In this paper, the author introduces the main ideas of von Wright on the existence of norms, as they are reconstructed by Alchourrón and Bulygin. Then a reading of the so-called Kantian principle, ought entails can, is presented following von Wright. Some reasons are given in favour of the acceptance of this reading, in accordance which the principle put partial conditions for the existence of norms. Against Alchourrón and Bulygin it is argued that such idea entails that, for conceptual reasons, normative systems cannot contain contradictory norms.
