No full textProfessor Robert Masterson lives and works in the megalopolis of New York City, but spent his formative years in the American West, growing up and going to school in Colorado and New Mexico. First published at age 19, Masterson has written award-winning fiction, journalism, and creative nonfiction steadily ever since. His books of poetry and short prose, Trial by Water (1982), Artificial Rats & Electric Cats (2008), and Garnish Trouble (2011), have become collector’s items. Masterson’s work as a lecturer, a writer, and a teacher has taken him around the world, and his work appears in numerous anthologies, journals, magazines, newspapers, and on websites across the Internet. He is a professor of English at the City University of New York’s BMCC campus and divides his time between New York, New Mexico, and travel. Dr Ajit Kumar interviewed Professor Masterson about his different literary books and many other less shared facts of his life

Procedimiento para la creación y manejo inicial de parques nacionales: dos estudios de caso en Panamá

Sc) -- CATIE, Turrialba (Costa Rica),1989El estudio realizado consistió en la determinación y prueba de un procedimiento sencillo que permitió de manera consultada la delimitación de dos parques nacionales, también se preparó un documento que permitió normar la ejecución de acciones de ordenamiento en las dos áreas creadas, facilitando su administración inicial. Este trabajo se realizó entre julio de 1987 y septiembre de 1988, en la Provincia de Bocas del Toro, Panamá, utilizando los parques propuestos de La Amistad y Bocas del Toro. La primera etapa consistió en la recopilación de la información básica biofísica y socioeconómica necesaria para determinar objetivos específicos (acordes con la categoría de manejo de Parque Nacional), y límites de las dos áreas propuestas. Posteriormente, se realizaron visitas de campo para la comprobación de la utilidad de esta información. Una vez terminada esta etapa se prepararon sendos documentos para ser discutidos por un equipo conformado por representantes de diferentes instituciones gubernamentales y no gubernamentales con ingerencia en las dos áreas a protegerse. El proceso terminó con la aceptación por consenso de los objetivos y límites propuestos. Además, se contó con las sugerencias de un grupo de trabajo, al que también se le consultó por separado. De este proceso se produjeron básicamente los objetivos y los límites preliminares. El siguiente paso fue la preparación de un documento para cada área protegida. En estos documentos se incluyó: a. Antecedentes, b. Descripción general del área, c) Acciones para el manejo inicial, d) Anexos y mapas. Otros resultados del trabajo fueron, que la delimitación propuesta como las acciones a realizarse, fueron aceptadas por la Junta Directiva de INRENARE, y ambos parques nacionales se crearon según los lineamientos propuestos. Se siguieron además, las actividades priorizadas de manejo, en la medida que las posibilidades financieras lo fueron permitiendo. Se concluyó que el procedimiento utilizado agilizó la creación de las áreas y determinaron los objetivos y límites para las áreas justificables. Permitió al INRENARE realizar acciones de campo casi de forma inmediata y ordenada, así como la preparación de propuestas para adquisición de fondos. La principal recomendación hecha fue que este procedimiento se aplique a los parques nacionales por crear en Panamá y a otras categorías de manejo cuando la falta de fondos, personal o información básica no permita desarrollar un plan de manejo
Avifauna en bosque bajo: diferentes grados de alteración en el Pantanal (MS), Brasil

Sc) -- CATIE, Turrialba (Costa Rica), 1989El presente trabajo fue realizado en una región de bosque estacional semi-deciduo, cuya vegetación sufrió diferentes grados de simplificación a través de las reducciones de la cobertura y densidad vegetales, como sistemas de manejo para la implantación de pastizales en el Pantanal de Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. En el análisis de cada uno de los tres locales escogidos, se empleó el estudio de la avifauna como principal indicador ecológico de las consecuencias biológicas provocadas por prácticas de manejo del bosque tal como el corte y retirada de diferentes porcentajes de biomasa vegetal. La diversidad de la vegetación también se estudió, principalmente en relación a la composición y estructura del bosque. El estudio de la avifauna se efectuó a través de inventarios con redes neblina instaladas en el sotobosque, empleándose la técnica de captura, marcación y recaptura, así como observaciones con binoculares, siguiendo transectos irregulares, cubriendo toda el área. En dos de los ambientes estudiados, hubo la retirada del 57 y 90 por ciento respectivamente, de la área basal original, los cuales fueron comparados con un bosque con vegetación primitiva, que sirvió como control. El total de horas/red utilizadas para la recolecta de aves fue de 1803 y las observaciones ocuparon 186,25 horas. Los inventarios permitieron verificar la presencia de 196 especies distribuídas en 153 géneros 42 familias y 19 órdenes. Para cada especie capturada, se calcularon los Indices de Densidad de Frecuencia la Frecuencia relativa y el Indice de Recaptura. Para cada local estudiado fue calculado el Indice de Diversidad de Shannon-Wiener en relación a la comunidad de aves. Con los datos obtenidos por observaciones, se calcularon la Frecuencia de observaciones, la Frecuencia Relativa, así como el Indice de Diversidad de Shannon-Wiener para cada tratamiento. La cuantificación de las poblaciones se hizo en forma relativa, usándose como parámetro las observaciones hechas a cada 100 horas. De las 84 especies de aves encontradas en el bosque primitivo, diez fueron llamadas como indicadoras de vegetación densa, pues solamente ocurrieron en ese local. Las otras especies demostraron diferentes tendencias de preferencia de hábitats. Para algunas la alteración del bosque resultó indiferente cuando se analizó la distribución de sus poblaciones. Otras disminuyeron o aumentaron según el grado de simplificación. Hubieron 30 especies detectadas sólo en los dos tratamientos cuya vegetación pasó por un proceso de simplificación. Los nichos ecológicos y tróficos de cada especie también se evaluaron, con el objetivo de determinar las alteraciones de las poblaciones de aves dentro de la comunidad. Fue señalada la importancia de la planificación ecológica antes de la implantación de proyectos agrícolas, forestales y pecuarios, donde debe preverse la manutención de reductos de vegetación primitiva para favorecer la conservación de especies de aves que originalmente se encontraban

The Grangegorman Development Agency (GDA), which is the statutory body set up in 2006 under the GDA Act 2005 and is responsible for the re-development of the 73 acre Grangegorman site into a new urban quarter in Dublin 7 with health, education and community at its heart. The stakeholders are the HSE, the DIT and the local community.
In 2011 the GDA commissioned the Grangegorman Arts Strategy and the subsequent establishment of the Grangegorman Public Art Working Group (PAWG) to oversee the implementation of the Art Strategy.
The Arts Strategy operates under the theme of \u27...the lives we live\u27, an extract from \u27Dreams of a Summer Night,\u27 New Collected Poems (2011), by kind permission of the author, Derek Mahon, and the Gallery Press.
The project \u27Incarceration Altars,\u27 is partnered by the Irish Prison Service and the CDETB.

"An Empirical Analysis of Gender Bias in Education Spending in Paraguay"
No full textGender affects household spending in two areas that have been widely studied in the literature. One strand documents that greater female bargaining power within households results in a variety of shifts in household production and consumption. An important source of intrahousehold bargaining power is ownership of assets, especially land. Another strand examines gender bias in spending on children. This paper addresses both strands simultaneously. In it, differences in spending on education are examined empirically, at both the household and the individual level. Results are mixed, though the balance of evidence weighs toward pro-male bias in spending on education at the household level. Results also indicate that the relationship between asset ownership and female bargaining power within the household is contingent on the type of asset.
