M3D-BIO - Microfluidics-Enabled 3D Printing for Biofabrication
Microfluidics market is the fastest growing research area in the world, and they have shown much promise in biofabrication and 3D bioprinting of tissues and organs. However, microfluidics is conventionally produced using drawn-out and expensive lithographic methods, hindering their wider uptake. To this end, we have established a streamlined pipeline which incorporates simulation, design, fabrication and validation processes to produce versatile microfluidic chip nozzles for a range of applications in biofabrication. The microfluidic devices are produced by combining material extrusion additive manufacturing (MEAM) with innovative design approaches to achieve leak-free and low-surface roughness channels without any need of special tubing. These microfluidic chip nozzles create complex anisotropic fibrous core-shell structures matching blood vessels at resolutions not reported previously. The results of this study show that the novel microfluidics system can be adopted in a wide range of applications from tissue scaffolds, cell culture systems, biochemical sensors and lab-on-a-chips, paving ways for next generation of 3D-printed microfluidics in biofabrication.</p
Versatile Microfluidics for Biofabrication Platforms Enabled by an Agile and Inexpensive Fabrication Pipeline
Microfluidics have transformed diagnosis and screening in regenerative medicine. Recently, they are showing much promise in biofabrication. However, their adoption is inhibited by costly and drawn‐out lithographic processes thus limiting progress. Here, multi‐material fibers with complex core‐shell geometries with sizes matching those of human arteries and arterioles are fabricated employing versatile microfluidic devices produced using an agile and inexpensive manufacturing pipeline. The pipeline consists of material extrusion additive manufacturing with an innovative continuously varied extrusion (CONVEX) approach to produce microfluidics with complex seamless geometries including, novel variable‐width zigzag (V‐zigzag) mixers with channel widths ranging from 100–400 µm and hydrodynamic flow‐focusing components. The microfluidic systems facilitated rapid mixing of fluids by decelerating the fluids at specific zones to allow for increased diffusion across the interfaces. Better mixing even at high flow rates (100−1000 µL min−1) whilst avoiding turbulence led to high cell cytocompatibility (>86%) even when 100 µm nozzles are used. The presented 3D‐printed microfluidic system is versatile, simple and efficient, offering a great potential to significantly advance the microfluidic platform in regenerative medicine
A novel twist on an old theme: beta-Halovinylsilanes, a new elimination approach to oligoyne assembly
This article summarises our recent efforts towards using beta-halovinyisilanes in a new approach to oligoyne assembly. beta-Halovinylsilanes are particularly useful masked alkynes since the free alkyne can be released under mild reaction conditions by treatment with fluoride. To this end, beta-chlorovinylsilane and beta-fluorovinylsilane motifs have been incorporated into a 1-trimethylsilyl-hexa-3-en-1,5-diyne scaffold. Oxidative dimerisation of this masked triyne provides a centrosymmetric masked hexayne, which serves as our building block for oligoyne assembly. We have assembled a masked dodecayne using this methodology and shown that treatment of the masked dodecayne with fluoride effects a four-fold dechlorosilylation to provide the corresponding dodecayne, which is the longest aryl end-capped oligoyne reported to date. This long-chain oligoyne proved to be highly unstable. Molecular encapsulation provides a potential solution to the problem of instability associated with long-chain oligoynes, and preliminary results where one of our masked hexaynes was modified in order to form an insulated system are presented. beta-Halovinylsilanes in oligoyne synthesis: a fluoride-catalysed unmasking of alkynes from beta-fluorovinylsilanes
A stereoselective haloclestannylation of (E)-beta-stannylvinyisilane 6 has been used to access a range of (E)-beta-halovinylsilanes. Most notably, the beta-fluorovinylsilane 14 was accessed in high yield using the Select-fluor (R) reagent, and subsequently converted into a masked hexayne 22. Release of the hexayne 25 was achieved by exposing 22 to sub-stoichiometric quantities of fluoride. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Active small-scale space debris removal by a space-based laser
Space debris objects with sizes between 1 and 10 cm form the greatest risks for creating new collisions with active spacecraft as they are too small to track and too large to be shielded against. This research has simulated the performance of a space-based laser system on the removal of these small-scale debris objects. The selected system is placed in a Sun-synchronous orbit and consists of a high power 20 kW laser that shoots 600 J energy pulses with a repetition frequency of 33.33 Hz. The system detects and tracks the objects in-situ using a 1.5 m telescope from 800 km distance. From a distance of about 500 km, the laser fluence on the targets is sufficiently high to trigger ablation on the material surface. This decelerates the debris object and lowers its lifetime. The laser is tested on a randomly generated debris population of 5 000 objects. The results show that after 10 days of simulation, the lifetime of 334 objects are effectively lowered below 25 years and 614 objects are lowered below one month. At longer simulation time the efficiency decreases since less and less objects are left to target. Extrapolating the results, the laser could on an annual basis lower the lifetime of more than 36 000 objects below 1 month and 18 000 objects below 25 years, which is very promising. The results show that a space-based laser system is highly efficient as an Active Debris Removal (ADR) technique for debris objects between 1 and 10 cm.Aerospace Engineerin

Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control

Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the

It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play
Tomorrow Shines Soon.

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

after a short shutdown the Lacrosse league got the green light to play. And play they did! If you enjoy watching
playing a high-intensity, high-contact sport, then this is a game for you! With the Lacrosse league in its infancy in
^ber (this is just the second season of play) the team did a stellar job working on basic skills, learning plays, and
Alling as a team unit. They definitely had their ups and downs where the scoreboard was concerned. But considering

Advancements in direct-push seismic testing
Invasive seismic testing methods are used to evaluate the in-situ small-strain stiffness of soil and rock for geotechnical earthquake engineering analysis and design. These methods provide localized measurements of the constrained compression and shear wave velocities, V [subscript P] and V [subscript S], respectively. Early invasive testing methods, including crosshole (CH) and downhole (DH), were exclusively borehole-based (i.e., the test was performed in a pre-drilled borehole). The time and costs associated with the preparation of one or more boreholes are notable disadvantages of conventional CH and DH testing, significantly limiting their use. Direct-push variants of these testing methods have been developed, where the instrumentation can be installed in conical probes and a directly into the ground. This dissertation documents recent advancements in direct-push invasive seismic testing. One such advancement is the development of the direct-push crosshole testing (DPCH) method where P- and S-waves are propagated between instrumented cones, pushed directly into the ground. Each instrumented cone contains a sensor package including geophones to measure the seismic waveforms and a three-component MEMS accelerometer to track the cone deviation/position during the test. DPCH testing enables high-resolution profiles of V [subscript P] and V [subscript S] to be measured over the top 20 – 30 m of the subsurface. In addition to developing a high-resolution velocity profile, it is important to quantify the epistemic uncertainty associated with these measurements. Often, a single velocity profile is provided to the engineer with no indication of uncertainty leaving the engineer to potentially over- or under-predict this uncertainty. Yet, through the consideration of multiple data reduction techniques and analysis methods, a robust and meaningful quantification of the epistemic uncertainty may be developed. A direct application of DPCH high-resolution V [subscript P] and V [subscript S] measurements is the estimation of in-situ void ratio in granular soils using a relationship developed by Foti et al. (2002). The effectiveness of using DPCH measurements to estimate in-situ void ratio in granular soils is critically examined through comparisons with current in-situ penetration based estimates and laboratory measurements developed at several case history sites. The limitations associated with these estimates are explored in-depth.One such advancement is the development of the direct-push crosshole testing (DPCH) method where P- and S-waves are propagated between instrumented cones, pushed directly into the ground.
