Towards a New Integrated Spatial Decision Support System in Urban Context
AbstractThe current growth of urbanization rate indicates that this trend is not going to stop, and therefore, it stresses the necessity of actions for mitigating the local and global pollution. Moreover, most of the actual stock is characterized by low energy performances since it pre-dates the energy regulation. The paper aims at addressing this issue by proposing the integration of Building Simulation (BS) approach, Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA)methods and Geographic Information System (GIS)tool for developing a newMulti-Criteria Spatial Decision Support System (MC-SDSS)in urban context. The BS of relevant building archetypesallows to identify different resolutions of energy data: hour-by-hour data can be useful for demand-side management or renewable integration while aggregated data can be used for load forecasting and retrofit simulations. TheMCApermitschoosing between different building renovation alternatives by considering both qualitative and quantitative criteria. Moreover, the GIS support the method by creating geo-referenced databases. The methodpurposes in giving a comprehensive view to address the complexity of urban building energy planning; due to its flexibility, it can be applied to several urban areas. Three main phases characterize the study: i. overview of relevant existing techniques; ii. description of the integrated proposed method; iii. discussion and future application. The method can provide relevant feedbacks for ranking complex design energy options
Energy Consumption and Thermal Comfort Assessment in Retail Stores: Monitoring and Dynamic Simulation Applied to a Case Study in Turin
Maintaining suitable microclimate internal conditions in retails store is of great importance, because thermal comfort needs to be satisfied for both customers and employees. In the present work, energy consumptions and microclimate quality assessment of a retail store are shown. Buildings dynamic simulation tool, and energy and environmental monitoring were both used for the building climate quality and energy efficiency investigation. The paper shows how monitoring data, combined with dynamic simulation, allow to improve the correct system control increasing energy efficiency, and enhancing moreover the indoor thermal comfort in retail

Safety in forest fire fighting action: a new radiometric model to evaluate the safety distance for firemen working with hand-operated systems
Fire event management always needs human intervention in order to extinguish forest fires. Firemen equipment reached high performance and safety standards but high temperatures occurring in proximity of a forest fire may cause bodily temperature increase and dehydration. Therefore it is important to identify a distance limit at which an operator can work without problems and complications due to the heat during forest fire fighting actions. This work describes an new approach to find a safety limit for firemen. The distance limit at which the operators can work without any consequence is evaluated considering the bodily temperature increase of a man exposed for a period of time at the thermal radiations coming from the fire. The main characteristic of the model is the use of radiometry to evaluate the amount of thermal energy transferred. By varying the distance between the fire and the operator it is possible to evaluate the bodily temperature increase. Safety distance limit is identified when human body temperature starts to be dangerous (38.5 °C). In order to evaluate the distance safety value a fire model and an operator model are given. The fire model is based on the international Brown and Davis forest fire classification in order to consider some various realistic forest fire types. The fire fighter representation is established according to physiological and medical data in order to have a good representation of a real fireman. The results of the model have been compared with the ones coming from other models used for the same purpose based on probabilistic methods and the comparison confirms the good validity of the presented model. This fact, together with the simplicity of the model structure and the practicality of the safety distance as a reference limits allows the model to be used in future applications in order to identify and prevent some possible dangerous situations for operator engaged in forest fire fightin
