    Dietary inflammatory index, sleep duration, and sleep quality: a systematic review

    The inflammatory potential of the diet, as measured by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®), has been repeatedly shown to be associated with various inflammatory markers and mental and physical health outcomes. Of specific importance, several cross-sectional studies revealed mixed results regarding the correlations between the DII and sleep outcomes. Hence, in the current paper, a systematic review that examines the associations between the DII, sleep duration, and sleep quality was performed. The PubMed database was systematically searched for studies published up to November 2023 following PRISMA guidelines. Only cross-sectional studies that assessed the DII, sleep duration, and sleep quality across healthy and unhealthy cohorts were included. Eleven and seven studies were included in the systematic review for sleep quality and duration, respectively. The results of the present systematic review show that pro-inflammatory diets may be associated with poor sleep outcomes (duration and quality); however, as the current literature is inconsistent and limited, further cross-sectional studies in larger cohorts are necessary to (i) explore this relationship to address this heterogeneity and (ii) explore populations that are more sensitive to diet-induced inflammation

    Diet and mental health in school-aged children: a mini review of school-based dietary intervention studies

    School-based dietary interventions are implemented to improve health outcomes in children and adolescents, yet their impact on mental health and wellbeing remains underexplored. This mini-review synthesized findings from seventeen interventions assessing behavioral functioning and mental health symptoms in children (6–12 years) or adolescents (13–18 years). Most studies were conducted across multiple sites, enabling recruitment of large, diverse populations. More studies were conducted in children compared to adolescents. Behavioral outcomes such as hyperactivity, inattention, and oppositional behavior were commonly assessed in younger children via parent or teacher reports, while adolescent studies more frequently measured mental health symptoms, including depression and anxiety, through self-report. Supplementation, particularly in the context of nutrient deficiencies, was associated with modest improvements in behavioral functioning in children and mental health symptoms in adolescents. However, outcomes varied by the assessor (parent or teacher), and some studies showed placebo effects. In contrast, food reformulation interventions showed no significant impact on mental health outcomes. Despite the use of validated tools, methodological limitations, and variation in participants’ nutritional status limit interpretation. Overall, school-based dietary interventions show potential to improve mental health by reaching large, diverse populations. Further research is needed using standardized, age-appropriate measures and incorporating assessment of nutritional status to understand how diet can support and improve mental health in children and adolescents

    It is well-known that chronic low-grade inflammation is implicated in both physical and mental non-communicable diseases. Diet, a leading risk factor for non-communicable diseases, has been repeatedly shown to be related to inflammation, as well as various health outcomes, including mental and cognitive health. In the current editorial paper, we briefly summarise the current state of evidence and discuss the potential mediating role of inflammation between diet and mental/cognitive health and our perspective on challenges and future research directions in the domain of inflammation and diet, with a specific focus on mental and cognitive health

    Associations between number of siblings, birth order, eating rate and adiposity in children and adults

    Eating quickly is associated with eating larger amounts at mealtimes and faster eaters tend to have a higher BMI. Evidence suggests that sibling structure influences the development of childhood eating behaviours. We hypothesized that number of siblings and birth order might play a role in the development of eating rate. In two UK studies, children in Bristol (n = 132; Study 1) and adults and children in London (adults n = 552, children n = 256; Study 2) reported their eating rate, number of siblings, and birth order. A BMI measurement was obtained and in Study 2 waist circumference was recorded. Ordered logistic regression was used to examine effects of sibling structure on eating rate and linear regression assessed effects of eating rate on BMI. Faster eating was associated with higher BMI and a larger waist, in children and adults (ps &lt; .01). In Study 1, first-born children were twice as likely to eat faster compared to children who were not first-born (P &lt; .04). In Study 2, only-child adults reported eating slower than adults who were not first-born (P &lt; .003). Additionally, higher number of siblings was associated with faster eating rate in children from Bristol (P &lt; .05), but not in children from London. London adults without siblings ate slower than those with two or more (P = .01), but having one sibling was associated with eating faster than having two or more (P = .01). These findings reveal how birth order and number of siblings might influence eating rate. Exploring these relationships through direct observation would be beneficial in future studies.© 2021 The Author(s).
