Towards a global theology: Theological method and contextualisation
How should the cultural context influence theological formulation? This article examines contextualisation as it relates to theological method. After considering definitions and methods for formulating contextual theology, it applies the method in two areas: the missional activity of communicating the gospel in a particular cultural context, and the ecclesial activity of improving upon the theological confession of the local church. The author concludes by briefly considering the method with a global perspective.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: Some traditions have failed to contextualise the biblical message, whereas other ministry practice has radically altered its message in an attempt to be contextually sensitive. Recent research has resulted in a confusing array of conflicting methods with drastically different practical applications. This article explores how theological method largely determines contextualisation, and it offers a method that is both faithful to the biblical text and sensitive to the contextual situation</p
Tipping your toe in the 'Emerging Technologies' pond from an educational point of view
This paper is about an explorative research into the use of emerging technologies in higher engineering education. New technologies are poised to better prepare students for the labour market and therefore help to endow vital innovative and creative skills. It is not yet fully clear what these skills are, but technological innovations are a good indicator of what to expect. Emerging technologies are technologies not yet widely adopted like there are 3D printing, Virtual Reality and Internet of Things. The diversity and the complexity of these technologies require a better understanding to decide about the value of such technologies for education. The research aims at the development of an approach that will help teachers to investigate, test, and assess the usability of such a technology in their micro-environment of teaching and learning. This explorative research comprises an examination of the current use and experiences in education and the industry, an indebt analysis of some of the technologies and some small-scale experiments concerning the use of such technologies in daily educational practice. The paper summarizes the research results 1 Corresponding Author P. de Vries, [email protected] 45 th SEFI Conference, 18-21 September 2017, Azores, Portugal 2 so far. Voorspelling: De prijzen blijven stijgen
The double cnoidal wave of the Korteweg–de Vries equation: An overview
Earlier work of the author on the spatially periodic solutions of the Korteweg–de Vries equation is here extended via an in‐depth treatment of a special case. The double cnoidal wave is the simplest generalization of the ordinary cnoidal wave discovered by Korteweg and de Vries in 1895. In the limit of small amplitude, the double cnoidal wave is the sum of two noninteracting linear sine waves. In the oppositie limit of large amplitude, it is the sum of solitary waves of two different heights repeated periodically over all space. Although special, the double cnoidal wave is important because it is but the particular case N=2 of a broad family of solutions known variously as ‘‘N‐polycnoidal waves,’’ ‘‘finite gap,’’ ‘‘finite zone’’ solutions, ‘‘waves on a circle,’’ or ‘‘N‐phase wave trains.’’ It has been shown by others that the set of N‐polycnoidal waves gives the general initial value solution to the Korteweg–de Vries equation. This present work is the core of a three‐part treatment of the double cnoidal wave. This part, the overview, presents graphic examples in all the important parameter regimes, explains how collision phase shifts alter the average speed of the two wave phases from the ‘‘free’’ velocities of the two solitary waves, describes the different branches or modes of the double cnoidal wave (it is possible to have many solitary waves on each spatial period provided they are of only two distinct sizes), and contrasts the results of this work with the very limited numerical calculations of previous authors. The second part describes how the problem of numerically calculating the double cnoidal wave can be reduced down to solving four algebraic equations by perturbation theory. The third part explains how the so‐called ‘‘modular transformation’’ of the Riemann theta functions is important in interpreting N‐polycnoidal waves.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70734/2/JMAPAQ-25-12-3390-1.pd
The Greater Awyu Languages of West Papua/ Lourens de Vries.
In English.Includes bibliographical references and index. This book is a comprehensive and authoritative description of the Greater Awyu family of Papuan languages. The book brings together many decades of research on Greater Awyu languages, including 10 years of field work by the author. The book presents a description of major patterns found in languages of the family: phonology, morphology, syntax and discourse. In addition, major aspects of the anthropological linguistics of Greater Awyu languages are described: counting systems, language names, kinship, linguistic ideologies, lexical substitution registers, avoidance and taboo. The linguistic patterns of Greater Awyu languages are systematically placed in the genetic, typological, areal and historical contexts of New Guinea. The long dialect continuums within the family, by reflecting different diachronic stages, offer a window on the origin of switch reference, clause chaining, topic markers, postpositions and double-headed relative clauses. The book is relevant for readers interested in the typological, historical and cultural linguistics of New Guinea but also for anthropologists and historians because the history and cultural practices of Greater Awyu speakers are a key part of the story of this language family.Frontmatter -- Contents -- Abbreviations -- Chapter 1 Introduction -- Chapter 2 Phonology -- Chapter 3 Morphology -- Chapter 4 Syntax -- Chapter 5 Discourse -- Chapter 6 Language in Greater Awyu society -- Chapter 7 Greater Awyu languages in context -- References -- 9 Appendix: Texts -- Index1 online resource (X, 253 p.)
