No full textIn this comparative study of the form and theology of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil I interrogate how Weil's philosophical writings and her theology illuminate O'Connor's use of both narrative and non-fictional forms, and her Catholicism. The Introduction analyses how Weil's concept of superposed reading provides a new method of approaching both O'Connor, her writings, and O'Connor
studies, and focuses on how such apparently different women interconnect. Chapter One explores how both Weil and O'Connor attempt to write their theologies on the
souls of their readers yet are each subject to constraints imposed by form. Weil's concept of locating equilibrium between incommensurates is discussed, and her
distinctively philosophical approach to fictions and fictionality is used to investigate O'Connor's notion of prophetic fictions and the writer's role. Chapter Two assesses how both writers revivify Christian paradoxes. Weil's monstrous concept of affiiction, and O'Connor's use of the grotesque genre to jolt secular man into an
awareness of the sacred are scrutinised. Chapter Three studies how both writers consider an encounter between God and man is possible through the action of grace. No full textThe recently enacted reform of German federalism is supposed to make legislation faster, more efficient and better. To what extent are these expectations justified? In order to assess the likely effects of the reform, this study uses a research design that was recently applied by the Research and Reference Services of the German Bundestag (parliament): we estimate the future effects of the reform by analyzing the impact it would have had on the legislation in the 14th and 15th term of the Bundestag if it had already been been in force at that time. In particular we ask: To what extent would the number of laws requiring the consent of the states' chamber, the Bundesrat, have been reduced? Which type of laws would have been affected by this reduction - the more controversial ones, or the less controversial ones? Which policy sectors would have seen the greatest reduction? How much would the reduction have increased the government's capacity to act effectively? Would the legislative process have been accelerated? -- Die verabschiedete Föderalismusreform soll die Gesetzgebung in Deutschland schneller, effizienter und besser machen. Inwiefern sind diese Erwartungen berechtigt? Zur Abschätzung der Reformfolgen auf die Bundesgesetzgebung folgen wir in dem vorliegenden Working Paper einer Vorgehensweise, die der Wissenschaftliche Dienst des Bundestages kürzlich in einer Studie angewandt hat: Die Auswirkungen der Föderalismusreform insbesondere auf die Zustimmungspflicht werden anhand der Gesetzgebung der 14. und 15. Legislaturperiode untersucht. Wir fragen insbesondere: Wie stark hätte sich der Anteil der Zustimmungsgesetze verringert, wenn die neuen Zustimmungsregeln schon in diesen beiden Legislaturperioden gegolten hätten? Quantification of Non-linearities in the Consequential Life Cycle Assessment of the Use Phase of Battery Electric Vehicles
No full textThe diffusion of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) is projected to influence the electricity grid operation, potentially offering opportunities for load-shifting policies aimed at higher integration of renewable energy technologies in the electricity system. Moreover, the examined literature emphasizes electricity as a relevant driver of BEVs Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results. To evaluate LCA impacts associated to future BEVs diffusion scenarios in Italy, we adopt the Consequential Life Cycle Assessment (CLCA) methodology. LCA conventionally assumes a proportional relation between environmental impact indicators and the functional unit. However, such relation may not be representative if the electricity system is significantly affected by the large-scale diffusion of BEVs. Our study couples the conventional CLCA methodology with the EnergyPLAN model through three different approaches, which progressively include BEV-specific dynamics, to capture correlations between additional BEVs fleets and the electricity grid operation, that affectthe mix of electricity consumed in the use phase by BEVs, in Italy in 2030. Here we show that if renewables capacity is not additionally installed in response to additional BEVs electricity demand, the marginal Climate change total indicator of BEVs may increase up to ~40%, with respect to a business-as-usual scenario. Moreover, we quantitatively support the literature indications on how to properly estimate BEVs LCA impacts. Indeed, we weight electricity LCA impacts on hourly BEV charge profiles, finding that this approach best captures BEVs interdependence with the electricity system. At low BEVs diffusion, this approach clearly shows the potential BEVs capability to increase exploitation of renewable energy, whereas at high BEVs diffusion, it fully highlights potential responses of fossil fuel power plants to additional electricity demand. Due to these dynamics, we find that linearly scaling the business-as-usual scenario results would lead to an underestimation of 12.45 Mton CO2-eq of the total impacts of an additional BEVs fleet, under a 100% BEV diffusion scenario. Our methodology could be replicated with different energy system models, or at various geographical scales. Our framework could be coupled with comprehensive assessments of transport systems, to further provide robustness to policymakers by including non-linearities in the mix of electricity consumed during the use phase of BEVs

Jako klucz do interpretacji i zrozumienia ofiary Weil, autorka analizuje myśl Emmanuela Levinasa oraz Józefa Tischnera.The author interprets the sacrifice that Simone Weil filed with itself. The main point of the present article is the assumption that the sacrifice Simone Weil was the most important idea of her life. A thought about the victim is portraying the article in the life and letters of the intellectual, as well as is portraying analogies which are shedding new light on the Weil victim. Simone de Beauvoir en España: sus obras traducidas y su recepción en la prensa
No full textIn the times of the restrictive socio political and cultural Franco context, our author’s presence went progressively growing as the prohibitions were loosed, becoming a plain and visible presence during the Transition times if we take into account her reception in the Spanish edition world and in the Press. Considering, on one hand, first the high number of her works (re) editions as well as, afterward, the new Second Sex translation into Spanish (1999, 2005) and, on the other hand, the good and very good valuation (obviously unequal according to the ideology) of the Press, our author is now a classic in our country. It is true that in some Humanities fields her consecration is irrefutable since she is of compulsory mention, nevertheless in the Literary Studies she hasn’t benefited of the same chance. Still enduring the accusations of misoginy and those of defending masculine values –some long time accusations since they go back to the publication of the Second Sex in France, and after taken on the behalf of the postmodern French feminism–, new times in the reception of Simone de Beauvoir can be predicted since Julia Kristeva claims for the (Re) discovering of Simone de Beauvoir...En los tiempos del contexto socio político y cultural tan restrictivo, la presencia de Simone de Beauvoir fue gradualmente incrementándose a medida que el régimen totalitario relajó las prohibiciones, para llegar a ser total a partir de la Transición a tenor de su acogida en el mundo editorial y periodístico. Pues, por un lado, primero por el ingente número de ediciones y reediciones de sus obras, así como, posteriormente, por la nueva traducción al castellano del Segundo Sexo en Cátedra (1999, 2005) y, por otro lado, por su valoración –eso sí, desigual en función de la ideología– de la prensa, nuestra autora es ya un clásico en nuestro Estado. Si bien es cierto que en determinados ámbitos del saber su consagración es irrefutable, en los Estudios Literarios, sin embargo, no ha tenido la misma suerte por pesarle todavía una desconsideración motivada por las acusaciones de misoginia y de ensalzamiento de los valores masculinos, desconsideraciones surgidas ya con la publicación del Segundo Sexo y retomadas posteriormente por cuenta del feminismo postmoderno francés. Ahora bien se auguran nuevos aires en la recepción de nuestra autora en este ámbito de estudio ya que la misma Julia Kristeva apunta a un (Re)descubrimiento de Simone de Beauvoir..
