Culture of Fear and Control in Costa Rica (I). Crime Statistics and Law Enforcement
Huhn S. Culture of Fear and Control in Costa Rica (I). Crime Statistics and Law Enforcement. GIGA Working Papers. Vol 104. Hamburg: GIGA; 2009.The Costa Rican talk of crime is fundamentally based on the assumption that crime rates have increased significantly in recent years and that there is today a vast and alarming amount of crime. On the basis of this assumption, fear of crime, the call for the “iron fist,” and drastic law enforcement actions are continually increasing. While crime statistics are the logical basis for the hypothesis on the far-reaching extent of delinquency, they are used in a problematic way in the talk of crime. In this paper I discuss Costa Rican crime statis-tics, their development, and their utilization in the talk of crime against the background of criminological theory. The theses of the paper are that a) the informative value of crime statistics regarding Costa Rican reality is far more questionable than the common utiliza-tion of them implies and b) when they are used as argumentation, these crime statistics do not provide evidence of the oft-proclaimed rising crime wave

Taking stock of circadian clock complexity
Circadian clocks are ubiquitous! This terse sentence
has been used frequently in the last few years to mean
not only that almost all higher organisms (and some
bacteria) exhibit circadian rhythmicity controlled by
an endogenous circadian clock,1 but also that many
autonomous oscillators are present in different tissues
or organs.2,3 Clock research also represents one of
the more productive and faster evolving areas of biology,
as evidenced by the extraordinary number of
high profile publications that keep coming, thick and
fast. This in turn has produced a market for reviews
of molecular chronobiology, yet the ‘half-life’ of these
reviews is significantly affected by this explosive accumulation
of data and discourages potential authors to
undertake this (thankless) task. I am therefore particularly
pleased that a number of colleagues have committed
themselves to write these contributions for this
issue, which cover the most relevant aspects of circadian
rhythmicity in different model systems

When population and evolutionary genetics met behaviour
In this review, we analyse the impact of a population and evolutionary genetics approach on the study of insect behaviour. Our attention is focused on the model organism Drosophila melanogaster and several other insect spe-cies. In particular, we explore the relationship between rhythmic behaviours and the molecular evolution of clock and ion channel genes
