materials, online texts such as blogs, e-mails, tweets, posts etc. In past years e-mails took a big role in communication. In a vast distribution of social media people spend lot of time in online communication like chatting, which nowadays becomes an easiest and effective communication media among people. The social tool like Facebook, Skype, Google talk and the other instant messaging tools contribute greater role in the real time communication rather than the e-mails.In current era, cybercrimes and security threats become a big issue on the all internet related activities.Even though, instant messaging is highly used as fast and effective communication,it is more vulnerable to several attacks and this issue need to be addressed. So far, standard stylometric features have been used for the authorship detection. However, attempts to this approach are still in beginning. Therefore, this paper produces an alternative way for authorship attribution of instant messages. Here, we have used vector space model using unigram technique. Processed chat data set from individual users in which 2/3 of the datais treated as training set and the remaining set is usedfortesting. Similarity score between training and the testing set have been computed using the given algorithm. From the overall result, 75% of the training corpus shows the maximum similarity score with its testing pair. Moreover, the length of the chat corpus does a significant effect on the similarity score which determine the authorship attribution of the instant messages
