We investigate the problem of defining black holes in closed universes. We do this by first finding all spherically symmetric marginally trapped surfaces in the dust-filled Tolman S3 universes, and test three definitions which have been proposed for black holes in closed universes. The defini-tions of Wheeler and Tipler are easy to apply, but we find that Hayward’s definition is quite complicated.
